At least 93,000 people have been directly affected by the massive landslide in the Himalayas and are in urgent need of aid, according to the Red Cross. The situation remains dangerous because lakes formed by the landslide could trigger further flooding, and relief convoys have already been temporarily blocked. Six health facilities were also damaged, and eight healthcare workers are still missing.

The Trump administration is negotiating with Caracas for long-term access to as many as 17 Venezuelan oil fields that would be developed by U.S. companies. The oil produced there would be earmarked primarily for the United States. One option reportedly being discussed is a leasing model that would allow individual fields to be awarded to U.S. producers. According to Reuters, the talks are taking place at the highest levels and could lead to an agreement soon. The proposed arrangement, however, could run into problems with Venezuela’s constitution and existing oil laws.

Chinese manufacturers are pushing low-cost, partly 3D-printed interceptor drones onto the global market. Instead of jamming enemy drones, these systems are designed to slam directly into them at high speed. Some can fly well over 300 kilometers per hour, cost roughly $1,500 to $2,900, and, according to individual manufacturers, are already being sold in large numbers to countries including Russia and several in the Middle East. The boom is being driven by the wars in Ukraine and Iran, while China is now expanding its already dominant position in drones and drone components into counter-drone technology.

U.S. forces in Europe are reportedly running extremely low on advanced Patriot interceptor missiles, largely because many systems and missiles were moved to the Middle East for the Iran war, according to a U.S. defense official and a NATO official. In the event of a Russian ballistic missile attack, Europe’s ability to defend itself could be severely limited, although the Pentagon and a NATO spokesperson reject claims that there is an acute shortage. Earlier transfers to Ukraine have also drawn down supplies, but officials involved say the Iran war is the main reason for the current situation.
