01:10 PM For the First Time, the AfD Takes the Top Post in a German Parliament: Tobias Rausch Becomes State Parliament President

The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt has elected AfD Secretary-General Tobias Rausch as its president with 48 votes. The AfD and BSW together hold only 44 seats, meaning at least 4 votes came from other parliamentary groups. Rausch is the first AfD politician ever to lead a German parliament and plans to remain his party’s secretary-general at the same time. AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund is already treating the result as a test for his planned bid to become state premier in December. In his first speech, Rausch promised to serve as president of the entire state parliament. At the same time, the AfD and BSW had previously used their joint majority to force through a seating arrangement that the Greens explicitly opposed.

11:35 AM Former BND Chief August Hanning Arrested - Suspected of Treason and Secret Intelligence Activity

BKA investigators arrested former BND president August Hanning early in the morning at his home near Münster. Federal prosecutors are investigating him on suspicion of treasonous espionage, attempted treason and secret intelligence activity. A former senior BND official is alleged to have supplied Hanning with around 2,000 top-secret documents for money until at least 2022, including sensitive reports on Iran’s nuclear program and the Russian military. Hanning is alleged to have used the material at least once to prepare a security analysis for a foreign intelligence service and to have used internal intelligence in communications with an agent. According to current information, Russia is not involved. The case began to unfold after investigators found sensitive material linked to Hanning during searches connected to the Christina Block case. If the allegations are confirmed, it would amount to a historic intelligence scandal, because never before has a former BND president faced suspicion of treason on this scale.

06:35 AM AM Three Times as Many Objectors: Germany’s New Military Service Pushes Thousands to Refuse

The number of applications for conscientious objection to military service has exploded in Germany: By the end of August, 12,102 applications had already been filed, compared with just 3,879 during all of 2025. Since the end of June alone, the number has more than doubled. The new military service system, with mandatory medical examinations for young men born in 2008 or later, and the tense situation between NATO and Russia are apparently pushing many people to protect themselves early. Conscription remains suspended, but the right to refuse military service on grounds of conscience remains in place. At the same time, the responsible federal agency is warning about numerous incorrectly filed applications that have to be sent back without being processed. Those affected include reservists, active-duty soldiers and people who have never previously served in the military. Counseling centers are already reporting a sharp increase in demand.

06:31 AM Australia’s Conservatives Want to Cut Migration More Sharply Than Ever Before

Australia’s conservative opposition wants to reduce net migration to 100,000 people a year for each of the first 2 years, compared with roughly 3 times that level now. Over 4 years, 650,000 temporary visas would be cut, humanitarian visas would be halved to 10,000 and the number of international students would be capped at 240,000. At the same time, 100,000 additional visas for skilled workers would be introduced and applications from construction workers would be processed more quickly. Opposition leader Angus Taylor says the policy is driven by pressure on housing, schools and infrastructure. The government is also planning cuts, but they would be much smaller and would not be fully implemented until 2028. Pressure from the right is also behind the tougher approach, with the anti-immigration One Nation party polling ahead of the conservative coalition in some recent surveys.

11:40 AM Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor challenges searches and arrest in court

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor wants a court to determine whether the search warrants issued before his arrest in February were lawful. A hearing is scheduled for Thursday. King Charles's brother was arrested on suspicion of passing government documents to Jeffrey Epstein. The alleged disclosure is said to have taken place while he was serving as Britain's special representative for trade between 2001 and 2011. For now, the court will focus on whether the police action against him was lawful.

02:15 AM Bosnia remains politically divided - the left, nationalists, and Moscow-aligned forces are leading

With more than 90 percent of polling stations counted, Bosnia's three-member presidency is once again shaping up to have a clearly divided ethnic leadership. Social Democrat Bosniak Denis Bećirović is leading in the Federation with 26.66 percent, while Croatian nationalist Darijana Filipović is ahead with 14 percent. In Republika Srpska, pro-Russian nationalist Željka Cvijanović has 55.34 percent. Turnout remained low at 42.2 percent, while frustration over the economy, political gridlock, and the slow-moving EU accession talks continues. At the same time, the EU, Russia, and the United States are still competing for influence in the country. The key question will be whether reforms to the judiciary and anti-corruption efforts finally move forward after the election, or whether the mutual political blockades continue.
