Donald Trump has done it again. In a furious Truth Social post on May 29, 2025, the U.S. President declared a "total victory" in his lawsuit against the Pulitzer Prize Board. His claim? That a Florida appellate court had ruled the Pulitzer Prize was "illegal and defamatory" and that the New York Times and Washington Post must return their awards for reporting on the Russia investigation. None of this is true.
The court merely allowed the lawsuit to proceed - nothing more. It issued no ruling on the content of the reporting, no decision to strip any prizes, no apology from the media. It was a procedural step, allowing Trump to continue the lawsuit he initiated. Yet the president spins it as a victory over the “fake news media” and as proof of a scandal that never existed.
In reality, two independent reviews had already confirmed the legitimacy of the Pulitzer awards. The reporting on Russian election interference in 2016 was found to be thoroughly documented, with no disqualifying errors. In fact, parts of the coverage were supported by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings. But facts don’t matter in Trump’s alternate reality.
Trump’s claim that the reporting was a “hoax,” now supposedly admitted by the media themselves, is simply false. Neither the Times nor the Post have retracted their stories. And no court has ever ruled against them. Trump’s narrative is pure propaganda - a direct attack on journalism, the courts, and truth itself.
With statements like these, the president continues to erode the foundations of democracy. He casts doubt on press freedom, undermines confidence in the judiciary, and promotes a climate in which lies are packaged as truth - and truth is labeled betrayal.
The United States is witnessing a moment where facts no longer lead - volume does. And no one yells louder than Donald Trump.
