Ashley Hinson of Iowa and Mike Rogers of Michigan are calling for a swift end to the Iran war after previously supporting Trump’s military actions. Hinson voted 6 times in the House against efforts to limit Trump’s war powers, most recently just last week. Now both Senate candidates want to suspend gas taxes and temporarily halt U.S. diesel exports to give consumers some relief from rising fuel prices. Their Democratic opponents accuse them of changing their tune only because of election pressure. A poll released Monday puts Trump’s approval rating at 32%, as the economic fallout from the nearly 7-month-long war increasingly dominates the political debate.

The U.S. plans to reopen a former military base in Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland and establish another in Mestersvig on the east coast, according to 3 people familiar with the plans. Mestersvig is currently used by Denmark’s Sirius Dog Sled Patrol. Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. are expected to sign the agreement Tuesday on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York. Denmark says Arctic security should remain under NATO’s umbrella. The details of the agreement have not yet been made public and are not expected to be finalized until it is signed.

07:35 AM Trump Prepares Sanctions Against the Entire International Criminal Court

The Trump administration has prepared sanctions against the entire International Criminal Court in The Hague, according to 2 people familiar with the plans. Until now, Washington had imposed punitive measures on individual judges and prosecutors. Now the court's work as a whole could be affected: Banks could block payments, and obtaining technical services and insurance could become more difficult. The United States is demanding, among other things, that the court drop its arrest warrants against Israeli leaders. It remains unclear when the sanctions will be announced. The State Department initially did not respond to the reports.

Following renewed Houthi missile and drone attacks on Saudi Arabia's capital, Riyadh, the conflict between Iran and the United States is escalating. Donald Trump threatened Iran's leadership with economic collapse or annihilation if it failed to reach a deal, while also saying he was open to meeting with President Masoud Pezeshkian. Iran's military announced that it would respond to further attacks with sustained retaliatory strikes against US bases and American interests. With the Strait of Hormuz largely blockaded and the Houthis making military gains around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the Gulf region's energy exports are now almost entirely cut off from global markets. There is still no sign of a return to the ceasefire that collapsed in July.

09:22 PM AfD in the Lead, CDU at 5.0 Percent: Merz Calls It a “Disaster”

The AfD is leading the state election in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 37.9 percent, according to projections from 7:57 p.m., followed by the SPD at 35.7 percent. Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s CDU is polling at just 5.0 percent and is in danger of missing out on a seat in the state parliament. Merz called the result a “disaster” but said he would stay in office and press ahead with his reforms. State Premier Manuela Schwesig had campaigned against both the AfD and the federal government’s reform policies under Merz. In Berlin, projections from 8:18 p.m. put the Left Party ahead with 25.3 percent, followed by the CDU at 19.1 percent; the AfD has 16.2 percent. Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil called for the federal government to change course in light of voters’ concerns about pension reform. Rising living and housing costs dominated the campaigns in both states, while Merz is sticking to his reform agenda.

08:50 AM North Korea Fires Apparent Ballistic Missile Into the Sea

North Korea apparently launched a ballistic missile on Sunday toward the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, according to Japan’s Defense Ministry. South Korea’s Defense Ministry confirmed the launch of an initially unidentified projectile. According to Japanese authorities, it landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. Just a day earlier, Pyongyang had rejected a resolution by the international nuclear watchdog against its nuclear program. Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, blamed US-led military exercises with South Korea and Japan for the growing tensions and announced that North Korea would continue expanding its nuclear arsenal.

01:50 AM Fascism and Freedom of the Press: Trump Kicks 3 News Outlets Out of the White House

Trump is making good on his threat: CNN, MS NOW, and Politico were denied access to the White House on Saturday, and their press passes were confiscated. The president claims the outlets are spreading fake news and is already threatening to do the same to other news organizations. The targeted outlets call the ban an unconstitutional attack on freedom of the press and are considering legal action. The New York Times and The Washington Post have also condemned the ban as an attempt to intimidate journalists who report critically on the administration. The deliberate suppression of independent journalism is one of the historical tactics of fascism. During his first term, Trump already tried to strip journalists he didn't like of their White House press credentials, only to be stopped by federal courts.
