06:30 AM Republican Since 1970, Now Colorado Springs Falls: Trump's Iran War Costs His Party One of Its Safest Strongholds
For 56 years, Colorado Springs sent nothing but Republicans to the House of Representatives. Now former Army paratrooper Jessica Killin has become the first Democrat ever to win the district, defeating Republican incumbent Jeff Crank. And of all places, it was in a city with 5 military installations, where service members and their families make up roughly a third of the population, that Trump's Iran war became a political disaster for his party. A soldier stationed at Fort Carson was among the first Americans killed in the war. Former Special Forces officer and Republican Party official Karl Schneider backed Killin and called Trump a clear and present danger to America and the world. Even Republican voters turned away from Crank because he failed to address rising gas and grocery prices and tied himself unconditionally to Trump. Killin also took aim at his tariff policies and the Epstein scandal, demanding that Congress reclaim its constitutional authority over decisions to go to war. In El Paso County, 53 percent of voters are now unaffiliated with either party, while the once-conservative military town has grown younger and more diverse. With $5.6 million in campaign contributions and more than 400 volunteers, Killin knocked on over 100,000 doors. Colorado Springs, a dependable home of Republican power for decades, has given Trump and his party an answer that no amount of military chest-thumping can drown out.

05:55 PM After Trump’s Election Defeat, the AI Industry Faces a Reckoning: Democrats Prepare a Wave of Legislation
When Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress in January, they plan to rein in the largely unregulated AI industry with a whole series of new laws. The proposals include independent safety testing of powerful AI systems and clear liability rules when those systems cause harm to people. Massive data centers are also coming under scrutiny because their enormous electricity consumption can drive up energy prices for American households. Incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has made protecting consumers one of his priorities. Representative Lori Trahan is pushing for mandatory safety standards, while newly elected Senator Abdul El-Sayed wants to establish an independent agency to regulate AI. Greg Casar wants technology industry executives brought before Congress to testify under oath. Back in October, Democrats demanded information from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other companies about security problems and their AI systems taking actions their developers never intended. Trump continues to oppose mandatory regulations, but Democrats will have the power to launch investigations and compel companies to testify. The prospect has already triggered massive losses on the stock market. The question of who is responsible when artificial intelligence causes harm could now, for the first time, lead to serious legal consequences.
03:15 AM Zelenskyy Warns of a Dramatic Air Defense Situation: Ukraine Lacks Patriot Missiles and $16 Billion in U.S. Aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling for a rapid realignment of relations with Washington following the shift in power in the American Congress. Ukraine must use the new political situation to expand support from both parties, he says. Particularly urgent is the supply of Patriot air defense missiles, without which Ukraine can barely defend itself against the continuing Russian air attacks. Although the United States recently approved the sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 missiles worth $2.1 billion, their delivery is not expected until the early 2030s. At the same time, Zelenskyy is demanding the payment of $16 billion in American aid that had already been promised but has not yet been provided. A sufficient number of F-16 fighter jets must also be kept operational for the next 5 to 6 months. The situation is particularly critical in Kyiv, where Russian attacks on the energy supply threaten the country as it faces another winter of war. While talks between the United States, Russia, and Ukraine are scheduled to resume in Abu Dhabi next week, Western officials are discussing future security guarantees in Brussels.

07:12 PM Google Offers Buyouts to Employees in Germany: Billions for AI, Less Money for Workers
Google has expanded its voluntary severance program to Germany and 4 other countries. Since June 2026, selected employees in France, Canada, Japan, and Switzerland have also been able to leave the company in exchange for a severance package. The move comes amid massive investments in artificial intelligence, with the rising costs increasingly worrying investors. The selection of affected business units is particularly revealing: Google Cloud and the AI division DeepMind appear to be largely spared. In Switzerland, where Google employs around 5,000 people, departing employees received 1 month's salary for every year of service, up to a maximum of 12 months' pay. On one team of roughly 50 employees, at least 4 accepted the offer. How many employees worldwide have already agreed to leave remains unknown. Google had previously introduced similar programs in the U.S. and the U.K., and in at least 1 business unit, regular layoffs followed. While the tech giant pours billions into its AI future, the people who have been working for it are increasingly becoming a cost issue.
06:20 AM After Trump's Election Disaster, Republicans Are Sweating Over Their Supreme Court Majority
Losing their Senate majority has put Donald Trump and the conservative justices on the U.S. Supreme Court in a tough spot. Starting January 3, 2027, Democrats will be able to block new federal judicial appointments, including any replacements Trump might try to push through for Clarence Thomas (78) and Samuel Alito (76). Both are part of the Court's staunchly conservative wing, which currently holds a 6-3 majority. Republicans could theoretically still get a replacement confirmed before January, but one of the justices would have to step down on very short notice. Neither has announced any plans to retire. Republican Governor Ron DeSantis sees virtually no chance of confirming suitable replacements during the remainder of Trump's presidency. Some conservative legal experts even fear Republicans might not regain control of the Senate until 2033. By then, Thomas would be 84 and Alito 82. The nerves on the right are already showing in some bitter remarks: Conservative legal scholar Ilya Shapiro hopes Thomas and Alito have already fired up their treadmills, while Josh Hammer is wishing them exceptionally good health insurance.

01:10 PM BMW Cuts 8,000 Jobs as Profits Plunge: German Automaker Slashes Its Annual Forecast for the Second Time
BMW is deep in crisis and has once again dramatically lowered its profit expectations for 2026. Its operating profit margin in the automotive business is now expected to come in between minus 0.5% and plus 0.5%, a far cry from its long-term target of 8% to 10%. Back in July, the Munich-based automaker launched a plan to cut 8,000 jobs in Germany, and now management positions are set to be eliminated even faster. The downturn in China has hit particularly hard, with BMW selling 22% fewer vehicles there during the first 9 months of the year. On top of that, the company is dealing with U.S. tariffs and high restructuring costs. In the third quarter, its operating margin fell from 5.2% to 3.4%, while pretax earnings came in at €2.1 billion. Despite the bleak outlook, BMW shares rose 2.3% as investors bet on the cost-cutting measures and new electric vehicles like the iX3.
