Shots Near the White House - Suspect Killed, Third Armed Incident in One Month and New Questions About Security in Washington

Washington D.C. - Saturday evening in Washington had originally been expected to unfold differently. Donald Trump had initially planned to spend the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The trip was canceled at short notice. Instead, Trump remained in Washington and, according to information from the White House, continued discussions related to the ongoing negotiations surrounding Iran. Vice President JD Vance and additional members of the cabinet had also been called to the White House. While conversations about war, ceasefires, and diplomatic possibilities were taking place inside the Oval Office, gunshots suddenly rang out only a short distance away.

Shortly after 6 p.m. local time, according to the Secret Service, a person approached a security checkpoint at the intersection of 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The area is located directly next to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building and essentially inside the immediate security perimeter of the White House. According to preliminary investigations, the man allegedly pulled a weapon from his bag and immediately opened fire on the officers stationed there.

Security personnel then returned fire. The suspect was struck and transported to a hospital, where he later died. He was later identified as 21 year old Nasire Best. According to an investigator, the man had already been known to authorities and had reportedly been considered a psychologically troubled individual. Officials initially provided no information regarding a possible motive.

In addition to the attacker, an uninvolved person was also struck. This particular point initially created additional uncertainty. Investigators could not immediately determine whether the individual had been injured by the attacker's initial gunfire or by rounds fired during the exchange of shots. Information regarding that person's condition was not initially released.

Donald Trump himself was not injured. The Secret Service stated that the president had not been affected by the incident. There were also no injuries among security personnel. On the grounds themselves, however, the situation turned into an emergency within just seconds.

Journalists who were on site reported hearing multiple shots fired in rapid succession. Reporters were instructed to immediately seek cover and move into the press briefing room. ABC correspondent Selina Wang later released a video that allegedly showed the moment immediately before the exchange of gunfire. She had just been recording a social media video and was speaking about Trump's comments on the Iran negotiations. Then gunshots suddenly became audible. Her eyes visibly widened, and seconds later she ducked for cover.

Images from Washington later showed an unusual scene even for the American capital. Large security gates remained closed. National Guard members stood at access points for staff and visitors. Emergency personnel secured roads surrounding the complex. Yellow police tape stretched across sidewalks and streets. Investigators placed numerous orange evidence markers on the ground. Images showed gloves from emergency responders, medical materials, and traces of the initial treatment effort.

In addition to the Secret Service, several other agencies responded. The FBI, National Guard personnel, and Washington police units participated in securing the area. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the FBI was supporting the operation and that further information would be released as it became available. The incident carries additional significance because it does not stand alone. It was already the third firearms incident in the immediate vicinity of the president within only one month.

At the end of April, an armed incident occurred during the White House Correspondents' Association dinner. Investigators later accused Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California of attempting to kill Trump. He pleaded not guilty and remains in federal custody.

On May 4, another incident followed near the Washington Monument. At the time, a Secret Service agent observed a man along JD Vance's motorcade route who allegedly appeared to be concealing a weapon on his body. The suspect, Michael Marx of Midland, Texas, allegedly fled and later opened fire on officers. Security personnel again returned fire. During that incident, a teenage bystander was injured. The events of 2024 go back even further. In July, Trump was injured in the ear during a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania after a gunman opened fire. One attendee died and two other people were seriously injured. In September, security personnel discovered a man with a prepared sniper position near Trump's golf property in Florida. Months later, that individual was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Each of these incidents involved different backgrounds, different suspects, and different circumstances. The number of incidents involving the president nevertheless stands out. The White House is among the most heavily monitored locations in the world. When gunfire erupts multiple times there within only a few weeks, attention eventually begins shifting beyond a single suspect. Each case has its own background and its own perpetrator. Still, what remains notable is that several armed incidents occurred within immediate proximity of Trump in only a matter of weeks.
