On the Edge of a New War - Trump’s Final Negotiations and Iran’s Warning of the Next Fire

In Washington, talks about peace are taking place while new attacks could simultaneously be in preparation. It is precisely this contradiction that currently defines the situation between the United States and Iran. Behind closed doors, negotiations over a possible end to the war are underway, while military options are once again on the table at the same time. The uncertainty is not created solely by the content of the discussions. It arises primarily because public statements and diplomatic messages continue to move in different directions. According to sources within Iranian negotiating circles, Tehran has submitted a new proposal through mediators intended to serve as the basis for an agreement. The sequence of events plays a decisive role. From Iran’s perspective, an official end to the war would first need to be declared. Only afterward should negotiations over the nuclear program follow. It is precisely on this question that both sides apparently continue to clash. The American side reportedly wants both issues resolved simultaneously, while Tehran insists that military matters must first come to an end.

The Iranian proposal contains several specific conditions. The Strait of Hormuz would be temporarily reopened. However, this would require an end to the American blockade of Iranian ports. Additional demands include the release of billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets as well as financial compensation for damage allegedly caused during the war. Iran is also demanding a regional approach that extends beyond its own territory and includes other conflicts, particularly the situation in Lebanon.

In return, according to reports, Tehran is offering concessions regarding its nuclear program. Uranium with higher enrichment levels would be diluted under supervision. For a period of ten years, enrichment above 3.6 percent would be voluntarily suspended. At the same time, however, Iran is demanding recognition of its right to limited uranium enrichment. This remains one of the central issues dividing both sides.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, continues to maintain a public position that leaves little visible room for flexibility. The White House again stated that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon and must not retain enriched uranium. At the same time, discussions are reportedly taking place in the Oval Office involving Pete Hegseth and senior security officials. According to those reports, Trump is once again considering military action against Iran if no breakthrough occurs in the near future.

Tehran views these shifting signals with considerable suspicion. According to Iranian officials, Trump has shown a willingness to negotiate in messages delivered through mediators while publicly expressing different positions at the same time. From Iran’s perspective, it is not only American policy that complicates negotiations, but also the unpredictability of the American president himself.

Meanwhile, the economic situation surrounding the conflict is also shifting. China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil. Iranian representatives stated that part of the shipments to China had already been organized through advance sales agreements. At the same time, countries in Europe and Asia have reportedly increased their direct contacts with Tehran. The background to all of this is the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important trade routes in the world. The economic consequences of a prolonged conflict would extend far beyond the Middle East.

On May 6, 2026, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing while tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz continued escalating. China pushed for the reopening of the crucial trade route through which roughly one fifth of the world’s oil trade passes. Iran simultaneously made clear that Tehran would not back down from its demands or from its control over Hormuz.

At the same time, both sides are making preparations in case the talks fail. Iranian officials are openly discussing possible retaliatory measures in the event of new attacks. Among the potential targets mentioned are American interests outside West Asia, military bases, and infrastructure in countries hosting American facilities. The Bab al Mandab Strait near Yemen has also been mentioned. It is likewise one of the most important routes for global trade.

This creates a situation in which every new development points in two possible directions. On one side are negotiations aimed at ending the war. On the other side are new threats, new military planning, and growing mutual distrust. The talks are continuing. At the same time, all parties involved apparently appear to be preparing for the possibility that they could fail. That is why a possible agreement may currently be on the table, but between an announcement, especially when it comes from Trump, wire reports, and a durable peace, there is still a long road ahead.
