The European Central Bank is expected to raise its key interest rate to 2.50 percent today after the Iran war pushed oil back above $100 a barrel. That is fueling fresh concern that sharply higher energy prices could send inflation climbing again across the euro zone. At the same time, the euro zone economy has held up better than expected so far, even as consumers and businesses are already feeling higher fuel costs. The decision is due at 2:15 PM, with ECB President Christine Lagarde facing the press 30 minutes later.

12:35 PM NATO foils Russian sabotage attempt against undersea cables in the Arctic

British, Norwegian and U.S. forces stopped Russian special-purpose submarines near Svalbard that, according to Western officials, were training to use a new technology designed to disable critical undersea cables without leaving obvious traces. The covert operation was carried out by Russia’s GUGI deep-sea warfare directorate and was cut short after NATO forces tracked and confronted the Russian vessels at sea. No cables were damaged, but Western intelligence officials see the exercise as preparation for a possible conflict with NATO in which internet and financial links could be deliberately knocked out. Russia denies sabotage allegations, while NATO countries are stepping up surveillance of critical infrastructure in the North Atlantic and the Baltic Sea.

The U.S. government wants to support pro-Trump organizations in Europe with grants of up to $3 million, but is apparently excluding applicants from France. Washington fears that funding MAGA-aligned groups could be seen as foreign interference ahead of France’s 2027 presidential election. France had already issued a clear warning against attempts at foreign interference and is currently tightening its laws against disinformation and election interference. Particularly explosive: The Trump administration openly supports right-wing and far-right forces in Europe, but apparently wants to draw a line in France because of the political and economic consequences.

The U.S. Treasury Department plans to buy back up to $6 billion in long-term government bonds on September 10. The amount is three times larger than its last buyback of longer-dated securities. The move is aimed at supporting liquidity in the bond market after yields on 30-year U.S. Treasurys recently climbed to their highest level since 2007. Yields rose again after the announcement, with the 10-year yield reaching 4.8528 percent, its highest level since November 2023

Pakistan has urged Iran to use its influence over the Houthis to stop further attacks on Saudi Arabia. After strikes on an air base and oil facilities, Saudi Arabia responded with 54 airstrikes in Yemen. Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are coordinating their defense more closely and warning that an attack on one of the three countries could affect all of them. Iran says it does not control the Houthis, while Iranian sources also say Tehran urged the group to launch new attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Brent crude has climbed above $100 a barrel for the first time since late July after Iran and the United States sharply stepped up their attacks on tankers. Iran reported attacks on ten ships near the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States sank five Iranian oil tankers. Less than two million barrels of oil a day are now moving through the strait - before the latest escalation, it was still eight to nine million. Gasoline and diesel also remain extremely expensive: In the United States, gasoline is averaging $4.22 a gallon, while diesel is approaching $6.

Donald Trump has blamed the AfD's election victory in Saxony-Anhalt on what he called Germany's "absolutely horrible" immigration rules. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius pointed out that Friedrich Merz generally rejects interference or comments from abroad on German elections. The pause could still drag on for months - while Trump continues tightening restrictions not only on illegal immigration, but on legal immigration as well.
