The Vice President Sells the Deal to Himself - and Iran Gets the Oil

byTEAM KAIZEN BLOG

19. June 2026

In Washington, Vice President JD Vance defended the Iran agreement with three claims contradicted by the text of the agreement and by his own intelligence agencies. Iran’s nuclear program has not been destroyed, and Tehran made no meaningful commitments to limit it.

They sent the vice president to praise an agreement that many read as a series of American concessions. On Thursday afternoon, JD Vance stepped to the podium in Washington and defended the newly signed memorandum with Iran. He did so with three claims contradicted by the text of the agreement, by reporting, by reading the document itself, and by his own intelligence agencies, and he did it in a way that at times made even his own words seem reluctant to cooperate.

The first. The nuclear weapons program had been destroyed, Vance said, it was gone, and if the Iranians decided tomorrow to build a bomb, they simply no longer had the capability to do so.

The goal, he said, was to make sure they did not rebuild that capability, not in one year or two, but for many, many years to come. That is what it sounds like when words are expected to do the work the bombs did not. Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have repeatedly declared total destruction, yet American intelligence assessments speak of limited damage during the war, and the amount of time Iran would need to reach a bomb has not changed since last summer. Tehran, for its part, has consistently stated that its program does not seek a weapon. Destroyed therefore describes nothing that actually happened.

The second and third claims followed in the same breath. Iran, Vance said, had committed itself to destroying its stockpile of enriched uranium and ending enrichment. Neither appears anywhere in the signed memorandum. At no point in its entire nuclear history has Iran promised not to enrich uranium.

The media did not let go. Under this agreement, Iran is now allowed to sell oil freely, that creates an immediate financial benefit, and it receives that benefit without making new, concrete nuclear commitments. How that was not one sided was something reporters very much wanted to know. They made very concrete commitments, Vance replied, they committed to destroying their stockpile of highly enriched material.

Question: “Iran is allowed to sell oil without making concrete nuclear commitments. Why is that not one sided?”
JD Vance: “They made very concrete nuclear commitments. They committed to destroying their stockpile of highly enriched material.”

That is simply not what the agreement says. The final text speaks of a minimum standard under which the stockpile would gradually be diluted over time. That is not the same as destroying it. Everything else concerning uranium remains vague because both sides agreed to revisit the question at the end of a sixty day negotiation period. Dilution is not destruction, and later is not a commitment.

So the vice president stepped forward to present a thin deal as a major one, and even he could not make the preferred narrative stand on its own. The next sixty days are supposed to show what he is actually able to negotiate. For now, it does not look promising. It remains the oldest habit of power that a claim, repeated often enough, begins to present itself as fact. A program declared gone while one’s own intelligence services still describe it as intact does not become destroyed simply because someone calls it that. Between what Vance said and what is written lies the entire distance between an agreement and the way it is sold.
