It is an incredible image. The prime minister of Qatar, a country Trump called a financier of terrorism in 2017, now sits in Switzerland beside the vice president of the United States, JD Vance, helping shape the Middle East policy of the very administration that once declared him an enemy. Between the accusation and the seat at that table lie two gifts. Qatar later gave Trump a luxury jet worth four hundred million dollars and allowed the Trump Organization to develop luxury real estate on its soil. That is how a financier of terror became a benefactor, and an accusation became a business arrangement. The price of transformation can be calculated.
The man’s name is Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, prime minister and foreign minister since 2023, mediator for Gaza and Iran, for Afghanistan and the diplomacy of the region. Now he no longer mediates only between powers, he helps write the policy of the most powerful. And the ground on which the negotiations take place belongs to a Qatari sovereign wealth fund. Even the room has been bought.
An accusation is a word, a jet is a thing, and in this administration the thing wins. Whoever provides the airplane is forgiven the suspicion, and whoever is forgiven the suspicion is handed the map of the Middle East. The word terrorism lasted exactly until the aircraft stood on the runway. What remains is the lesson that in this moment those who govern do not follow conviction, they follow the calculation, and that a country can afford the foreign policy of a world power if it gives gifts expensive enough.
