Trump Calls Republicans to the First Midterm Convention

Donald Trump is taking personal control of the congressional campaign. On Tuesday, he announced that the Republican Party will hold its first-ever national convention before the midterm elections on September 9 and 10 in Dallas. Until now, gatherings of this scale had been reserved for presidential election years. Trump hopes the event will energize his supporters and prevent Republicans from losing their narrow majorities in the House of Representatives or the Senate this November. Without Trump himself on the ballot, concern has grown within the party that many Republican voters could simply stay home. Trump has promoted the idea for months. He said the convention would showcase what Republicans have accomplished since the 2024 presidential election. At the same time, he promised a rally with entertainment unlike anything seen before. Democrats, however, view the event differently. They intend to use it to tie every Republican congressional candidate even more closely to Trump, whose approval ratings have fallen underwater.
The choice of Dallas is no coincidence. One of the country's most closely watched Senate races will be decided there. Democrat James Talarico faces Republican Ken Paxton. Backed by Trump, Paxton defeated longtime Senator John Cornyn in this year's Republican primary. At the same time, he carries a long history of political scandals. Even senior Republicans now fear that his record could put what should have been a safe Senate seat at risk.
Russia Closes More Rail Border Crossings to the European Union

Russia has temporarily closed several rail border crossings with Finland, Estonia, and Latvia effective July 1. The decision was announced in a government decree published on Tuesday. Five crossings along the Finnish border are affected, along with one crossing each into Estonia and Latvia. The closures apply to passengers, freight, and rail traffic alike. Moscow has not specified how long the restrictions will remain in place, nor has it offered any explanation for the move.
Russia's Foreign Ministry has been instructed to formally notify Finland, Estonia, and Latvia of the decision. For the past two years, Finland's border has already remained largely closed by decision of the Finnish government. Rail traffic had continued only along the Estonian and Latvian borders. According to Russia's border infrastructure agency, however, not every crossing is being shut down. The Sebezh rail border crossing with Latvia will remain open. The measure fits into a broader development in which Russia continues to reduce its connections with the European Union step by step. Without a time limit and without a public explanation, the government is creating new uncertainty for cross-border transportation. Where railway lines once connected countries, more and more barriers are now taking their place.
TTrump Received More Than $120,000 Worth of Tickets to Major Sporting Events

Donald Trump received tickets to some of the most exclusive sporting events in the United States last year. The gifts are listed in his newly released financial disclosure and carry a declared value of more than $120,000. They came from close allies, sports executives, and companies directly connected to the events. Among the donors were Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White, FIFA, National Football League team owners, the Professional Golfers' Association, and the watchmaker Rolex.
Trump alone received ten tickets to the Super Bowl valued at $50,000. Another ten tickets to the FIFA Club World Cup Final came from FIFA President Gianni Infantino and were listed at $15,000. Trump later presented the championship trophy to Chelsea after the final. Additional tickets covered the Ryder Cup, the NBA Finals, and several other major sporting events. The least expensive gift consisted of five tickets to the NCAA Wrestling Championships, valued at $1,300. Compared with the billions generated through cryptocurrency ventures and other business interests, the tickets appear to be little more than a footnote. Even so, they illustrate how closely politics, money, and major sporting events have become intertwined. The White House rejects any suggestion of a conflict of interest, insisting that Trump acts solely in the interests of the American public.
North Korea Lures Buyers to an Auto Show While Secretly Investigating Their Wealth

What appears to be an ordinary auto show in Pyongyang is reportedly serving a second purpose. According to information from inside North Korea, the Ministry of Social Security was ordered to secretly investigate wealthy visitors attending the exhibition. Officers have reportedly been instructed to determine who prospective buyers are and where the money for their expensive vehicles comes from. According to a source, the directive was issued in mid-June. The exhibition took place from June 19 through June 28 in Pyongyang's Hwasong District. Among the vehicles on display were the Chinese Zeekr 7X electric SUV and imported used luxury cars. Orders were accepted on site, while official sales are expected to begin in July. The event is organized by two state-owned trading companies, including one controlled by North Korea's intelligence service, which raises foreign currency for the regime through commercial activities.
While visitors inspect the vehicles, security officers quietly investigate their financial backgrounds. According to the source, even some of the officers assigned to the event have grown resentful. Some complain that they have been reduced to serving as doormen for a government money-making operation. Others reportedly hope to profit through bribes from buyers eager to avoid uncomfortable questions about the origins of their wealth. Particular attention is focused on the so-called Donju, North Korea's growing class of wealthy traders and entrepreneurs, many of whom accumulated their fortunes outside the state-controlled economy. Many fear that purchasing a luxury vehicle could expose financial dealings they would rather keep hidden. For most North Koreans, however, the exhibition remains entirely out of reach. Vehicles costing tens of thousands of dollars are available only to the country's privileged elite while much of the population continues struggling to meet basic daily needs.
$2.3 Trillion Gone - Wall Street Begins Doubting AI

America's largest technology companies lost more than $2.3 trillion in market value during June alone. Nvidia, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Tesla were all affected. Their combined market capitalization fell by ten percent during the month and remains below where it started the year. Investors are increasingly questioning whether the enormous sums being poured into artificial intelligence will produce returns quickly enough. As billions continue flowing into new AI data centers, investor enthusiasm has shifted toward the companies supplying the underlying technology. Memory chip manufacturers and semiconductor producers have become the biggest beneficiaries. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed 93 percent during the first half of the year and is on pace for its strongest performance since the technology boom of 1999. Sandisk surged roughly 760 percent. Micron, Intel, Western Digital, and Seagate all more than tripled in value. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company has now surpassed a market capitalization of $2 trillion.
At the same time, the cost of memory chips and electronic components continues to rise sharply. Apple has increased prices for MacBooks and iPads by roughly twenty percent, while Microsoft has also raised prices for Xbox consoles. Despite growing concerns, the largest technology companies continue expanding their AI infrastructure. Analysts estimate that their total spending could soon approach $1 trillion. Wall Street, however, is increasingly asking whether those enormous investments will generate profits quickly enough.
Europe's New Asylum Rules Hit Those Most in Need of Protection

The European Union's new Migration and Asylum Pact significantly tightens asylum procedures across the bloc. In the future, far more asylum claims will be processed directly at the EU's external borders and airports. Those whose claims fail are expected to be rejected or returned much more quickly. Human rights organizations warn that the new system could place the greatest burden on people whose persecution cannot be documented within a few minutes or with a single piece of evidence. For LGBTQ+ refugees fleeing Russia, the consequences could be severe. Even today, relatively few receive protection. Of roughly 8,000 asylum applications filed by Russian nationals in Germany during 2024, only 414 were approved. More than 3,600 were rejected, while another 4,000 remain suspended pending additional information. Even before the new rules, finding safety had already become extremely difficult for many.
The situation inside Russia has deteriorated dramatically over the past several years. After expanding the country's so-called "LGBT propaganda" law in 2022, the government effectively banned gender transition in 2023. At the beginning of 2024, Russia declared the so-called "international LGBT movement" an extremist organization. Since then, publicly supporting LGBTQ+ people has in many cases become enough to trigger criminal prosecution. In Russia's Orenburg region, the first criminal case under the country's "LGBT extremism" law is already underway. Several defendants face prison sentences of up to ten years simply because they worked at a local gay club.
The new asylum pact adds another obstacle. The European Union has expanded the concept of so-called safe third countries. Anyone who entered the EU through a country designated as safe could now be returned there without having their asylum application fully examined by an EU member state. At the same time, accelerated procedures are intended to produce decisions much more quickly. Lawyers warn that this poses serious risks for Russian refugees. Many reach Europe through Armenia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, or Uzbekistan. Individual EU countries could designate these states as safe third countries because bilateral agreements already exist. For LGBTQ+ people, however, those countries are often anything but safe. Kazakhstan tightened its policies against so-called LGBT propaganda in 2025. Uzbekistan continues to criminalize sexual relations between men. Georgia imposed sweeping restrictions on LGBTQ+ rights in 2024. Reports from Armenia also describe intimidation, family pressure, and discrimination.
Legally, the right to seek asylum remains unchanged. Russian applications must still be assessed individually. The problem is that the new procedures leave much less time to present a case. Anyone unable to immediately provide convincing evidence or secure legal representation faces a greater risk of rejection. What is presented as a faster asylum process could ultimately mean that many people lose protection before their persecution has ever been fully heard.

Geschenke an Regierungschefs in diesem Umfang nennt man klar Bestechung.
