Our investigation shows: A man who had everything - and suddenly reached for a weapon - the case of Cole Allen and his manifesto

Cole Tomas Allen was invisible to authorities. No record, no indication, no warning. Even within the vast apparatus of counterterrorism, his name never appeared. And yet this 31 year old suddenly stands at the center of an attack on one of the most sensitive political events in the United States. The attempt to break into the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton has raised not only questions about security, but also about a man who until that moment was considered entirely unremarkable.

What became visible afterward is not the image of a classic outsider. Allen studied at the California Institute of Technology, one of the most prestigious technical universities in the world, and graduated there in 2017 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He then went to IJK Controls LLC in Southern California, where he not only worked on high precision hardware, but actively redesigned existing systems. Two axis gimbals were reengineered by him, components revised in SolidWorks, taken through internal and external design reviews and then brought into production, coordinated with suppliers, within tight tolerances and budgets.

At the same time, he developed the software that makes these systems usable in the first place. Android based user interfaces for complex four axis systems were rebuilt by him, expanded, documented and cleared of legacy errors. He also maintained web based interfaces for laser communication systems, programmed with Javascript, HTML, CSS, Python and Flask, stabilized existing applications and implemented open requirements until they functioned in live operation.

The elite engineer, who was admitted to Caltech with perfect SAT scores, spoke in 2017 about a project in which he developed brakes for wheelchairs to make life easier for elderly and physically impaired people.

He analyzed vibrations in optical mounts in ANSYS, adjusted designs based on that data and developed mechanical actuators for optical systems, built prototypes and translated them into precise technical drawings according to GD and T standards. Even during his studies, he worked in a biomedical company. There he designed portable housings for medical control systems, developed electrode holders and the corresponding manufacturing tools intended to make production faster and more reliable.

Family and friends are in shock

At Caltech itself, he took responsibility for a Ditch Day project. Not a side activity, but a complex system of hardware and software. He developed Bluetooth terminals, laser based detection systems and his own Android app that establishes connections and unlocks tasks. At the same time, he coordinated a team of students, alumni and doctoral candidates, worked with administration and security departments and ensured that all components functioned simultaneously.

Alongside this technical work, Allen programmed his own video games. His project Bohrdom was created entirely on his own. The physics engine calculates collisions including rotational components, combined with hundreds of original graphics and self composed music. A complete system based entirely on his own work.

Those who knew him from that time describe him as calm, focused, deeply engaged in his projects. He was active in the Caltech Christian Fellowship, considered devout, polite and balanced. One of his former classmates says he would not have believed it if he had not seen it himself, when Allen was lying on the ground after his arrest.

The arrest followed relatively quickly - there was never any real chance of reaching the ballroom

This religious background stands in direct contrast to the image being drawn politically. Donald Trump publicly stated that Allen hated Christians. A claim that spread through statements from government circles. But the contents of the manifesto paint a different picture. In it, Allen engages extensively with Christian teachings. He rejects the idea of turning the other cheek when others are suffering and argues that looking away in such cases means complicity. He also questions the well known biblical phrase to give to the state what belongs to it, when state representatives themselves violate the law.

Cole Allen’s weapon

What stands out most is the discrepancy between his past behavior and the current allegations. During his time at university, Allen led the Nerf Club at Caltech. There he actively worked to ensure that toy weapons did not resemble real weapons. He collaborated with campus security, deescalated conflicts and was seen as someone who could calm situations. That same man drove across the country, armed with a sawed off shotgun and handguns, with the intention of killing government officials.

After the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, Donald Trump quickly shifted the focus to himself. At a press conference, he said repeated violence near him was an indication of his own importance. People with influence are targeted, he said, adding that he almost saw it as a distinction. According to police, the suspect moved through a security area toward the ballroom where Trump was seated. A motive remains unclear. The president did not respond with restraint, but with a mix of self interpretation and political demand. He explained that incidents like this showed why a new ballroom at the White House was necessary. He described the attacker as a sick individual.

The media presence outside Cole Allen’s home was massive

People from his surroundings speak of shock. They describe him as intelligent, approachable, not isolated. No indication of a criminal past. No pattern that would have made him stand out beforehand.

The FBI continues its investigation in his hometown of Torrance, California

The investigation is ongoing. Todd Blanche, acting attorney general, has ordered a review of whether Allen acted alone. At the same time, political interpretations are already spreading, trying to force the case into an ideological framework. But the information known so far shows something else. It shows a man who was not on the margins of society, but right in the middle of it.

What follows is the full text of the manifesto that Allen is said to have written before the attack. It begins with an apology and ends in a mixture of justification, anger and unsettling clarity.

Manifest of Cole Allen:

Hello everyone!

I have probably surprised a lot of people today. First, I want to apologize to everyone whose trust I have abused. I apologize to my parents for saying I had a job interview without mentioning that it was one for the “most wanted.” I apologize to my colleagues and students for saying I had a personal emergency. If anyone is reading this, I will most likely actually need one, but it is hard to claim that this situation was not self inflicted.

I apologize to everyone I traveled next to, to everyone who handled my luggage, and to everyone else in the hotel who was not a target and whom I put at risk simply by being there. I apologize to everyone who was abused or murdered before this moment, to everyone who suffered before I was able to attempt this, and to everyone who will still suffer regardless of whether I succeed or fail.

I do not expect forgiveness, but if I had seen any other way to get this close, I would have taken it. Once again, my sincere apologies.

Now to why I did all this: I am a citizen of the United States of America. What my representatives do reflects on me. And I am no longer willing to let a pedophile, rapist and traitor stain my hands with his crimes. To be honest, I have not been willing for a long time, but this is the first real opportunity I have had to do something about it.

As I say this, I also outline my rules of engagement. Members of the administration, with the exception of Mr. Patel, are targets, prioritized from top to bottom. The Secret Service is only a target if necessary and should, if possible, be neutralized without lethal force. Hotel security is not a target if it can be avoided unless it opens fire.

Capitol Police as well. Hotel staff are not targets. Guests are not targets. To minimize casualties, I use shotgun ammunition instead of full metal rounds, as it penetrates walls less easily. I would still go through most of those here if absolutely necessary to reach the targets, as most have consciously chosen to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist and traitor and are therefore complicit, but I very much hope it does not come to that.

Objection 1: As a Christian you should turn the other cheek. Answer: Turning the other cheek applies when you yourself are oppressed. I am not the person being raped in a camp. I am not the fisherman executed without trial. I am not a schoolchild blown into the air, not a starving child, not a young woman being abused. Turning the other cheek when others are oppressed is not Christian behavior, but complicity in the crimes of the oppressor.

Objection 2: This is not a good time. Answer: Anyone who thinks that should take a moment and realize that the world does not revolve around them. If I see someone being raped or murdered, should I just walk away because it would be inconvenient for others? This was the best time and the best opportunity I could find.

Objection 3: You did not get them all. Answer: You have to start somewhere.

Objection 4: As a half Black, half white person you should not do this. Answer: I do not see anyone else acting.

Objection 5: Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s. Answer: The United States is governed by law, not by individuals. If representatives and judges do not follow the law, no one is obligated to obey them.

I also want to thank many people, as I will probably not be able to speak to them again. Thank you to my family, privately and in the church, for your love over these 31 years. Thank you to my friends for many shared years. Thank you to my colleagues for professionalism and positivity. Thank you to my students for your enthusiasm. Thank you to all acquaintances for conversations and perspectives.

Thank you all.

Cole Allen

PS: What is the Secret Service actually doing? I expected cameras, checks and armed personnel. Instead nothing. No security during transport, not at the hotel, not at the event. I was able to walk in with multiple weapons without anyone reacting. This overconfidence is alarming. If I had been a foreign agent, I could have brought in much heavier weapons. This is unbelievable.

And if anyone wants to know what this feels like: it is terrible. I want to throw up, I want to cry over everything I will never do, over the trust I have destroyed. At the same time, I feel anger over what this government has done.

Would not recommend it. Stay in school.

End of the manifesto.

The words are now out in the open, unfiltered and uncut. They do not show a clear line, but an internal conflict that erupted into action. And above all, they show how someone justifies his own violence while at the same time knowing what he is destroying.

Social media and a world that is not like this

This statement by Karoline Leavitt, which has been presented as supposed evidence, is also misleading and fits into the current media and social media dynamic:

"I'll tell you, this speech tonight will be a classic by Donald J. Trump. It will be fun, it will be entertaining. There will be some shots tonight in the room,"

This is not an indication that the shooting was staged, but a phrase she frequently uses and that is common in U.S. English in this context. What is concerning is how people are stirred up simply through false context or misinterpreted statements in U.S. English. Even more concerning is how these baseless claims are defended.

Perhaps the real problem is not doubt itself - doubt has always been a legitimate tool - but the speed at which it turns into certainty today. What Cole Allen brought to that podium was a person with a weapon and a motive that investigators are still trying to unravel. What grew out of it afterward were a hundred ready made answers before a single question had been properly asked.

Yes, Trump has lied - documented, repeatedly, without hesitation. But that fact is not a free pass to press every new case into the same old template. Every event deserves its own patience. Investigation takes time, costs money, requires the willingness to possibly end up with nothing. Conspiracy theories require none of that - they only cost reality. Many people in the world need to learn again to listen more carefully.

The only question that matters at this moment is this: What must have happened to a country under its government for someone like Cole Allan - successful, established, with a life that outwardly seemed to function - to be driven to such an act?
