Musk Crippled Ukraine's Drone Defenses While Putin Keeps Bombing: Trump Plays Dumb and Russia Reaps the Benefits

Elon Musk ordered the military-grade Starlink connections used by Ukraine to be throttled. A decision made in America, with consequences being felt immediately on the Ukrainian front lines. Interceptor drones lose their connections at higher speeds, making it easier for Russian missiles to get past Ukraine's defenses. Since October 14, Ukrainian soldiers have been dealing with restrictions they apparently weren't warned about beforehand. The government in Kyiv was caught off guard. While Russian missiles threaten Ukrainian cities, the richest man in the world is interfering with the very technology their defenders depend on. Musk is sitting far away from the war. The people under Russian attack don't have the luxury of that distance.

There's nothing innocent about what led up to this. Trump had gotten furious over Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries and publicly lashed out at Zelenskyy on October 10. Ukraine could attack Russia all it wanted, but it had damn well better leave the refineries alone. Rising diesel prices were a global problem, after all. "He better damn well stop," Trump demanded. Musk piled on: Zelenskyy had gone too far. Four days later, Ukrainian drone crews lost their previously unrestricted satellite connections. What had worked before was suddenly restricted. The American president demands that Ukraine spare Russian refineries while Russian missiles continue striking Ukrainian cities. A peculiar idea of whose safety deserves protecting.

The technical consequences are serious. According to military analyst Michael Kofman, Ukrainian attack and interceptor drones remain restricted at speeds of around 160 kilometers per hour. Connections reportedly drop out even below 130 kilometers per hour. Ukrainian officials say Russian missiles were able to get past their defenses because of it. How many attacks directly benefited from these restrictions remains unknown. Zelenskyy explicitly warned that people could die if the previous level of access wasn't restored. For an interceptor drone crew, losing a connection is no minor technical inconvenience. While the drone loses contact, the Russian missile keeps flying.

Meanwhile, Washington is putting on an astonishing display of everyone claiming they're not responsible. Musk publicly claimed that such restrictions were decided by the U.S. military and ultimately by the president. Trump, on the other hand, insisted he didn't know who was responsible. Some administration officials said Musk had acted on his own. Others reported that he had spoken with Trump and other senior administration officials before making his decision. After the throttling became public, Musk and Trump spoke on the phone again. Employees of Musk's space company contacted the White House to coordinate a common account of what had happened. Apparently, figuring out how to explain the situation publicly is now easier than restoring a connection Ukrainian soldiers depend on.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth denied that his department had issued any such order. The company, he said, could make its own decisions about its terms of service. Secretary of State Marco Rubio rejected Zelenskyy's accusation that Washington had temporarily withheld intelligence about Russian missile launches. He did, however, acknowledge the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv. Ukraine's representative in Washington, Denys Sienik, was still waiting Tuesday for an official explanation from the Pentagon and the company. Even the question of whether the previous level of access would be restored remained unanswered.

Trump blames Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities for rising diesel prices. Experts see the war against Iran as a bigger driver of those prices. Ahead of November's congressional elections, Trump wants cheaper fuel. Meanwhile, Zelenskyy traveled to Norway to discuss ending the war with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff. Back home, his soldiers are without reliable connections. Relations between Washington and Kyiv are at their lowest point since Trump publicly humiliated Zelenskyy in the Oval Office last year. With a single technical decision, Musk has directly interfered with Ukraine's ability to fight the war. Trump claims he doesn't know who's responsible. Meanwhile, Russian missiles need neither an American explanation nor the White House's permission.
