03:33 Uhr Climate Science Held Hostage: 195 Countries Fight Over Deadlines as Global Warming Continues
The world's leading international climate science body, the IPCC, has ended its meeting in Addis Ababa without reaching an agreement. For nearly 3 years, member countries have been arguing over when the next scientific reports on global warming should be published. Now crucial findings may be missing from the UN climate talks in November 2028, when countries review the climate action they have taken so far. A group of 30 countries is pushing for the findings to be ready on time, while India, China, and Russia, along with other countries, are demanding more preparation time so scientists from poorer nations can also make meaningful contributions. The meeting was suspended after numerous delegations from particularly poor countries and small island nations had to leave. Tina Stege, climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, called it a shameful delay when there was no time left to waste. Even the budget remains unresolved. While politicians argue over publication dates, the UN Environment Programme warns that climate action remains inadequate and that the risks from global warming are growing.

09:18 PM A Questionable Promise: Putin Promises the Pope Help for Ukrainian Civilians While Russia Occupies Their Town
Pope Leo urged Vladimir Putin on Friday to agree to a ceasefire in the southern Ukrainian town of Oleshky so food and medical supplies could reach the trapped civilian population. Civilians should also be allowed to evacuate voluntarily. According to the Kremlin, Putin expressed his support for the Vatican's initiative and agreed to cooperate. The town is under Russian control, and Ukrainian forces want to retake it. Moscow and Kyiv accuse each other of blocking aid deliveries. Whether Putin will actually agree to a ceasefire and allow humanitarian supplies through without interference remains an open question. So far, all there is is a promise from Moscow.
05:15 AM Oregon: 16-Year-Old Shoots His Way Through Locked School Doors, Kills 3 Children and a Teacher, Armed Community Member Shoots and Kills Attacker
At 12:59 p.m., an emergency call comes in to police in Bend, Oregon. A person reports that someone has fired multiple shots at their vehicle with a long gun. Minutes later, the gunman reaches Silver Rail Elementary School. The doors are locked. The 16-year-old shoots through them and enters the building, where around 450 children attend classes. Police arrive at 1:02 p.m. Shortly afterward, the attacker is shot and killed by an armed community member who had seen him entering the school and followed him inside. For 3 children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher, help comes too late. A 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher are rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Governor Tina Kotek thanks the community member for intervening. Police Chief Mike Krantz says his officers spent an entire day in August training for exactly this kind of attack. At American elementary schools, preparing for armed attackers has long since become part of everyday life. Children learn to read while adults have to practice how to protect them from someone carrying a rifle. After Columbine and Sandy Hook, America is once again confronting the consequences of its gun violence. 3 children will never come home again.
