12:40 PM Supreme Court Heads Into Another Trump Round: How Far Can the President Go?

The Supreme Court begins another round in the power struggle over Donald Trump's presidency on Monday. After a term in which the conservative majority repeatedly granted Trump far-reaching powers while also drawing limits on tariffs, birthright citizenship, and the Federal Reserve, the next conflicts are already lined up. The Court will hear cases involving key parts of his deportation policy, including detention without a hearing on release on bail and deportations to third countries. Other cases could involve Trump's ban on transgender people in the military, cuts to research funding, his intervention involving federal prosecutors, and the suspension of asylum rights at the border with Mexico. The Supreme Court is no longer deciding only individual government actions, but again and again how far a president may stretch existing laws, bypass them, or enforce his will against other branches of government. For Trump, this begins another legal test before the very court whose conservative majority he himself played a decisive role in shaping.

04:14 AM Judge Todd Edelman shuts down Trump’s Reflecting Pool case - charges against former Olympian permanently dismissed

Judge Todd Edelman in Washington has permanently dismissed the case against former Olympian David Hearn. The dismissal was “with prejudice,” meaning prosecutors cannot simply refile the charge. Hearn had been accused of damaging the Reflecting Pool. New documents from the Interior Department showed, however, that the damage apparently resulted from a botched installation by a contractor. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro had already dropped the case at the end of July for that reason. Trump publicly attacked her afterward and still continued claiming that Hearn had caused the damage.

01:30 AM Trump sends 3rd aircraft carrier toward Iran - 9,000 more troops on the way

Washington is massively increasing its military presence in the Middle East: Around 9,000 more troops are on the way, including more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. With the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a 3rd U.S. aircraft carrier could be in the region by the end of October, bringing the total to more than 20,000 Navy personnel and Marines along with hundreds of aircraft. Trump is explicitly keeping new bombing of Iran after the midterm elections on the table and openly says Tehran’s latest ceasefire proposal was “not good enough” for him. At the same time, he claims early indications point to an Iranian connection to the attack by a FlyDubai co-pilot, but offers no details. If that is confirmed, Trump is threatening harsh retaliation. What began as a war that was supposed to last only weeks is looking more and more like a conflict for which Washington is now bringing in even more carriers, troops, and firepower.

07:57 PM Supreme Court reviews Trump’s detention policy - millions of immigrants could be affected

The Supreme Court will review whether immigrants already living in the United States can be held in detention during deportation proceedings without a hearing to determine whether they could be released. The Trump administration argues that mandatory detention is legal and relies on a 1996 law. Several appeals courts disagree and have ruled that detention without a bond hearing is unlawful, while the 5th and 8th Circuit Courts have supported Trump’s position. The case involves Brazilian citizen Ricardo Aparecido Barbosa da Cunha, who has lived in the United States for around 20 years, has never been charged with or convicted of a crime, and has remained detained without a bond hearing since his 2025 arrest. The ACLU warns that millions of noncitizens could be affected under the government’s interpretation, regardless of how long they have lived in the country. The Supreme Court’s decision could either cement or limit a central part of Trump’s deportation policy.

09:40 AM U.S. officials now see a Chinese attack on Taiwan before 2028 as increasingly unlikely

U.S. government officials now believe China probably will not attack Taiwan as early as 2027, even though Xi Jinping wants the People’s Liberation Army ready by then for a possible operation. The reasons include delays in military readiness and Xi’s anti-corruption campaign, which has removed numerous senior officers from the system. Taiwan’s 2028 election is another factor, and Beijing is apparently watching closely to see how that turns out. Another victory by the Democratic Progressive Party, especially a reelection of President Lai Ching-te, could make the situation considerably more tense afterward. The 2028 U.S. election also plays a role according to some American officials, but is not seen as a decisive factor. Washington also believes China has learned from the wars in Iran and Ukraine that any attack on Taiwan would have to be decided quickly. According to the U.S. assessment, too many of the military pieces needed for that are still not in place. The only strange part is Trump’s offer to let China buy weapons in the United States while a new U.S. weapons package for Taiwan worth around $14 billion remains on hold.
