“The Freedom of the Individual and the Breath of All: Hegseth Made the Flu Shot Optional, Then the Fever Came to Lackland”

Pete Hegseth made the flu vaccine optional in April, in the name of faith and bodily self determination. Seven weeks later, a wave of influenza tore through the open sleeping bays of the recruits at Lackland. Nearly one hundred sixty fell ill, and one young soldier died.

A severe flu outbreak at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, sickened nearly one hundred sixty service members, at least one hundred fifty nine reported cases and two hospitalizations, less than two months after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that American troops would no longer be required to receive the flu vaccine. It moved through a training squadron of recruits, where the new arrivals sleep in open bays on bunk beds and eat together at long tables, a place built in such a way that nothing about one body remains private, least of all its breath.

One recruit in the sixth week of basic training, Keon McDaniel, became ill on a Friday, was taken to Brooke Army Medical Center, and died. The Air Force says a comprehensive medical investigation will determine the cause and that whether his death was connected to the flu outbreak has not yet been established. His name belongs in the record before any argument does.

Since the policy took effect on April 21, only around forty percent of Air Force recruits chose vaccination, which had previously been mandatory for all. After the outbreak, the Air Force created an exception to its own voluntary rule and ordered every recruit at Lackland to receive the shot to stop the spread. The freedom lasted exactly as long as it took to be tested.

Hegseth had framed the decision as a matter of religious freedom and medical self determination. In a video in April, he said that under the disastrous Biden administration, the Department of Defense had waged an unrelenting war against its own troops, including by denying them medical self determination and the right to express their religious beliefs. He called the previous requirement an irrational and intrusive order that had weakened the nation’s readiness for combat. Elsewhere he described it simply as not reasonable.

Hegseth’s argumentation, bodily self determination, skepticism toward government vaccine mandates, and the primacy of individual choice, resembles lines of argument that in Germany during the vaccine mandate debates were primarily associated with the AfD.

The word he chose was readiness, and readiness is exactly what a flu outbreak takes away. A rule exists in a barracks for the same reason a levee exists during a flood, not because the individual man is unfree, but because many people share one breath. Giving every recruit in an open bay back his private right means handing that same room over to the pathogen.

Many lawmakers, including respected Republicans, reacted to the decision with unease. Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi, who chairs the Armed Services Committee and served in the Air Force himself, said the vaccine had been required to increase readiness and added that when you take the oath, you give up certain rights, that is simply part of it. The recruit gives up many things with that oath. The secretary gave one thing back, and it was the wrong one.

Sean Parnell, the chief spokesman for the Department of Defense, defended the move and said the changes were based on thorough risk assessments aimed at increasing readiness and the lethality of the force. Air Force representatives described the outbreak as limited to the training squadron, said medical personnel were monitoring the situation and offering antiviral medication to those who had contact with infected recruits, and that recruits would return to training once physicians cleared them. The White House referred questions to the Defense Department. The outbreak illustrates the risk of the administration’s broader posture toward vaccines. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose tone has become milder since spring, spent years loudly questioning the safety and effectiveness of many common vaccines and last summer withdrew the federal recommendation for flu vaccines containing thimerosal, a mercury based preservative that anti vaccine activists falsely linked to autism.

Trump, who praised the Covid vaccine during the first months of the pandemic in 2020 and later turned against vaccine mandates once his supporters began questioning him, received both shots at Walter Reed in October 2025, for Covid and for influenza. The freedom to refuse is recommended to the recruit and not exercised by the president. Since taking office, Hegseth has pushed to bring back the roughly eight thousand seven hundred service members who voluntarily left or were forced out because they refused the Covid vaccine before that requirement ended in 2023, restoring their former rank along with back pay and benefits. By last summer, thirteen had returned, and in March he extended the application deadline until April 1, 2027. Soldiers are still required to be vaccinated against diseases such as measles and mumps, and against polio, and depending on risk and assignment, against anthrax.

In April, in the same breath in which he made the vaccine optional, Hegseth encouraged troops to take it anyway and said the department would not force them because their body, their faith, and their convictions were not negotiable. But a body in an open bay is negotiable whether it says so or not, negotiating every night with every other body breathing the same darkness. He gave them a freedom that only one person needed to use for the rest to lose theirs, and somewhere in the sixth week of his training, a young man became ill and never stood up again. The investigation will name a cause. It will not name the conviction that prepared the room for it.
