While the war continues to escalate, information from the innermost circle of power of the Islamic Republic suddenly moves to the center of attention. Mojtaba Khamenei, the new Supreme Leader of Iran and son of the killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is said to have been secretly taken out of the country after suffering serious injuries during airstrikes. Investigations and several reports draw an unusual picture. According to these reports Mojtaba Khamenei was flown out of Iran shortly after the attacks under the strictest secrecy. The aircraft is said to have been a Russian military plane. The destination of the operation was Moscow.
There Khamenei is said to have undergone surgery because of severe leg injuries. According to several sources the procedure did not take place in an ordinary hospital but in one of the presidential palaces of Vladimir Putin. The operation is said to have been successful. None of this has been officially confirmed so far. There has been no statement from Tehran. No explanation has yet come from Moscow either. Yet the possibility alone casts another light on the situation of the Iranian leadership.
We are currently investigating this subject intensively. We cannot provide one hundred percent confirmation at this point. Several indications from different sources converge in the same direction. If it is confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei was secretly taken out of the country after the airstrikes it would be an extraordinary step. The Supreme Leader is the central figure of power in the Islamic Republic. Removing him from the country during a war would show how great the pressure on the Iranian leadership has become. The possible location of the treatment is politically sensitive. The fact that Mojtaba Khamenei may have been taken to Russia of all places would underline the close strategic connection between Tehran and Moscow. Both states have cooperated militarily and politically for years especially since the war in Ukraine and the intensified cooperation in weapons and technology.
The choice of a presidential palace for the operation would also be remarkable. It would indicate that the process was not only medically but also politically secured. Inside Iran information control continues. Official appearances of the new Supreme Leader are rare and state media report little about his health condition. Precisely for that reason reports about injuries or treatment abroad spread particularly quickly.
If it is confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei was indeed secretly flown to Moscow it would show more than a medical treatment. It would show how close the political and military connection between Tehran and Moscow has become and how vulnerable even the top of the Iranian power structure may have become in this war.
