The Gulf Disappears – and Delta Rewrites History

It sounds like a scene from an absurd play: A flight captain opens his navigation manual, the sober revision highlights – and suddenly finds politics. In black and white it says:

“‘Gulf of Mexico’ was changed to ‘Gulf of America.’”

No misunderstanding, no footnote. For Delta pilots, the Gulf of Mexico no longer exists – at least not on paper. It is the practical implementation of Trump’s Executive Order 14172, which was signed back in January but has only now made its way into the cockpits. What still looked like a media stunt on May 8 has now become reality: Geography is being rewritten, line by line, checklist by checklist.

One can vividly imagine the scene on board. Shortly before Houston, the co-pilot leans forward and says dryly: “We are approaching the Gulf of America.” It feels as if the crews have switched on the language police along with the autopilot. And the entry goes even further:

“‘Notice to Air Missions’ was changed to ‘Notice to Airmen.’”

Here, too, symbolic politics resonate. Back to the old formulations, away from any trace of neutrality. In a technical document that should really only know courses, altitudes and frequencies, the cultural politics of the White House are now breaking through.

Delta has thus become the most visible example of how a symbolic decree from Washington finds its way into everyday life. The gulf itself remains the same, the coasts as well – only the words are new. Mexico has sharply protested, the international community so far ignores the name change. But in the United States people are already relearning: in databases, on maps, in manuals. And whoever flies over Texas in the future will hear it – in the cabin, over the radio, as the new reality. It is as if a country is taking its passengers on a journey that leads not only through the sky but also through a rewritten world.

Es wird nicht richtiger, je öfter man es wiederholt.
Die Piloten müssen sich dran halten, sonst sind sie ihre Jobs lis.
Zumindest bei US amerikanischen Fluggesellschaften.
