Eight Points Ahead - And the Republic Keeps Looking Away

The AfD now stands at twenty nine percent and has expanded its lead over the Christian Democrats to eight points. The CDU and CSU have lost another point and slipped to twenty one percent. Just a few years ago, such a gap would have been unthinkable. Today it is almost treated like an ordinary news item. That is precisely where the real problem lies. What was once considered a political state of emergency has become routine. The party convention in Erfurt showed just how skillfully the AfD now presents itself. Discipline on the outside, the same faces and the same goals on the inside. The shrill tones have become quieter. The direction has not changed. Anyone who believes less volume means less radicalism is confusing the packaging with the product.

The federal government has been handing the AfD exactly the opportunities it could have hoped for over the past several months. Economic uncertainty, rising financial pressure, coalition infighting, and an immigration policy that many people see as contradictory are driving more and more voters into the arms of the opposition. Social injustice is no substitute for good governance. The Christian Democrats increasingly resemble a government without a clear direction. Whenever their poll numbers decline, they begin publicly distancing themselves from their own course, while very little actually changes in terms of policy. A government that bears responsibility while trying to distance itself from the consequences of its own decisions ultimately convinces no one. That is exactly the opening the AfD continues to exploit. The real warning, therefore, is not the twenty nine percent. It is the fact that more and more people are becoming accustomed to numbers like these. Democracies rarely disappear in a single day.

The Numbers Tell One Story - America Feels Another

For months, Donald Trump has pointed to falling unemployment and stable economic figures. On paper, he can even support that argument. The unemployment rate stands at 4.2 percent, new applications for unemployment benefits remain low, and millions of job openings still exist. But anyone who looks only at those numbers misses the real story. In June, the American economy created just 57,000 new jobs. That is less than half as many as the previous month. At the same time, previously reported employment figures were revised downward. Companies continue to advertise open positions, but they are becoming increasingly reluctant to actually hire people. That is not a sign of strength. It is a sign of caution.

Consumers paint an even clearer picture. Confidence in the economy remains unusually weak despite slightly lower gasoline prices. The consequences of the Iran war continue to be felt. Higher energy prices have pushed inflation higher once again. Many households are losing purchasing power in real terms and are thinking twice before spending money. The contradiction is particularly visible in the labor market. The unemployment rate declined slightly, but mainly because many people stopped looking for work and are therefore no longer counted as unemployed. That is not a success story. Even somewhat lower mortgage rates do little to change that reality. As long as prices rise faster than incomes and companies slow their hiring, uncertainty remains greater than any headline celebrating individual economic indicators. America's economy may appear stable from the outside. For many people, everyday life already feels very different.

Trump Rediscovers Communism - And Turns It Into His Next Campaign

Donald Trump has dusted off an old political enemy. Not China. Not Russia. Communism. Over the past several days, he has repeatedly claimed that the Democratic Party is becoming a communist party. During a visit to the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, he even called it the greatest threat facing the United States, greater than Pearl Harbor, World War II, or September 11. Just days earlier, he referred to Democrats at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference as "hardcore, godless communists." Democrats have increasingly become "Dumocrats" in his rhetoric, a mocking nickname he now uses more and more often.

The timing is no coincidence. Several democratic socialists have won primary elections, giving Trump exactly the opening he has been looking for for years. He turns a handful of candidates into an entire party. He turns political opponents into enemies. In a campaign, that often works better than any debate about inflation, the national debt, or health care costs. Historians and political scientists, however, strongly reject that portrayal. Marc Selverstone of the Miller Center at the University of Virginia, who has studied international communism, says that even politicians on the left wing of the Democratic Party remain far removed from the basic principles of communism. No one is calling for the abolition of private property or a centrally planned economy. Democratic socialists advocate a stronger social safety net, higher taxes on the wealthy, stricter regulation of large corporations, and broader access to health care. That is something entirely different from communism.

Even the Communist Party USA offers no support for Trump's accusations. Its co-chair, Joe Sims, said he is not aware of any of the Democratic candidates currently under discussion who belongs to his party or embraces Marxism in the tradition of the Communist Party. Even Darializa Avila Chevalier, who openly describes herself as a democratic socialist and came under criticism over earlier posts related to communist themes, explicitly stated that she is not a communist. Graham Platner, who won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate in Maine and came under scrutiny because of older online comments, likewise stated clearly that he is neither a communist nor a socialist. For Trump, however, this language remains politically useful. As early as 2024, he openly declared that all one had to do was portray the political opponent as a communist or a socialist, and the election would be won. He has relied on that strategy for years. His former mentor, Roy Cohn, once served as chief counsel to the notorious Senator Joseph McCarthy, who branded countless Americans as communists without evidence during the 1950s, helping create one of the darkest chapters in modern American political history.

That is where the real story lies. It is no longer about whether Democrats are communists. According to virtually every expert, there is no factual basis for that claim. It is about the fact that political competition is increasingly being transformed into a moral war of destruction. Once an opponent is no longer described as a political rival but as an existential threat to the nation, there is no longer any reason to debate that person's arguments. That is exactly what Donald Trump has been doing for years - and apparently he believes the strategy will work once again in the 2026 midterm elections.

Putin Writes to Trump - And Suddenly History Sounds Surprisingly Friendly Again

On the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of the United States, Vladimir Putin personally congratulated Donald Trump. In his letter, he addressed the American president as "Dear Donald," described the Declaration of Independence of 1776 as a milestone in world history, and wished him health and success, while wishing the American people happiness and prosperity. Just a few years ago, such words would have been almost unimaginable. Most striking, however, is Putin's view of the shared past. He writes that Russia gave its unconditional support to the North American colonies in their struggle against British rule. History, however, is not quite that simple. The Russian Empire did not fight alongside the colonies and did not recognize the United States until after the War of Independence had ended. It is true, however, that Catherine the Great refused Britain's request for military assistance and, through her policy of Armed Neutrality, made Britain's naval blockade considerably more difficult.

Putin also turned to World War II. Russia and the United States, he wrote, had together freed humanity from the horrors of Nazism, and as the world's two largest nuclear powers they continue to bear a special responsibility for global security and stability. That statement stands out because the official Russian narrative has frequently downplayed America's role in the war in recent years. While Moscow has never completely denied the alliance with the United States, Russian officials have repeatedly emphasized that Lend-Lease was a paid service and that the Soviet Union would have won the war even without Western assistance.

In closing, Putin looked toward the future. Constructive, equal, and mutually beneficial relations between Moscow and Washington, he wrote, are in the interest not only of both countries but of the entire international community. After years of threats, sanctions, and war, it almost sounds like a message from another era. Whether it becomes more than polite words on America's Independence Day will not be decided in a letter. It will be decided where politics meets reality.

The Church Loses Its Patience - And Hundreds of Thousands Stand With the Excommunicated

The Vatican wanted to send a clear message. Instead, it exposed a conflict that has been smoldering beneath the surface of the Catholic Church for more than half a century. By excommunicating the priests and bishops of the Society of St. Pius X, Pope Leo XIV hoped to bring their followers back into the official Church. That is not what is happening. Many remain loyal. Some appear more determined than ever. In Écône, Switzerland, where Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre established the Society's first seminary in 1970, the group consecrated four new bishops last week against the explicit wishes of the Pope. Around 17,000 people attended the ceremony. One day later, the Vatican declared the Society to be in schism. Six bishops and all of its priests were excommunicated. According to Rome, marriages and confessions performed by their clergy are now considered invalid. Even ordinary members of the faithful now risk excommunication if they remain loyal to the Society.

That, however, is precisely where Rome is meeting resistance. Blandine Guillaumin, a teacher at one of the Society's schools in France, openly says the decision changes nothing. In her view, it is not the Vatican that represents the true Catholic faith, but the Society of St. Pius X. Similar views are expressed by followers in Argentina, Italy, and Switzerland. They do not believe the Society has broken away from the Church. They believe the Church has broken away from its own teachings.

The conflict dates back to the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and 1965. During that period, the Catholic Church opened itself to the modern world, allowed Mass to be celebrated in local languages, encouraged dialogue with other religions and Christian denominations, and changed its approach to many theological questions. Those are precisely the reforms the Society continues to reject. It remains committed to the Traditional Latin Mass and views the Council as the beginning of the Church's decline. Pope Leo XIV strongly rejects that position. Anyone who refuses to accept fundamental elements of Church teaching, he argues, places himself outside the communion of the Church. Andrea Tornielli of the Vatican's communications department likewise stated that the Society has moved far away from the Catholic faith because it refuses to accept the diversity of Catholic teaching.

The response from Écône was nevertheless remarkable. Superior General Davide Pagliarani described the Vatican's decision as objectively unjust and invalid. At the same time, he declared that the Society accepts it without bitterness or rebellion and will love the Holy Church even more in the future. That combination of open rejection and simultaneous loyalty reveals the real dilemma. Both sides claim to represent the same Church. Both insist they are defending its true teaching. Buenos Aires shows just how deep the divide has become. Economics student Thiago Berlanga says he will continue attending the Society's Masses. "The heretics are the others," he says. He accuses the official Church of blessing same sex unions, giving Communion to divorced Catholics, and placing the Catholic faith on the same level as other religions. Some sermons, he says, now sound more like lectures than acts of worship.

In Italy, Father Gabriele D'Avino, who ministers to roughly two thousand followers, says that only one family has left the Society since the excommunications. Everyone else, he says, understands the issue and does not feel affected by the Vatican's sanctions. For Rome, this has become far more than an internal dispute within the Church. The Society officially numbers only about 1,500 members, yet it claims between 300,000 and 600,000 followers worldwide. What began as a disciplinary measure could become a lasting division. The Vatican intended to force a return. At the moment, it appears to have sealed the split instead.

History by Script - How Trump Is Rewriting America's Past

The battle over America's future is no longer being fought only in Congress or in the courts. It is now unfolding in classrooms, on computer screens, and inside traveling exhibits. As the United States marks the two hundred fiftieth anniversary of its founding, a second, government funded culture of remembrance is taking shape under Donald Trump. Alongside the official America250 initiative, the White House has built Freedom 250, a separate project that also receives taxpayer funding and turns history into a political tool. Organizations including Hillsdale College, PragerU, the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, the Heritage Foundation, and Moms for Liberty serve as its driving force. Their goal is clearly stated - strengthen patriotism, reshape the way America's founding is viewed, and give young Americans a new understanding of their country's history. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon openly argues that young Americans no longer love their country because they were never taught the "right" version of its history.

The campaign goes even further through videos in which artificial intelligence brings George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams to life. These historical figures appear to speak directly to viewers, explaining the founding of the United States themselves. The problem begins where authentic historical quotations are blended with invented statements. One Freedom 250 video has John Adams declare, "Facts don't care about your feelings." In reality, that phrase belongs to conservative commentator Ben Shapiro. Adams never said it. Historians argue that this is exactly where the danger begins. Joseph McCartin of Georgetown University describes the project as a simplified heroic narrative in which only the Founding Fathers truly matter. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and John Adams become nearly flawless symbols. The difficult questions disappear. History is polished until it fits the political needs of the present.

The criticism becomes even sharper when looking at the people who are pushed completely to the margins. Black Americans who sided with Britain during the Revolution because they had been promised freedom. Enslaved people. Women. Native Americans. Poor farmers. Their experiences become little more than a footnote or disappear entirely. The result is a picture of the American Revolution that only partially reflects historical reality. Mimi Eisen of the Zinn Education Project points to Thomas Jefferson. In the Freedom 250 videos, he appears as a champion of liberty. Yet Jefferson enslaved more than six hundred people during his lifetime and relied on violence to sustain that system. When that same historical figure is presented as saying that freedom exists without coercion, history is no longer being explained. It is being rewritten.

Critics also argue that historical sources are being selectively edited. The African American poet Phillis Wheatley is quoted, yet her sharp condemnation of white colonists who demanded freedom for themselves while defending slavery is omitted. Those missing passages fundamentally change the meaning of her words and reveal that the debate over liberty was already far more complicated in 1776 than these educational materials suggest. That is why resistance is growing. Historians, teachers, and educational organizations are deliberately turning to original source documents, competing historical perspectives, and voices that have long been overlooked. For them, the purpose of teaching history is not to celebrate heroes but to understand complexity. That is what this struggle over America's two hundred fiftieth anniversary is really about. It is not about whether Americans should be proud of their history. It is about who gets to decide which history future generations will be allowed to learn.
