When the Artists Leave, Trump Steps In

byRainer Hofmann

31. May 2026

Some events lose their headline attraction shortly before they begin. Others get the President of the United States instead. That is exactly what is happening right now at the Great American State Fair in Washington. The multi-day event on the National Mall was originally intended to celebrate America's 250th birthday with concerts, exhibitions, and patriotic festivities. But after several well-known musicians withdrew from the event, Donald Trump quickly decided to take center stage himself.

It is now planned that Trump will personally lead the opening ceremony on June 24. This was confirmed by Danielle Alvarez, an adviser to Freedom 250. The organization was created by Trump through executive order and is tasked with coordinating the celebrations surrounding America's 250th anniversary. The problems began only days after the music lineup was announced. More than half of the scheduled performers withdrew their participation. Among the most prominent names were Martina McBride and Bret Michaels. Both stated that at the time they agreed to participate, they had not realized how closely the event was connected to Trump and his organization.

It is also becoming clearer why these cancellations cannot simply be dismissed as ordinary scheduling conflicts. Bret Michaels released a detailed statement explaining his withdrawal. According to him, the event had originally been presented to his team as a nonpartisan celebration of America - with music, veterans, active military personnel, first responders, teachers, and people from every walk of life at its center. As the son of a veteran, he said he had always been proud to support such events.

Michaels explained, however, that the event had since evolved into something far more divisive than originally presented. He also cited safety concerns and threats directed at fans, band members, crew members, family members, and himself. For that reason, he decided to withdraw from the performance. At the same time, he repeatedly emphasized that his decision was not a rejection of veterans, service members, or first responders, and that music should bring people together rather than divide them.

As artists remove their names from the posters, Trump appears to view the situation as an opportunity. On Truth Social, he posted an image showing himself standing alongside George Washington in front of the White House. Just hours later came the announcement that he intended to take over the opening event himself. The message was difficult to miss. Where musicians were originally expected to attract the attention, Trump once again moved himself to the center of the event.

As a result, the Great American State Fair has taken on a dynamic that goes far beyond an ordinary anniversary celebration. The more artists distance themselves from the event, the more public attention becomes focused on the man whose name triggered many of those withdrawals in the first place.

That left the entire concept of the event in turmoil.

Trump responded in his own way.

Trump claims the performers scheduled for the event are getting "the yips" and are nervous about appearing. As a result, he says he is considering stepping in himself. He describes himself as the "Number One Attraction anywhere in the World," the man who draws "much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime," and does so without even needing a guitar. He also portrays himself as the man who loves the country more than anyone else and whom some consider the "Greatest President in History (THE GOAT)."

Trump proposes replacing the "highly paid, Third Rate 'Artists'" and taking their place by delivering a major speech to move the country forward. He argues that the United States was "DEAD" two years ago and is now the "HOTTEST" country anywhere in the world. He says he does not want so called "Artists" who get paid far too much money and are still unhappy.

Instead, Trump says he wants to be surrounded only by "Happy People, Smart People, Successful People, and People that know how to WIN." He concludes by saying he has ordered his representatives to examine the feasibility of holding a large "AMERICA IS BACK" rally in which he would effectively become the main attraction.

On his Truth Social platform, he wrote that the artists had apparently become afraid. Musicians, he said, were now "getting the yips." At the same time, he floated an idea that initially sounded like one of his typical online remarks but within hours began taking concrete shape.

He said he was considering bringing the biggest attraction in the world to the event.

He was, of course, referring to himself. We already have the answer to that one:

Trump wrote that officials should examine whether a large "America Is Back" rally could be held. Shortly afterward, his advisers began working behind the scenes on the preparations. Several associates confirmed that efforts were immediately underway to turn the president's proposal into reality. In his post, Trump described himself as the man who draws larger crowds than Elvis Presley did in his prime. He said he does so without even needing a guitar. He also declared that no one loves the country more than he does. Some people, he added, even consider him the greatest president in history.

Trump also devoted several lines to the performers who withdrew. He described them as highly paid third-rate artists and said he could easily take their place. According to him, only great patriots would be invited to the rally.

Meanwhile, Freedom 250 continues to present the event as a historic national celebration. Danielle Alvarez described it as a modern world's fair intended to celebrate the people, traditions, innovations, and spirit of America. The fact that the president himself is now becoming the focal point of the opening ceremony will undoubtedly attract additional attention. At the same time, it highlights just how much the event now revolves around a single individual.

The Great American State Fair was originally scheduled to begin on June 25 and continue through July 10. Trump is now expected to open the festivities one day earlier and use the National Mall for a major political gathering that is simultaneously being marketed as an anniversary celebration. The White House remained noticeably cautious. When asked about the performer withdrawals, officials pointed out that the administration was not organizing the event.

The reality, however, is more complicated. Freedom 250 was created by Trump. The event carries his political imprint. And after numerous musicians walked away from the project, the person now standing at its center is the very man whose name prompted many of them to leave in the first place.

What began as an anniversary celebration is increasingly becoming a Trump event. For his supporters, that may be exactly the attraction. For the rest of the world, it remains what it is: a globally synchronized migraine, festively draped in flags.

Die größte Attraktion der Welt 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Trump lebt echt in einem komplett anderem Universum.

Hoffentlich gibt es ein pasr Gegenveranstaltungen von Künstlern.
Jeder Ethnie, jeder Musikrichtung. Diversität!
Natürlich mit Stars and Stripes, einer großen 250.
Damit MAGA nicht wieder brüllt, dass diese Leute die USA hassen.
Wäre ein Statement.
