By the end of the day, nearly 70 people will be counted dead, including numerous children. And it is the day a Republican congressional candidate from Georgia declares: Fake weather. Fake hurricanes. Fake floods. Fake. Fake. Fake.
The woman writing this is Kandiss Taylor. She is running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. Her biography on the platform X (formerly Twitter) reads: Christian. Georgian. Trump supporter. Jesus, guns, and babies. Her political trademark: transgressions cloaked in divine pathos. But this time, she doesn’t just cross a line – she erases it. While bodies are being recovered in Texas, the missing searched for, and survivors rescued from trees, she spreads one of the most tasteless conspiracy theories of the year. Fake weather. Real damage, she writes in another post – decorated with a dramatically staged storm photo. And she doubles down: This is not about climate change, she says, but about cloud seeding, geoengineering – that is, technological interventions in weather patterns – and deliberate manipulation. If fake weather leads to real deaths, Taylor says, then it is murder. What she’s spreading isn’t a clumsy opinion – it’s calculated madness in primary campaign mode.
But what does it say about a country when a woman like Taylor seriously has a shot at a seat in Congress? When a deadly flood is rebranded as a conspiracy – and the death of children becomes a tool for an agenda that no longer believes in God, but only in itself? Texas is not fake. The dead are not fake. The children clinging to trees for survival are not fake. But the morals of some candidates are.
