Lost Everything - Trump Thought America Belonged to Him: Now His Power Is Falling Apart and Republicans Are Trapped

byTEAM KAIZEN BLOG

4. November 2026

Two years ago, Donald Trump believed American history had proven him right. Despite his attempted coup on January 6, 2021, and his criminal conviction in connection with the Stormy Daniels hush-money payments, he returned to the White House. He won the Electoral College and, for the first time, the national popular vote. He had gained new supporters, particularly among young men, including Black and Latino voters. American sports stars celebrated their victories with his signature dance. Trump had long since become bigger than politics. His supporters saw him as someone destined to rule for an entire political generation. Even some of his opponents had come to regard his cultural influence as virtually unshakable.

On November 3, 2026, that certainty turned into a pretty sobering memory. Democrats captured both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Texas elected a Democratic senator, and so did South Carolina. In Kansas, Republicans lost a Senate seat they had held for nearly 100 years. Georgia elected Keisha Lance Bottoms as the first Black woman to serve as governor of any U.S. state. A defeat like this can hardly be explained away by a few unfortunate candidate choices. Millions of Americans used the midterm elections to pass judgment on Trump's second term. Their answer was devastating.

Trump's 2024 election victory had already raised more questions than his supporters wanted to acknowledge. Joe Biden had been politically weakened by high inflation. His decision to cling to another presidential run for so long, despite growing concerns about his age, made things even harder for Democrats. Trump benefited from that. Many voters apparently hoped for a return to the economic conditions that existed before the pandemic. They were willing to put up with his unpredictability in exchange. The idea that his victory amounted to lasting approval of his entire political agenda was a pretty bold conclusion. Inside the White House, it was soon treated as a blank check.

The new administration began radically restructuring the federal government. Federal employees lost their jobs, and agencies were gutted. Masked federal agents moved into American cities to target immigrants. People with legal status were deported. American citizens were killed during operations targeting opposition to immigration enforcement. The administration came under fierce criticism over the deadly actions of its officers. Court rulings were ignored or became the subject of drawn-out legal battles. At the same time, a political system was taking shape in which personal loyalty to the president increasingly determined who still had a future in government service.

Trump had promised to make life cheaper. Instead, his tariffs drove up prices and hurt American businesses. The war against Iran sent energy prices higher. Farmers faced rising costs for diesel and essential supplies, while families felt the economic consequences at gas stations and during their everyday grocery shopping. The administration had made the very problem that brought Trump back to power even worse. The political bill came due in the midterm elections.

Then came the serious allegations against the president and those around him. Critics accuse the administration of using public office for personal enrichment and trying to cover up Trump's connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Politically motivated prosecutions of opponents and the defiance of court orders also became the subject of fierce disputes. The evidence behind these allegations varies from case to case. But the sheer number of these conflicts has defined Trump's second term. His promise to give the American government back to its citizens now stands alongside an administration built to an extraordinary degree around the president himself.

Republicans can hardly claim that these developments had little to do with their own political beliefs. Since Trump's return, his policies have been carried out with broad support from the party. What his administration was capable of was plain to see in Washington. The radical overhaul of the federal government, along with the treatment of immigrants. The tariffs were imposed, the war was launched. The fact that voters are now holding those responsible accountable reaches far beyond the president himself.

Democrats didn't have an easy road to this victory, either. Their primaries were marked by bitter infighting. In Michigan, Haley Stevens fell out with Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed and then endorsed his Republican opponent. In Alaska, disputes surrounding another Senate candidacy weighed on the campaign. The candidate selection process in Maine was turbulent as well. Significant disagreements remain within the party over Israel and the rights of transgender people. Even so, voters turned out in unusually large numbers to support Democratic candidates Abdul EL-SAYED:. In many places, shared opposition to Trump's policies outweighed the differences between the candidates.

For the first time since Trump's return, Democrats now have the opportunity to put his administration under serious pressure through congressional investigations. They can influence decisions on additional war spending and block important appointments. At the same time, the search for a presidential candidate for 2028 is beginning within their party. Unlike in previous election cycles, there is no widely accepted leader waiting in the wings. Kamala Harris could run again, although her 2024 defeat weighs heavily on any such consideration. Democrats still have to figure out what political answers they want to offer beyond opposition to Trump.

For Republicans, the situation is even more grim. They have to figure out what their party could look like without Trump, while Trump is still sitting in the White House. For 11 years, he has increasingly bent the Republican Party to his will. Dissenters were targeted, and political careers were made dependent on his support. After an election defeat like this, a party would normally have to question its leadership. But Trump is hardly going to give up his influence willingly. The president is politically wounded and still holds considerable power. His remaining 2 years in office could therefore be especially confrontational. Any Republican effort to chart a new course would have to be carried out against the very man who still controls the party.

Trump can still issue executive orders and rally his supporters. Democratic majorities will place limits on him, but the fight over his political future has only just begun. Two years ago, the president seemed convinced that his return proved his power was everlasting. Now he has to face the fact that even a party that has almost completely submitted to a single man can be rejected by millions of voters. America brought Trump back to the White House in 2024. On November 3, 2026, it stripped him of his congressional majority.
