Trump sells the war as a business

Donald Trump said on social media on Saturday that oil tankers are currently on their way to the United States to load American oil and gas – the best and sweetest in the world, as he wrote. Shortly afterward, he added that the United States had begun clearing the Strait of Hormuz as a favor to countries like China, Japan, South Korea, France, and Germany. These countries, he said, lack the courage to do it themselves.

What Trump presents as strength is in reality the result of a serious situation. Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz since the beginning of the war – a waterway through which 20 percent of the global oil supply flows. This has driven energy prices upward and given Iran a central lever in the ongoing negotiations with Washington. The blockage hurts – Europe, Asia, the entire global economy.

Trump turns this around. He argues that the United States can step in as an alternative energy supplier and benefit from the situation. What he does not mention: if demand for American oil and gas rises, prices for American consumers rise as well – unless domestic production is expanded massively at the same time. That is not a minor detail, but the decisive question behind his calculation.

Trump said on social media that Iran’s military had been destroyed and that the United States had begun clearing the Strait of Hormuz – as a favor to countries like China, Japan, South Korea, France, and Germany, which lack the courage to do so themselves. It remained unclear whether he was referring to possible mines or Iran’s general control over the area. What remains is the image of a president framing a war, whose justification is becoming more fragile by the day, as an economic stimulus program for the American energy industry.
