July 4th is the holiest day in the American calendar. It is the day of the Declaration of Independence, of fanfares and fireworks, of family picnics and barbecues. But this year, it was also a day of contradictions - and of the limits of political symbolism. In more than 150 cities across the United States, people took to the streets to protest Donald Trump's government. They protested against disenfranchisement, politics of fear, deportations, and the dismantling of democratic principles. And yet, in the end, the verdict is sobering: the protests felt weaker than expected, their impact drowned in the haze of July 4th - not just on the streets, but above all in the public consciousness.
The idea was seductive: the national holiday as a stage for resistance, as a mirror of American double standards. What is freedom worth if millions of people do not feel safe? What does independence mean if government policy deliberately promotes exclusion, intimidation, and control? Movements like "No Kings," "Hands Off," and the "Poor People’s Campaign" sought to make exactly that visible. And they were right. But the day itself was a double-edged sword. Many people were on vacation, in a holiday mood, or simply lost in the haze of the grill. The media focus was on parades and patriotic pathos. And even in metropolises like New York or San Francisco, some protest marches felt more like gatherings than like eruptions of social resistance. A criticism that had already been voiced in advance: just because posters reading “4th of July” and “Protest” look good doesn’t mean it’s a good plan. The day may be prominent on the calendar - politically, it is not.
Compared to the mass rallies of June 14th - the day of the military parade and the great wave of protest - the demonstrations on Independence Day visibly faded. It was as if the resistance was unfolding in the shadow of the fireworks. And worse: many media outlets remained silent. Not out of ignorance alone, but out of fear - fear of political repression, of losing licenses, of attacks by Trump’s digital praetorian guard. Anyone turning on the television in South Carolina or Louisiana might have had no idea that protests were happening across the country - or that the world is increasingly recoiling in disgust from the United States. Only where it could no longer be denied, such as in Washington D.C. within view of the White House, was it reported. But even then, often only peripherally. What is happening in 2025 is no isolated phenomenon. It is the result of a society breaking apart under high pressure. The old American maxim “Everyone is the architect of their own fortune” has become a brutal dogma that displaces empathy and turns justice into a private matter. Similar things are beginning to stir in Germany - in Berlin, in Dresden, in Frankfurt/Oder. And yet it is far from too late, because German society is more enlightened, strong-willed, and not so easily entertained by a clown in a tailored suit. Those who look closely can see: the social war in the United States is not being fought by everyone. But it is being decided - between journalists, human rights organizations, and a regime doing everything it can to sell control as order. Because only those who persist can win. And every second of this effort is worth it - for freedom, for dignity, for what once made a country what it was. Chicago, Washington, and Los Angeles showed that today. We, who report, research, and document - we will not give up. We believe in the power of education, in the impact of words, in the weapon of research, in the long breath of truth. Our task is not a service - it is conviction. And our time may be harsh, but it demands integrity. Because a free society is not a gift. It is the result of every single step we take in resistance.
Schade, warum da nicht mehr dagegen angehen?
Resignation, Frustration und Angst.
Fast jeder kehrt zu seinem Business as usual zurück.
