Silence in the West Wing - Why Trump’s absence is suddenly becoming a political problem

In the White House, there is a need to respond because something has emerged that can no longer be ignored. Donald Trump has not appeared publicly since Wednesday evening, no events, no press, no image. For a president who is normally constantly present, that alone is enough to trigger a dynamic that spreads within hours. The trigger is simple. Rumors that Trump has been admitted to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. There is no evidence, but that no longer matters at this moment. When asked, White House officials confirmed that despite such rumors, Donald Trump is not at the Walter Reed Medical Center and is not being treated there.

The response from the White House is unusually aggressive. Through the Rapid Response account, the rumors are directly attacked. “Crazy liberals invent absurd conspiracy theories when the president does not speak to the press for twelve hours,” it says. At the same time, Joe Biden is brought into the argument, with the claim that he allegedly did not appear for days without triggering similar reactions. The line is clear. The absence is not explained, the criticism is attacked.

Communications Director Steven Cheung also speaks out. He chooses a calmer tone, but the substance remains the same. Trump is working continuously, he writes, without interruption in the White House and in the Oval Office. Visibility is replaced by statements about work. At the same time, one detail is deliberately circulated, which has been confirmed through reporting. A Marine guard stands in front of the West Wing. These posts secure the entrance and indicate that the president is inside the building.

Still, the problem remains. Trump has not appeared publicly since his speech on the Iran war. In that speech, he declared that the United States had “defeated and completely crushed” Iran. At the same time, he continues to ignore two downed US aircraft and the ongoing search for a missing airman. While these operations are underway, Trump posts nine messages in a single day on Truth Social. Attacks on the New York Times, self-praise for poll numbers from CPAC, statements about killed Iranian military leaders. All at once, but nothing about the current situation.

It is also notable what is missing. Trump has not appeared at the golf course this weekend. For him, this is not a minor detail, but routine. This deviation stands out precisely because it does not match his usual pattern.

The White House is trying to control the situation with counterattacks and isolated signals. But as long as Trump does not appear visibly, the questions remain. And that is exactly where the pressure now building comes from.
