Donald Trump has once again extended his hand for reconciliation - and at the same time swung a baseball bat. "I’d like to see the nation heal," he cooed into the cameras, only to call half the country "radical left lunatics" in the next breath. Imagine a doctor reaching out to encourage his patient while simultaneously slapping him in the face. That is exactly what Trump’s new "national healing" sounds like.
The staging has something almost therapeutic about it - if one understands "therapy" as a session in which the therapist blames the client for being the problem. Trump poses as the carer-in-chief who calls for unity but only on the terms of a victor who would prefer to shoot his opponents to the moon. The message is as clear as it is cynical: anyone who does not submit to the "healing process" is himself to blame for the disease.
The logic is so absurd that one can only take it seriously in Trump’s parallel universe: Charlie Kirk, who spent his life deepening divisions and cultivating scapegoats, is being turned into a martyr - and anyone who does not immediately break into tears is apparently part of the conspiracy. In other words: reconciliation now means thanking Donald Trump and politely tipping your hat. It is healing à la Trump: not with a bandage, but with a shovel - to dig the country even deeper into the ground.
So is this supposed to be the great presidential gesture? A president who puts out the flames by pouring gasoline over them and then insults the fire department as "radical leftists"? If this is the first step toward unity, then one can only hope that the second step does not lead directly into the abyss.

Derweil, fast unbemerkt, lässt Erdogan zig Oppositionelle verhaften.
