The Speech of a Hypocrite

byRainer Hofmann

Melania Trump stood on Monday at the podium of the UN Security Council and spoke about children, about peace, about hope. She stood there while the bombs were falling. This is not irony, this is business. This is normality in a world that long ago stopped contradicting itself. The First Lady sits in the president’s seat of the most powerful body of the United Nations - a first for the spouse of a head of state - and speaks of the United States standing alongside all children worldwide. At the same moment, American aircraft are bombing Iranian cities. At the same moment, bombs hit a school in southern Iran. 165 dead. At least. This is not new. But it is done without any hesitation.

What kind of reality are we actually living in here?

Iran’s UN ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said what had to be said: This is deeply shameful. This is hypocrisy. America preaches the protection of children and bombs schools. This is no longer a contradiction, it is a strategy. It is the language of a superpower that has learned that reality is negotiable if one only speaks loudly enough. Guterres, the UN Secretary General, did condemn the strikes. Half heartedly. Protocol. The great powers speak their sentences, and afterward life goes on, and the bombs do as well.

But there is something else that is even more interesting. In January, the Trump administration cut funding for the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General for Children and Armed Conflict. That is the department that documents what wars do to children. The reports that uncover violence and rape. The reports that can trigger measures. Trump turned it off. UNICEF received less money. UNESCO was left.

Melania speaks of education, and her husband’s administration strangles the institutions that are meant to protect education. That is the logic of this government: Speak the opposite of what you do. And if it is loud enough, if it is said on the right stage, people will believe it - or they will give up believing anything at all.

In the summer, Melania Trump wrote a letter to Vladimir Putin before he met her husband. She later said that it helped a group of Ukrainian children return to their families. Melania Trump had nothing to do with the return of those seven children. Her portrayal was politically motivated and tasteless.

From Russia to Trauma – Russia’s Attack on Ukrainian Identity and Melania’s Claim

Our article from December 7, 2025

There are crimes executed so deliberately that at some point one must stop speaking of isolated cases. The abduction of Ukrainian children is one of them. It is systematic, planned, and built over years. 19,546 children are considered abducted, over one million live under Russian control without any legal path home. 2,245 are missing, nearly 700 have been killed, more than 2,000 injured. And only 1,850 have been brought home so far – each one after months of diplomacy, covert routes, and international assistance.

But here is the question that really should be asked: If Melania Trump is so deeply engaged with children, if she advocates for their release - why is she silent about what she must know? Melania Trump was not unfamiliar with Epstein. The contacts were more than incidental. And if the United States truly were a nation of law when it comes to children, then she would have to testify before the Oversight Committee. Not as First Lady, but as a witness.

But that will not happen. Instead, she will continue to stand on podiums and speak of peace while the bombs do their work. That is America today: A country that stands for hypocrisy. For religious zeal disguised as morality. For corruption that does not even bother to hide anymore. World leaders remain silent. They know what is happening. They know who is bombing whom and who is financing what and who is telling which lies. Melania Trump speaks. That is all.

Dear readers,
we do not sit in comfort and write about the world. We are where it hurts. But we do not stop at writing. We provide concrete help. We stand up for human rights and international law - as a matter of principle. Against abuse of power. Against a politics that governs through fear and sacrifices the vulnerable to serve the powerful. Looking away has never been neutral. It has always benefited those who rely on no one paying attention.
