Welcome to the new reality of Washington, D.C., where political dramas are now written at the level of third-rate Netflix series, yet with the pretension of divine revelation. Tulsi Gabbard, once a beacon of progressive hope, now Director of National Intelligence under Donald Trump, has – so she solemnly declares – cracked the code of the Deep State. 100 pages of documents, classified, deciphered, decrypted. The content? The Obama administration, according to Gabbard, orchestrated a conspiracy of the highest treason. Brennan, Clapper, Comey – all villains out of a Shakespearean drama, allegedly aiming to overthrow Donald Trump before he even sent his first tweet as president. The accusation is nothing less than: a silent coup. In the United States. By intelligence chiefs. Against a reality-TV figure with nuclear codes. That Gabbard not only denies all prior reports of Russian interference but also ignores every Republican-led investigative committee, including the Senate report endorsed by Marco Rubio, seems not to bother her. Facts, after all, are just opinions once you have an official government seal.

But anyone who thinks Barack Obama will tremble under these accusations severely underestimates the man. The 44th President of the United States, well-read, deliberate, with that smile that lies somewhere between stoic nobility and polite mockery, has survived far greater attacks. He danced with birther theories, was daily labeled a Marxist and a Muslim by Fox News, and accomplished in eight years what Gabbard has yet to achieve: governing. With dignity. The tragedy of this whole performance does not even lie in its political substance – which is as thin as instant coffee – but in the symbolic violence with which memory and truth are being dismantled today. When a Director of National Intelligence seriously demands the prosecution of former government officials for allegedly recognizing and publicly reporting Russian interference, it is not whistleblowing – it is revenge politics at its lowest. One need not be a fan of the CIA to see: what Gabbard is doing here is not clarification but distortion. Not a defense of the Constitution, but an oath of loyalty to a single man – the Donald by the grace of God. And anyone, like Jim Himes, who dares to name that truth is promptly declared an enemy of the people – pardon, "part of the conspiracy."

Obama remains silent. As always. Perhaps because he knows that history will ultimately judge differently. Perhaps also because he understands that a president who never ruled with foam at the mouth, but with sharp intellect and quiet humor, cannot counter the pathological spectacle of the present with anything but dignity.
