But they also see a speed trap, a traffic jam two miles ahead, a construction site. The tent is one piece of information among many. Lukas believes it is the only one. That is the mistake of a man who studied mathematics but never learned that people are not variables.

He thinks: presence is attention. The AfD is where the people are. And because the people are on the B 27, the AfD is now there too, under the tent, with Lukas waving like someone who does not grasp that visibility is not the same as relevance. 10,000 cars divided by 1 tent does not equal: district won. It equals: a man who hopes.
