In the United States, where laws are often written faster than they are understood, the Trump regime has found itself a new target: Wikipedia — that vast, shimmering encyclopedia of the world, built by hundreds of thousands of hands, as open as a library without doors.
On April 24, 2025, Ed Martin, the acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia and a hand-picked confidant of Trump, sent an official letter to the Wikimedia Foundation.
The accusation: that Wikipedia enables foreign actors to manipulate information and spread propaganda.
The threat: that if this is confirmed, the foundation could lose its tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. tax code.
One might almost imagine that the President had stumbled upon his own biography and been terrified. Because in truth, it is not a concern for objective information that drives the Trump regime — it is fear of the truth itself, spreading in a thousand ways, relentless and silent, like water seeping through every wall.
Martin now demands detailed insight into Wikipedia’s editorial processes — demands disclosure, demands transparency — from a platform that has always operated openly.
Wikipedia is maintained by around 260,000 volunteers worldwide, by people whose only loyalty is to the idea of knowledge itself, not to any political party. The Wikimedia Foundation firmly rejected the accusations, reminding the public that its entire moderation process has always been open and fully transparent.
Yet in this new America, facts struggle to survive. Critics see Martin’s move as yet another front in the broader assault led by the Trump administration under the banner of the fascist Project 2025 — that dark plan through which Trump and his allies seek to remake America’s institutions. Where once diversity and pluralism thrived, they now seek to install uniformity and blind obedience. Where once stood an open society, they aim to build walls — out of distrust, fear, and lies.
But in doing so, Trump summons ghosts that will bring him little joy. The internet he seeks to control is no subject, no servant. It obeys no agenda, no censor. And the tighter the hand that tries to grasp it, the faster it slips away.
