A deep rift is cutting through the heart of the MAGA movement. As President Donald Trump intensifies pressure on Iran, publicly calling for Tehran’s “unconditional surrender” and considering direct U.S. support for Israel, resistance is suddenly forming – from within his own ranks. Those who once treated his “America First” doctrine like gospel are now loudly warning of a betrayal of the movement’s core principles: no new foreign wars, no nation building, no blood sacrifices for geopolitical fantasies. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Tucker Carlson, and Charlie Kirk – each a magnet for millions of conservative followers – are openly breaking with the president they fervently supported in 2024. “No issue currently divides the right as much as foreign policy,” Kirk wrote on X. “I’m very concerned that this split could destroy our momentum – and with it, our insanely successful presidency.”
Tensions escalated when Trump abruptly left the G7 summit in Canada, called for the immediate evacuation of Tehran, and hastily convened his national security team. Speculation about U.S. military support for Israel, including bunker-busting bombs, ignited the fury of isolationists. Steve Bannon warned that entering a war would “not just blow up the coalition – it would also torpedo the central project – deportations.” While Senator Lindsey Graham publicly called for the U.S. to fly and deliver with Israel, other longtime allies rebelled. Carlson said on the “War Room” podcast, “You’re not going to convince me that the Iranians are my enemies. It’s Orwell. I’m a free man.” Trump fired back: “Somebody please explain to kooky Tucker Carlson that IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”
Marjorie Taylor Greene demonstratively aligned herself with Carlson. “No war. No regime change. No ‘America Last,’” she wrote on X. “That’s not kooky. That’s what millions voted for.” Charlie Kirk also warned, “Trump was the first president in my lifetime who didn’t start a new war. That was a promise.” The conflict with Iran, Kirk said, is a line the base won’t cross. Already in the spring, Trump’s tariff policy had caused the first cracks, as did his hesitant stance on Ukraine aid. But now, as the world teeters on the edge of a new Middle East war, the MAGA base is asking one question – will Trump stay true to his course, or tear down the very foundation he built?
