Halftime with a Halo - When the Culture War Fails on Licensing Law

byRainer Hofmann

February 9, 2026

Two hours before kickoff of the grand cultural counteroffensive: silence. The spectacle announced as a patriotic alternative to the Super Bowl halftime show had to capitulate at the last minute - not to left wing demonstrators, not to censorship, not to “woke” activists. But to licensing rights. Turning Point USA, the organization that for years has portrayed itself as a bulwark against anything that does not blink in red, white, and blue, announced dryly: the show could not be streamed on Elon Musk’s platform X. Licensing restrictions. Of all things, copyright law set limits on the revolution.

LOL
It needs no words

Instead, the whole thing streamed exclusively on its own YouTube channel - on a platform that, in MAGA narratives, is otherwise gladly portrayed as a hub of speech suppression. The counterculture retreats into Silicon Valley exile. The parallel event was led by Kid Rock, the reliable recurring fixture of every Trump staging. RNC stage, tour poster, patriotic side front - wherever a guitar scrapes and a star spangled banner waves, he is not far away. Supported by Lee Brice, Brantley Gilbert, and Gabby Barrett, he was to proclaim a cultural state of emergency while Bad Bunny performs in the stadium.

The trigger for this patriotic replacement halftime: Puerto Rico’s superstar Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, speaks Spanish. Occasionally wears dresses. And at the Grammys he said: “Before I thank God, I’m going to say this: ICE out. We are not savages. We are not animals. We are not aliens. We are human. And we are American.” That was enough to justify a counterevent that now collapses over technical fine print. The ironic twist: while Bad Bunny performed in the stadium before a crowd of millions - last year 133.5 million people in America watched the halftime show - the counterstage was still wrestling with streaming rights. From the office of the Governor of California came the fitting response: “Not even Elon wants to listen to Kid Rock.” A line that carries more force than any program analysis.

This is what the great cultural reconquest looks like: announced as a patriotic uprising, cut in half shortly before the start, relocated to its own living room stream. The boycott show almost boycotts itself. The Super Bowl took place. Bad Bunny performed, together also with Lady Gaga. And somewhere in parallel Kid Rock sings against the modern world - now exclusively on YouTube. Sometimes the toughest opponent is not the other side, but reality.

Dear readers,
We do not report from a distance, but on the ground. Where decisions impact people and history is made. We document what would otherwise disappear and give those affected a voice.
Our work does not end with writing. We provide concrete help to people and advocate for the enforcement of human rights and international law – against abuses of power and right wing populist politics. We do not look away, because looking away always benefits the wrong side.
