Active Truth Maintenance – A Short Guide from the White House

No one was responsible. And yet everyone was. Donald Trump explains that he did not call Jeff Landry – Landry called him. Very proactive, in fact. Minutes later, Landry explains that the president called him. This is not a lie, this is modern Trump politics: Two versions of the same reality, both official, both true, as long as you do not listen.

Oh really. Uh-huh. Sure. Right?

In this new diplomacy, it is always the other one who called first. Responsibility is passed around like a hot potato chip until no one is holding it anymore. Landry is therefore traveling to Greenland not because he was sent, but because he happened to be holding the phone at the right moment. Or because the phone was holding him. Unclear. What matters is this: No one wanted it, but someone is doing it now.

Greenland itself appears in this story only on the sidelines, as a geographic misunderstanding with ice. A place you do not need to know in order to want to own it. People are not talking about history, self-determination, or international law, but about “the possibility” of becoming part of the United States – like a special offer one may politely decline, as long as one is not asked.

In the end, what remains is a perfect political choreography: A president who initiates nothing, a governor who refuses nothing, and a mission that has appointed itself. No one called. Everyone was involved. And the truth? It is very proactive. In Germany, one would say: AfD-like

Dear readers,
We do not report from a distance, but on the ground. Where decisions impact people and history is made. We document what would otherwise disappear and give those affected a voice.
Our work does not end with writing. We provide direct assistance and actively work to uphold human rights and international law – against abuse of power and right-wing populist politics.
Your support makes this work possible.
