Melania Trump as the cover star of a fashion magazine - for parts of the Vanity Fair staff this apparently sounds like the end of the Western world. “I am walking out that damn door,” threatened an editor, as if his boss had not suggested a First Lady but the wife of a dictator in a sequined suit. One has to wonder how a newsroom that for decades welcomed every celebrity - from oligarchs to reality TV disasters - suddenly discovered moral purity. Michelle Obama was allowed on the cover multiple times, Melania on the other hand remained taboo. Not because she was less glamorous, but because she embodied the wrong “narrative.” Yet Melania had already once been on the cover - in the Mexican edition in 2017. Apparently the scandal back then was not that she graced the cover, but that it happened in the wrong time zone.
Guiducci, the new editor in chief, probably wanted to bring a fresh breeze into the magazine and landed right in the middle of a storm of outrage. Instead of soberly discussing reader interests or circulation, revolutionary battle cries echoed through the newsroom: “We will not normalize this despot!” Pathos like from a strike leaflet, only here it was not about working conditions but about the question of who is allowed to be printed on 200 grams of glossy paper.
Melania herself has long since defused the drama: “It would not change anyone’s life if I were on the cover.” You can hardly expose the hysteria more aptly. Perhaps the insurgents should already prepare applications for Trader Joe’s - you never know when the next fashionable crisis of conscience will strike.

Vielleicht nicht die eines Diktators, aber das wirft kein bessere Licht auf sie.
Egal wen oder was Vanity Fair In der Vergangenheit auf dem Cover abgebildet hat, ich finde es gut, dass hier Melania abgelehnt wird.
Eine heuchlerische Frau von A-Z.
An ihr ist nichts glamurös.
Sie hatte kaum Erfolg als Model, aber dafür in fragwürdiger Gesellschaft.
Sie hat selber nichts erreicht, außer Trump zu ehelichen.
Dafür lebt sie mit ihren ganzen Bediensteten von Koch, Personal Trainer, Masseur und Schönheitschirurgen ein gutes Leben.
Sie schreibt einen Brief an Putin, wegen der „ach so armen Kinder“ (keine Frage das Leid ist unendlich)
Während ihr Mann Kindern im eigenen Land Foodstamps, Medicaid und Bildung streicht. Viele werden durch diese Politik mit ihren Eltern obdachlos werden.
Dazu die Kinder von (legalen) Migranten, die von ihren Eltern getrennt werden und in unwürdigen Unterkünften zusammen gepfercht werden.
Den Brief von Emine Erdogan zum Leid der Kinder in Ghaza erwähnt Sie nicht einmal.
Nein, diese Frau gehört nicht auf ein Cover.
Letztlich geht es vermutlich nicht einmal um Melania.
Es geht wahrscheinlich um Trump.
Ein neuer Schauplatz zur Ablenkung.
„Seiner unglaublich bildhübschen Frau wird das Cover verwehrt. Das ist ein Kreuzzug der Demokraten….. schließlich war Michelle Obama mehrfach auf dem Cover und die ist nicht hübsch“
So oder so ähnlich wird Trump reagieren.
Vielleicht auch gleich mit Klage drohen.
Zu sagen Vanity Fair ist nicht politisch, ist in den heutigen Zeiten genau so unsinnig zu sagen, dass Fußball, Olympia, Tennis oder ähnliches nicht politisch sind.
