Who will lead the government afterward is still uncertain. When it comes to the first name, however, there's a remarkable degree of certainty. Either Christopher Luxon or Chris Hipkins will be the next prime minister. One has governed since 2023 for the center-right National Party, while the other previously led the center-left Labour Party. Both are fighting for power, and according to recent polls, both are having considerable trouble winning over voters. It's an election between two men who share the same name and whose political promises have long since stopped generating the enthusiasm their parties had hoped for.

The fact that two Christophers happen to be running against each other has its own history. For decades, Christopher was an extraordinarily popular name in New Zealand. In 1968, nearly 800 newborn boys were given that name. Luxon was born in 1970, when more than 600 children were named Christopher. Hipkins was born in 1978 and was one of more than 400 boys given the name that year. These days, that enthusiasm has disappeared. In 2025, just 20 sets of parents chose Christopher. So these politicians carry a name from a time when their country apparently had somewhat different tastes.

Politically, what they have in common is considerably less entertaining. Luxon promises an economic recovery and points to international trade agreements. Hipkins wants to tackle the high cost of living and put more money into public healthcare. Neither offer is particularly convincing to many New Zealanders. The economic recovery remains sluggish, while unemployment and living costs stay high. Smaller parties are gaining ground as National and Labour struggle to win people's trust. Who ultimately governs will therefore likely also depend on potential coalition partners.

New Zealanders, then, have a real political decision to make. Only the name of their possible next prime minister holds no surprises. Christopher Luxon wants to stay, Chris Hipkins wants to return. After the election, we'll see which of the two the country is willing to trust with its future once again.

New Zealand Prime Minister Luxon Fights for His Job: A Million-Dollar Fortune, a Weak Economy, and Rebellions Within His Own Party

Christopher Luxon, left

Christopher Luxon wanted to govern New Zealand using the experience he'd gained as a successful business executive. Before entering politics, he ran the country's national airline, Air New Zealand, and previously worked for consumer goods company Unilever in the United States and Canada. He entered parliament for the first time in 2020. By 2023, he was prime minister. Now 56, he promised economic growth, stronger international trade relationships, and a government that would make decisions with the determination of a business. Three years later, he has to explain why the economic recovery is still taking so long.

Luxon points to the free trade agreement with India, rising exports, and education reforms. He also counts tougher action against criminal gangs among his achievements. But ordinary people have seen little benefit from those accomplishments in their everyday lives. Living costs remain high, and unemployment continues to weigh on the country. To his political opponents, the millionaire prime minister is a man whose wealth has left him disconnected from the struggles of ordinary families. His business experience, once the strongest argument for his candidacy, has done little to dispel those doubts.

At times, even his own party lost confidence in him. In 2026, Luxon had to survive two leadership confidence votes. He called one of them himself after speculation about his possible removal intensified. The second followed a challenge from within his own cabinet. Defense Minister Chris Penk wanted to take over the party leadership. Luxon responded by firing him from the government. Penk announced that he would leave politics after the election. Transport Minister Chris Bishop is already being discussed as a possible future successor. For a sitting prime minister, these kinds of personnel battles just months before a parliamentary election are hardly flattering.

Luxon is also reluctant to discuss his Christian faith in New Zealand's strongly secular society. The father of two knows the political reservations people have about deeply held religious beliefs. On Saturday, voters will decide whether his party can form another government. His economic promises, meanwhile, are still hanging in the air. Another internal party leadership vote can hardly answer the question of whether he'll ever deliver on them.

Chris Hipkins Wants Back in Power: A Former Prime Minister, Sausage Rolls, and a Past That Won't Leave Him Alone

Chris Hipkins already knows what it's like to be New Zealand's prime minister. In January 2023, he took over the government after Jacinda Ardern resigned, exhausted after more than five years in office. Nine months later, his Labour Party lost the general election to Christopher Luxon. Hipkins remained opposition leader and is now trying to reverse that defeat. The 48-year-old promises lower living costs and better funding for public healthcare. But his political past follows him with a persistence that hasn't faded much, even three years after he left office.

Hipkins began his political career as president of the student association at his university. He studied political science and entered New Zealand's parliament in 2008 at the age of 30. Under Ardern, he served as education minister, health minister, and took responsibility for major parts of the government's pandemic response. New Zealand's strict coronavirus measures earned international praise for their public health results. The economic consequences, particularly in Auckland, however, generated considerable resentment. For his political opponents, Hipkins remains closely associated with that period to this day.

His personal style is strikingly different from that of his conservative rival. While Luxon points to his career as a business executive, Hipkins presents himself as an ordinary guy who understands the concerns of his fellow New Zealanders. After Ardern resigned, he appeared before reporters wearing a hoodie, a baseball cap, and sunglasses. The pictures quickly spread across the internet. His love of sausage rolls is now so well known that foreign government officials have served them to him during official visits. Even a verbal slip from the pandemic years still follows him: Instead of explaining that people could get outside and stretch their legs, he accidentally used the English expression "spread their legs," which went viral.

The father of two now wants a second term as prime minister. His party is campaigning on higher spending for hospitals and relief for families whose incomes are being squeezed harder and harder by high prices. Yet Labour has also struggled to turn dissatisfaction with Luxon's government into a decisive political advantage. Hipkins therefore has two questions to answer: Why should New Zealand give him another chance, and why should his party govern more successfully this time than it did before its defeat in 2023?

Trump Declares His Golden Oval Office a National Monument: After Losing the Election, At Least He Wants to Keep the Decor

Donald Trump has lost the congressional elections, Democrats are taking control of both chambers, and the American president is worrying about his golden walls. On November 5, 2026, he signed an order declaring the Oval Office and Cabinet Room a national monument. Nobody should be allowed to destroy these rooms, tear them down, or replace them with something shaped differently. Especially not "stupid people," as Trump explicitly put it. The very president who had the White House's historic East Wing demolished to satisfy his personal taste and make room for an enormous ballroom is suddenly worried about preserving the building. When someone else wants to renovate, he suddenly discovers historic preservation. When he's the one doing it, apparently all that matters is his conviction that it'll look nicer afterward.

Trump spent the past few days on a remarkable assortment of presidential activities. On Monday, he inspected the Reflecting Pool at the Lincoln Memorial and raved about its renovation. On Wednesday, he signed the final steel beam for his ballroom while his party was still trying to come to terms with its election defeat. On Thursday, he declared his own office a protected national monument. The walls are now covered with numerous gold-framed portraits and gilded decorations, while new chandeliers sparkle in the Cabinet Room. The old lighting had been very bad, Trump declared. A red baseball cap bearing the word "VETO" sat on his desk during the signing. After losing both chambers of Congress, that word will probably play a bigger role in his political future than whether his chandeliers shine brightly enough.

The legal part is especially amusing. Trump claimed future presidents would have to ask Congress before turning the oval-shaped office into a square room, for example. His own order, however, contains no such requirement whatsoever. It explicitly allows the president to redecorate the rooms and replace the furniture. Even more substantial alterations remain possible under certain conditions. A successor could revoke the entire designation. Trump himself has already stripped national monuments of protections granted by earlier presidents. Now he apparently wants to prevent someone from doing something similar to his interior decorating. What he has declared beautiful is supposed to be preserved for future generations. Whether those future generations share his taste for golden wall ornaments is their business.

If anyone ever starts tearing down walls anyway, Trump demanded that someone call him. Wherever he might be at the time, he would come back and stop it. So the man who had the East Wing demolished is promising to personally intervene against the demolition of other walls. The Constitution, however, still allows his successors to rearrange the furniture. At least that's one thing that hasn't been gold-plated yet.

$330 Million for Trump's Ballroom: Democrats Want to Know Who's Paying for This Luxury and What They're Getting in Return

Donald Trump signs steel beams, has chandeliers installed, and covers the White House in golden decorations. Senator Richard Blumenthal, meanwhile, is interested in something considerably less shiny: the money. On November 5, 2026, the Democrat sent new letters to known donors to Trump's ballroom project. The companies are being asked to disclose what payments they've made and what contacts they've had with the administration. Anyone who refuses to provide information voluntarily could face further action, he warned. After the Republicans' defeat in the congressional elections, those warnings carry a different kind of weight. Democrats will control both chambers starting in January. Trump's beloved construction project could turn into an investigation in which the questions can no longer be answered with a pretty picture.

The planned ballroom is expected to cost around $330 million. According to the White House, it's being financed by private donors. Among them are major corporations with substantial business interests involving the government. That's exactly where Blumenthal's investigation begins. Did corporations pay for Trump's construction project while simultaneously hoping for favorable political decisions, government contracts, or regulatory relief? Were benefits promised? What conversations took place? There is no proof so far that any improper benefits were actually agreed upon. But the idea that companies would finance a ballroom for the president without expecting anything in return certainly deserves a thorough investigation. Especially when that same president makes decisions about multibillion-dollar contracts and the economic futures of those companies.

Trump had the historic East Wing of the White House demolished to make room for his new ballroom. Several of his construction projects are already facing lawsuits over possible violations of approval requirements. Yet on Wednesday, he stood before reporters and ceremoniously signed a steel beam. Just one day earlier, Republicans had lost their majorities in Congress. Thursday brought the designation of his gold-covered Oval Office as a national monument. While Trump tries to secure his architectural legacy for the future, Democrats are preparing investigations into the present. The names of the donors may turn out to matter considerably more than the names of the architects.

Blumenthal is demanding documents, and Congress could soon have considerably more power to compel their production. Trump's private donors must now reckon with the possibility that their relationships with the White House will come under public investigation. The president has repeatedly portrayed his ballroom as a gift to America. Now we may find out just how expensive that gift really was for its donors and whether they expected something in return. American taxpayers certainly have a right to know what interests lie behind those millions. Golden chandeliers, after all, don't make a money transfer invisible.

Democrats Win Congress, Stock Markets Crash: Wall Street Fears New Rules for Artificial Intelligence

In the United States, the technology-heavy Nasdaq had already suffered its worst trading day since the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday. By Friday morning, there were at least signs of a slight recovery. Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.9 percent, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.1 percent. Japan's stock market, meanwhile, was approaching what's known as a bear market, when prices fall at least 20 percent below their recent highs. Over the past several years, enormous amounts of money have poured into massive data centers, new AI systems, and the infrastructure needed to run them. Now investors fear that the new Congress could impose legal limits on that expansion. Just how costly a Democratic majority will actually be for tech corporations remains entirely uncertain. On Wall Street, the mere possibility of regulation is already enough to wipe out billions in market value.

Major hedge funds have also suffered substantial losses. The VARA fund lost 33 percent of its value in October, Tiger Global fell 8.5 percent, and Whale Rock's flagship fund lost around 8 percent. The latter, however, is still up approximately 34 percent since the beginning of the year. The heavy losses at individual funds show just how sensitive highly valued investments have become to changing expectations. While financial markets panic over possible restrictions on artificial intelligence, the actual laws they're so afraid of remain, for now, a matter of future political decisions. The losses, on the other hand, are already on the books.

Adding to the pressure are rising energy costs caused by tensions in the Middle East. A barrel of Brent crude oil now costs around $100. The Bank of England raised its key interest rate to 4 percent on Thursday. Its governor, Andrew Bailey, warned that another increase might be necessary if energy prices returned to their recent highs. He considers an acceleration in inflation almost inevitable, even if tensions in the Middle East ease quickly. For consumers, that could mean higher prices and more expensive loans yet again. Financial markets, meanwhile, are afraid of new regulations for a technology whose economic potential they've spent years financing with tremendous enthusiasm and equally tremendous sums of money.

Support Kaizen

Investigative Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
