The state hadn't reported a measles death in more than 30 years. On Monday, November 2, 2026, health officials confirmed the child's death. The child's age remains unknown, as does their vaccination status. The family's privacy is being protected. While they mourn their child, America is facing a disease the country declared eliminated 26 years ago. Apparently, even medical progress doesn't come with a lifetime guarantee.

The New York State and Lewis County health departments issued a joint statement. They said they were deeply saddened and extended their condolences to the family. No further details would be released in order to protect the family, according to Marissa Crary, a spokesperson for the state health department. Behind that official statement is a child whose life is over. We don't know how old the child was. The circumstances of that death belong, for now, to the people who have lost someone they loved.

The warning signs had been there for a long time. Back in October, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul declared a disaster emergency over the growing number of measles cases. Rural areas were hit particularly hard, and infections were spreading in neighboring states as well. By October 24, New York had recorded 178 cases, including eight in New York City. Now there's a death alongside those numbers. The statistics have acquired a face, one that officials have good reason to keep out of the public eye.

Across the country, the United States is now recording its highest number of measles cases since 1991. Last year's record has already been surpassed, even though 2026 isn't over yet. A disease officially declared eliminated in 2000 is spreading again. Back then, that designation meant continuous domestic transmission had been interrupted. The virus itself never disappeared from the world. All it needed was enough people without adequate immunity to make a comeback.

Pennsylvania has been hit particularly hard. In late August, state health officials reported the first measles-related deaths of the year in the United States. Pennsylvania has now recorded five deaths associated with the disease. As of Monday, 1,433 infections had been confirmed there. Behind every number are medical examinations and the possibility of serious health consequences. The political fight over the outbreak has long since reached Washington. Pennsylvania's Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro accuses Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of creating uncertainty through his public stance on vaccines and thereby contributing to the spread of this highly contagious disease. Kennedy, who founded an influential anti-vaccine organization, fires back. He accuses Shapiro of exploiting the health crisis for his own political ambitions. The governor is considered a potential presidential candidate. And so a preventable infectious disease becomes a fight over political motives while hospitals continue treating their patients.

Even more disturbing is the way the death toll is being handled. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC, has so far listed just three measles deaths nationwide in 2026, even though Pennsylvania alone has already confirmed five. The death of the child in New York adds another case. According to the CDC, the agency is working with state epidemiologists to establish a consistent definition for recording such deaths. When a national statistic shows fewer deaths than a single state has already reported, somebody owes the public an explanation. Following the first deaths in Pennsylvania, CDC Director Erica Schwartz decided not to include them in the agency's weekly report for the time being. That departed from previous practice, under which findings by state health authorities were taken into account. Why that decision was made matters enormously when evaluating the national numbers. A death doesn't simply disappear because a table temporarily leaves it out.

The medical facts are considerably less complicated. Two doses of the combined measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine provide about 97 percent protection against measles. Falling vaccination rates are leaving growing numbers of children and adults without protection. Measles is among the most contagious infectious diseases in existence. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left a room. You don't even have to meet the person who is sick to become infected.

America spent decades pushing measles back. Today, politicians are once again arguing about how many people have died from it and which number should be made public. In Lewis County, nobody is likely to feel much like discussing that. A child is missing from a family's life.

Invisible Text Message Can Cripple Android Phones: Even Emergency Calls Can Be Cut Off, Complete Data Loss Possible

A single text message can be enough to knock an Android phone out of commission. The owner never sees it, hears no notification sound, and doesn't have to click a link. While the phone appears to be working perfectly normally, the attack may already be underway in the background. Security researcher Mark Blaszczyk has discovered a dangerous vulnerability affecting Android versions 12 through 17. Under the name "SMS of Death," he demonstrated how a manipulated message can crash the phone's cellular service. Even emergency calls already in progress can be disconnected. What makes the attack especially disturbing is that it's completely invisible. Nothing appears in the message inbox, and the sender's phone number remains hidden. The device can lose its most important function without its owner having any idea why.

The attack exploits an older transmission technology called WAP Push, which mobile carriers use, among other things, to send settings to phones. The specially crafted message contains malformed data that can cause Android to crash when it processes the information automatically. Each individual attack interrupts the cellular connection for about 1 to 2 seconds. If the messages are sent repeatedly, the problem can become considerably worse. In some cases, mobile carriers attempt to redeliver a message that hasn't been acknowledged, triggering the crash all over again. In one test, a single message caused recurring outages for up to a week. According to the researcher, around 20 such messages can leave a vulnerable device unusable for an extended period. Things become especially dangerous if the malformed message remains stored on the phone and gets processed again every time the device restarts. The smartphone then becomes trapped in an endless reboot loop. Eventually, a factory reset may be necessary, potentially wiping out all locally stored data.

The vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-58882. Google has released a security fix for Android 14 through 17, included in its November 2026 security bulletin. When that fix actually reaches a smartphone, however, depends on the manufacturer. Owners of older devices running Android 12 or 13 may no longer receive the necessary update. The researcher has also described a technical method that can, under certain circumstances, restore affected devices without requiring a complete reset. For ordinary users, though, that procedure is hardly practical. The most obvious protection is therefore to install available security updates immediately and regularly back up important data. A phone that can fail without any visible warning becomes particularly dangerous when someone desperately needs to call for help.

Kaizen Files: America 2026 - Pregnant U.S. Citizen Stopped on Her Way to Vote, Held by ICE for a Week

A pregnant American woman is driving to vote with her husband. They're headed to a polling place in Key Largo, Florida. But before the couple can cast their ballots, both are stopped by U.S. Border Patrol agents. What starts as an ordinary trip to vote ends with a week in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody. The woman is an American citizen. She's detained anyway. Their young child is separated from both parents during that time. In a country whose president never stops talking about keeping Americans safe, a pregnant citizen finds out just how quickly that sense of security can disappear.

The stop near the polling place has been described as unlawful in the account available to us. The officers have yet to explain what justification they had for their actions. There are also no further details explaining why the American citizen and her husband had to spend approximately a week in ICE custody. What is clear is that a family was torn apart while the parents were detained.

The location of the stop makes the incident especially serious. The couple was on their way to vote, the very process through which American citizens decide who governs their country. Instead, an immigration stop landed them in custody. The available records don't establish whether the officers knew the woman was an American citizen. For the child left behind, that distinction made no difference. Both parents were gone. A democracy can make all the solemn promises it wants about protecting its citizens' right to vote. But when a pregnant American woman is detained on her way to the polls, one very specific question demands an answer: How secure is that right on the road to the polling place?

Kaizen Files: America 2026 - Masked ICE Agents Pin Man to the Ground in Texas as He Begs to Be Released

The screams are loud enough to reach a neighbor inside her apartment. Her alleged crime: In February 2026, she supposedly photographed a facility belonging to the Russian Defense Ministry and passed the images to an employee of Moldova's counterintelligence service. That individual allegedly acted on behalf of Ukraine's Security Service, the SBU. Russian authorities claim the photographs could have helped Ukraine prepare acts of sabotage against the Russian military. No independent evidence supporting these accusations has been made public. The Russian justice system also cites Slanowskaja's opposition to Russia's war against Ukraine. Judge Vladimir Gorban confirmed her full name and date of birth when the verdict was announced. Her name had been concealed in the published court documents.

The case, filed under number 2-118/2026, reached the court on August 24, and the first hearing took place on September 14. Slanowskaja was born in Gorodishche, Moldova, and lived in Moscow. She worked as an economist for a company in the biomedical technology sector and later looked for a job as an accountant. Before Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, she traveled to Moldova and Ukraine, including several trips to Chisinau between 2014 and 2020. Whether she admitted the allegations in court is unknown. So is the date of her arrest. The specific evidence the court relied on to establish her alleged intelligence activities has not been made public. The 14-year sentence is certain, while essential questions about the proceedings remain unanswered.

The case comes at a time of serious tensions between Russia and Moldova. In June 2026, Moldovan counterintelligence arrested a suspected employee of Russia's FSB intelligence service. He had allegedly planned to gather information about the security zone along the Dniester River under the pretense of a tourist trip. Between 2017 and 2019, he had reportedly already been involved in intelligence activities in Moldova using a Russian diplomatic passport. In April, two Moldovan intelligence officers were released after Russia had held them since June 2025. In the prisoner exchange, Moscow received, among others, former Moldovan deputy intelligence chief Alexander Balan, who had been accused of passing classified documents to Belarus's KGB intelligence service. Nina Popova, the wife of a Russian serviceman in Transnistria, and museum employee Alexander Butyagin, who had previously been arrested in Poland, were also part of the exchange. Belarus released Polish journalist Andrzej Poczobut, who had been imprisoned since 2021. Natalia Slanowskaja, meanwhile, was sentenced Monday to 14 years in a penal colony. Russia has imposed a punishment on a retired woman that could deprive her of her freedom well into old age. The publicly known accusations revolve around photographs of a military facility and their alleged, unproven transfer to an intelligence service. No other evidence of the alleged sabotage plans has become known either, because there simply isn't any. The verdict has been delivered. For Natalia Slanowskaja, it's about the next 14 years of her life.

20,000 Ballots, Another Defeat: Supreme Court Blocks Trump's Attempt to Intervene in California's Election

Just hours before the congressional elections, the U.S. Supreme Court handed Donald Trump another defeat. His administration wanted to force California to set aside thousands of ballots that had already been cast. Around 20,000 registered voters were affected, people whose American citizenship Washington questioned. None of that had been proven. Yet the state was supposed to treat their ballots separately anyway. On Monday, the justices rejected the emergency request without even asking the other side to respond. No justice publicly dissented. The Court offered no detailed explanation. This is particularly bitter for Trump because the Supreme Court has been more than willing to side with his administration in other cases. This time, his attempt to interfere with the vote count immediately before the election failed. And it failed before a Court with a conservative majority.

California had already successfully fought the administration in several courts. The government justified its move by claiming that people without American citizenship might be voting illegally. The state countered that the data Washington had submitted contained numerous errors. Separating the ballots could have affected legally registered voters. More than 6 million Californians had already cast their ballots at that point. The state has around 23 million registered voters in total. Mail-in voting has been underway there since early October. California automatically mails a ballot to every registered voter. Right in the middle of that process, Washington wanted to effectively change the rules for thousands of people. The courts weren't having it.

Governor Gavin Newsom responded with the words: "Democracy won." Attorney General Rob Bonta pointed out that Trump's administration had already suffered four court defeats in this matter. The federal government had portrayed its demand as a limited precautionary measure. After verification, legally cast votes could still be counted, it argued. California election officials maintained that separating the affected ballots after the fact would be practically impossible. A federal judge had previously warned that such interference could throw the ongoing election into chaos. The existing court order blocking the administration's demands now remains in effect. On November 3, Americans decide the makeup of Congress. Just before that vote, Trump wanted to place 20,000 ballots under special scrutiny. The nation's highest court refused to give him the order he demanded.

Support Kaizen

Investigative Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
