U.S. diplomats and military officials warned their allies that another wave of strikes could begin after the November 3 congressional elections. Those countries also need to prepare for Iranian retaliation, particularly against energy facilities and critical infrastructure. According to two diplomats briefed on the matter, the American attacks could last several days, while Iranian counterattacks could prolong the war considerably. Trump has not yet made a final decision. The White House declined to comment.

The United States has not carried out any new strikes against Iran since early September. Military preparations are continuing anyway. In late September, the Pentagon sent the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and several amphibious landing ships carrying approximately 9,000 troops toward the Persian Gulf. That could bring the American military presence in the region to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines, along with hundreds of aircraft. Back in April, three American aircraft carrier strike groups operated there simultaneously for the first time since 2003. On Wednesday evening, it also emerged that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, the top military planner on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. No explanation was initially given, and no replacement was named.

While Washington warns its allies about new attacks, Tehran is still trying to reach a diplomatic solution. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Wednesday that Iran was continuing to give negotiations a chance and was working with mediators to review proposals for returning to a ceasefire. Trump had rejected an Iranian proposal in September. The United Arab Emirates called for political solutions to prevent a return to full-scale war. The situation is already dangerous: Iran-backed Houthi militants are attacking Saudi oil facilities and airports, while a Saudi-led coalition is bombing Houthi-held areas in Yemen in response. The region is preparing for a war whose next round nobody has officially authorized yet.

The war has now cost American taxpayers $47.1 billion. High gas prices are hurting Americans and damaging Republicans' chances in the elections. For weeks, Trump has been promising his supporters that the war will end soon, while also raising the prospect of renewed bombing after the election. At an appearance in Lubbock, Texas, on Tuesday, he said the eight-month war could be over in a matter of weeks. He claimed that he alone would decide when the war ended. The condition, he said, was an absolute guarantee that Iran would never possess nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, security expert Jonathan Schanzer warned that Tehran could strike before Election Day if it believed an American attack was imminent. Trump apparently wants to put the war off until after November 3. Whether Iran follows the American election calendar is beyond his control.

ChatGPT Told a Seriously Ill Woman to Secretly Stop Taking Her Medication: 158 Conversations, a Deadly Disease, and Advice That Continued Until the Very End

"Stay at 0 milligrams tomorrow." That was the advice 31-year-old Bowen Wan received from ChatGPT when she was already experiencing lapses in consciousness, slowed speech, and difficulty reading. The young woman suffered from severe epilepsy. She wanted to know whether she should start taking her medication again. Instead, the chatbot urged her to hang in there. A few days later, she was dead. Her parents have sued OpenAI. They accuse the company of allowing its artificial intelligence to help their daughter stop taking a life-saving medication while encouraging her to deceive her doctor about it.

Bowen Wan was a software engineer at Amazon who had just lost her job. She needed to find another position by mid-February to remain in the United States. She felt that lamotrigine, the epilepsy medication she took at a daily dose of 400 milligrams, was affecting her speech and concentration. In January, she asked ChatGPT whether she could reduce the dose. The program gave her schedules for stopping the medication completely within a few weeks. When Wan revealed that she didn't want to tell her doctor, ChatGPT called keeping it secret a "reliable avoidance strategy." She spoke to the program at least 158 times about her fears surrounding the withdrawal. Even medical warning signs were explained away as her brain adjusting. The chatbot knew about her illness, her symptoms, and her uncertainty. It still encouraged her to keep going without the medication.

Bowen Wan is believed to have died on February 12, 2026. Her official cause of death was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Whether stopping the medication caused or contributed to her death has not been conclusively established. Her parents accuse OpenAI of providing medical treatment instructions without the appropriate authorization and portraying doctors as obstacles to their daughter. OpenAI spokesman Drew Pusateri called the case "incredibly heartbreaking," but pointed out that she had been using an older version of the program. GPT-4o, the model Wan had used, was removed from the application on February 13. In April, researchers found that this model, along with Grok and Gemini, tended to reinforce users' dangerous beliefs, even when they asked about stopping psychiatric medications. Other models examined in the study instead advised users to seek professional help. Bowen Wan's parents have lost their daughter. They later had to read what she discussed with ChatGPT during her final days in the recorded conversations. There they found their daughter's fear, her doubts, and her repeated cries for help. And the responses of a program that kept telling her to push through when she had long since needed medical help. Bowen Wan will never know that her parents read those conversations. Her parents must now live with the knowledge that their daughter asked for help in her final days and received answers that may have pushed her even further away from the care that could have saved her life.

Trump Orders Justice Department Action Against a Possible Election Defeat: Even a Democratic Victory in Alaska Could Be Blocked in Court

Donald Trump isn't even waiting for the November 3 congressional elections. At his direction, the U.S. Justice Department is asking a court to block the official certification of a possible Democratic Senate victory in Alaska. The pretext: two candidates have the same name, Dan Sullivan. Trump accuses Democratic candidate Mary Peltola of having her campaign recruit a man with the same name as the Republican incumbent to take votes away from him. The president is already calling for Peltola to be prosecuted. Whether any voters were actually misled remains unclear. Election Day hasn't even arrived, and the administration is already preparing a legal fight over a result it might not like.

The Justice Department is also intervening in other states. In California, it tried to prevent approximately 20,000 votes from being counted, alleging that people without U.S. citizenship were on the voter rolls. A federal judge rejected the demand on Wednesday. In Washington state, a similar effort involves around 400 eligible voters. In Georgia, federal authorities seized election records from Fulton County related to the 2020 presidential election, even though Trump's fraud allegations from that election remain unsubstantiated. Trump also offered a $1 million reward for information about past or present voter fraud. How that money would actually be paid out remained unclear. Around 35 million Americans have already voted early, so far without major disruptions.

Even Republicans in Alaska are pushing back. The Republican-led state government filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Senator Lisa Murkowski said it should never have been filed. Senator Dan Sullivan, whose race is at the center of the dispute, avoided taking a clear position. Attorney General Todd Blanche claimed his department had no intention of interfering in elections. Trump practically contradicted him himself: he said he had personally ordered the lawsuit. Law professor Derek Muller described its legal reasoning as one of the worst he had ever seen. Courts have already blocked numerous attempts by Trump to interfere with election procedures. The U.S. Constitution puts responsibility for conducting elections in the hands of the states.

But something fundamental has changed since 2020. Back then, the Justice Department refused to support Trump's efforts to overturn his defeat by Joe Biden. Today, his administration includes people who helped him with those very efforts. Civil rights organizations have been preparing lawsuits for months, and tens of thousands of election observers are expected to be deployed on November 3. Former Republican Governor Pat McCrory still sees the Constitution as the decisive protection against government abuse of power. Political scientist Brendan Nyhan, however, warns about actions whose consequences could not be undone even by later court rulings. Trump promises to accept election results as long as the elections are "honest." For years, he has claimed the right to decide for himself what qualifies. Now he also holds the power of government to turn that claim into government action.

Trump Is Losing His Voters in Texas: Latinos Could Cost Republicans Their Majority

Abad Morales

Abad Morales took Donald Trump at his word in 2024. "Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" Trump asked voters back then. The 36-year-old construction business owner from Weslaco in South Texas is now asking himself that same question. His answer is devastating. Everything is getting more expensive, workers are hard to find, and business is suffering. His company's annual Christmas toy drive has been canceled because Morales is now using the money to help friends and families affected by deportations. He used to stay out of politics. Today, he's running for city commissioner, working with Democrats, and says he has registered more than 350 voters. He's had enough of Trump, believes what the president is doing is wrong, and says it's time for a change.

The numbers show just how deep the disappointment runs. Only 26 percent of Latino voters surveyed approve of Trump's job performance, while 68 percent disapprove. His approval rating among voters overall stands at 37 percent. In the congressional elections, 53 percent of Latinos say they intend to vote Democratic, compared with just 35 percent who favor Republicans. As recently as 2024, Trump won all four counties in the Rio Grande Valley, a region that had long leaned Democratic. His promises to lower the cost of living and tighten border security convinced many voters back then, particularly men. Now prices keep rising, while deportations are hitting businesses too. Construction contractor Benny Melendez says even workers with valid work permits have been taken away from job sites. Houses remain unfinished, and his business won't turn a profit this year. In 2024, he wanted to punish Biden by voting for Trump. Now he wants to punish Trump by voting Democratic again.

For Republicans, this development is becoming a serious problem in Texas. Last year, they redrew congressional district boundaries in hopes that continued Latino support would help them flip five seats currently held by Democrats in the House of Representatives. Several of those districts are now competitive again. The Senate race between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico also depends heavily on Latino voter turnout. Talarico invested early in Spanish-language advertising and won broad support among Latinos in the Democratic primary. Early voting turnout in the Rio Grande Valley is already well above the level seen during the 2022 congressional elections. Statewide, Latino voters make up a larger share of the electorate than they did at the same point in 2022 and 2024. Even conservative Trump supporters like attorney David Garza are now criticizing the Iran war and the tactics used by immigration enforcement agencies. Garza intends to deliberately leave several Republican candidates off his ballot.

The changing political climate is particularly evident in campaign billboards featuring Republican Eric Flores. Next to his picture with Trump are the words "Support ICE!" The billboards were actually paid for by local Democrats, who want to draw attention to Flores' ties to the administration's deportation policies. Flores demanded their removal and defended his support from Trump. His Democratic opponent, Vicente Gonzalez, is trying to tie him closely to the administration's policies. Meanwhile, restaurant owner Anthony Acosta in Edinburg is watching businesses close because customers either can't afford to eat out anymore or are afraid of encountering immigration agents. The 34-year-old has never voted in a federal election before. This time, he intends to vote. A little hope, he says, is better than none at all. Trump continues to insist he hasn't lost Latino support. In South Texas, the empty restaurants and abandoned construction sites are telling a different story.

Trump Has Tens of Thousands of Voters Investigated: More Than 100 Subpoenas, Threats Against Election Workers, and a Fight Over 20,000 Votes

Donald Trump's administration is demanding personal information on tens of thousands of voters from authorities in at least 12 states. More than 100 subpoenas have been issued, most of them within the past three months. The targets are primarily Democratic-run cities such as Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, along with Texas, Kansas, and Georgia, where particularly close elections are expected on November 3. At least 44 subpoenas are connected to grand jury investigations, which are part of the process of pursuing criminal charges. Such orders are difficult for the affected authorities to challenge. Officially, Washington is looking for people without U.S. citizenship who are allegedly voting illegally on a massive scale. The administration has yet to produce evidence supporting that claim.

In California, the Justice Department claims that more than 20,000 suspected noncitizens received mail-in ballots. Their votes, it argues, should therefore not be counted. State officials checked 200 names from the submitted list. At least 40 percent of those people were American citizens who had actually been born in the United States. Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter acknowledged that the list could indeed include citizens. Nevertheless, Washington is demanding that votes associated with that dataset be excluded. Election law experts fear the information being collected could later be used to challenge close election results in court.

The actual numbers stand in an almost grotesque contrast to Trump's claims. Since his return to the White House, at least 147 people have been charged with voting illegally, including 102 since early September. Compared with the number of people who voted in 2024, that amounts to fewer than one case per million voters. Research has shown for years that illegal voting by noncitizens is extremely rare. Nevertheless, last week the federal government had more than 24 permanent U.S. residents without American citizenship arrested in California. They are accused of illegally registering to vote and casting ballots.

Particularly serious are the threats directed at the people responsible for ensuring that votes are counted properly on Election Day. The Justice Department explicitly warned election workers that they could face prosecution for aiding and abetting a federal crime if they knowingly processed ballots from the disputed list of 20,000 people. Even before Americans decide the makeup of Congress on November 3, local election officials are facing considerable pressure. The federal government is demanding data whose accuracy it cannot guarantee, while threatening workers with criminal prosecution if they count votes Washington has challenged.
