In Minneapolis, a father is taken away by ICE during his green card appointment. His 18-month-old daughter is waiting for him because a crucial court notice was sent to an address the family had moved out of long ago. In another case, we all managed to get Milena released from detention.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in Prague, thousands are taking to the streets after the government took another step toward political control of public broadcasters in the middle of the night. War, government abuse of power, and attacks on press freedom. We look closely at exactly the places where so many people would rather stop asking critical questions and simply look the other way.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin's Fear Gets Concrete Foundations: More Than 50 Air Defense Positions Protect His Residence, While Moscow Has Barely Twice as Many<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A military wall of protection is growing around Vladimir Putin's residence on Lake Valdai, and its sheer scale now says more about the Kremlin's priorities than some of its speeches ever could. Another 16 air defense towers have been built within a 50-kilometer radius. That brings the total number of positions to more than 50. Moscow and its surrounding area, home to more than 20 million people, are protected by approximately 100 comparable positions. Fewer than 100,000 people live in the Valdai area. While Russia attacks Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles, its president's private retreat is getting an air defense system that is now roughly half the size of the one protecting the capital. For millions of Moscow residents, there are barely twice as many of these positions available as there are for the man who started the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new installations form an outer defensive ring south of the residence, facing Ukraine. Satellite images show how systematically Russian forces are sealing off the area. The ring runs through the Khotilovo military airfield, which Putin regularly uses. A specially built railroad line runs from there to his residence. Lisiy Island also lies within this militarily secured area. It houses a secret laboratory complex that may be connected to Russia's biological weapons program. Additional air defense towers were already erected around it in September. Pantsir or Tor systems are expected to be installed at the new positions. Whether all of them are already armed and operational cannot be determined from the satellite images. More installations could follow in the northern part of the defensive ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2025, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian drones had attempted to attack Putin's residence. The Kremlin leader personally raised the accusation with Donald Trump, called it an \"act of state terrorism,\" and threatened to reconsider his position on negotiations with Ukraine. Volodymyr Zelenskyy rejected the claim. Independent experts and U.S. foreign intelligence also doubted that such an attack had taken place. Zelenskyy saw the accusations as an attempt to obstruct peace talks. According to investigative reporting, Putin's longtime partner Alina Kabaeva also stays at Valdai with their 2 sons. While Russian families lose loved ones in the war and Ukrainian civilians live under bombardment, a military fortress is growing around this secluded family residence. The political pecking order can now be seen in satellite images. More than 50 positions for Valdai. Around 100 for Moscow. The warmonger is making damn sure his own roof is especially well protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin Wants to Negotiate Ukraine's Future With Trump and Xi - The Invaded Country Is Supposed to Stay Outside<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vladimir Putin continues bombing Ukraine while simultaneously preparing talks about its future, talks in which the Ukrainian government might not even be allowed to participate. Moscow wants to resume negotiations with Washington and Kyiv after November 4. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov announced this on October 25, 2026. No firm date has been set. Abu Dhabi is considered a possible location, with mid-November as the approximate timeframe. At the same time, Putin is having another meeting prepared, this time with Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The summit could take place on November 18 or 19 in Shenzhen, China. Ukraine's future would also be up for discussion, but without Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The Kremlin apparently wants to discuss the terms for ending the war with 2 other major powers, while the country whose cities Russia is destroying and whose people Russian soldiers are killing gets no seat at the table. Quite a remarkable idea of political authority: The aggressor picks his negotiating partners and treats the country he invaded like an annoying participant whose presence would only make the talks more difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 21, Putin received U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg. Witkoff brought proposals for a peace settlement that had been drawn up following consultations with Ukrainian and European representatives in Oslo. Ushakov made it clear that Moscow found little of value in them. Ukraine, by contrast, supported the American initiative and proposed a meeting between the heads of state to resolve questions that had remained unanswered. The Kremlin is now accusing Kyiv of preventing earlier agreements to resume negotiations from moving forward. Ushakov provided no evidence to support that accusation. Russia had originally wanted to resume talks after the State Duma elections held from September 18 to 20. Now the plan is to wait until Russia's national holiday on November 4. Moscow does not expect a quick peace agreement anyway, Ushakov indicated. The first round of talks would merely serve to sound each other out. Negotiations had already taken place twice in Abu Dhabi in January and February, followed by another round in Geneva. None of those meetings stopped the Russian attacks. Further talks scheduled for March were postponed after the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even more dangerous is the idea of a summit between Putin, Trump, and Xi. According to previous reports, Putin himself proposed discussing the conditions for ending the war in Ukraine at such a meeting. Zelenskyy would not be there. Trump expressed general openness to the idea but pointed primarily to nuclear disarmament as a possible topic. There is still no binding agenda, nor has the meeting itself been formally agreed upon. Zelenskyy made it unmistakably clear that Russia, the United States, and China were free to talk to one another, but decisions about Ukraine could only be made with Kyiv's participation. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha warned against giving Putin additional political opportunities through such a summit while his army continued waging war. Meanwhile, discussions between Putin and Witkoff had already included resuming economic cooperation, including Russian diesel fuel and fertilizers. While Ukrainian families bury their loved ones and Russian missiles strike residential buildings, business deals are being discussed with the country carrying out those attacks. Putin wants to talk about peace without acknowledging political responsibility for the war he started. He wants to negotiate with Trump and Xi over a country that does not belong to him. If Washington goes along with this, those responsible for Russian aggression and their most powerful foreign negotiating partners would be discussing what kind of future Ukraine is allowed to have. The country that was invaded would then be told what had been decided for it. For Putin, that would amount to a diplomatic elevation of his war of aggression. For Ukraine, Russian violence would be compounded by the political humiliation of having foreign presidents negotiate over its sovereignty while its citizens continue to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the Kaizen Files: He Came to Discuss His Green Card and Was Taken Away by ICE - How a Government Address Error Is Tearing Apart a Family in Minneapolis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

William Lizardo went to an appointment in downtown Minneapolis on Friday, October 23, 2026. The Canadian-born dentist wanted to obtain permanent residency in the United States. His wife, Lauren, had supported his application, and an attorney accompanied him. At the end of the interview, the officer handling his case stood up, left the room, and returned with 2 ICE agents. Lizardo was arrested. His wife learned what had happened from the attorney. Their 18-month-old daughter is waiting at home. Within minutes, an appointment that was supposed to secure this family's future turned into a separation that nobody knows how long will last. The reason is especially bitter: A court notice had reportedly been sent to an address where the family had not lived for more than 2 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple met while studying dentistry at the University of Minnesota and married shortly after graduation. In January 2026, Lizardo's first application for permanent residency was denied. He had not been allowed to work since then, so he volunteered at a dental clinic serving low-income patients in Burnsville. For their renewed application, the couple hired an attorney. David Whalen described Lizardo as one of the strongest applicants he had ever represented. Nevertheless, a deportation order had already been issued. A notice to appear before an immigration judge had been sent to Virginia in February. By then, the family had long since moved to Victoria, Minnesota. Because Lizardo did not appear in court, the order was issued. According to Lauren, the couple only learned about it when he was arrested. A government agency expects a man to appear in court even though another part of that same government apparently already knows his current address. Then it uses his failure to appear as grounds for deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lauren Lizardo describes how carefully they had both maintained their records. They checked the online immigration portal every day. Her husband had appeared before immigration officials in recent months to have his fingerprints taken. Other official letters reached the couple without any problems at their current address. Yet they heard nothing about a court date or a deportation order. Attorney Whalen holds the authorities responsible and announced that he would file an emergency motion for Lizardo's release. ICE had not responded to a request for information about the circumstances of the arrest by Friday evening. Lauren Lizardo wants a fair chance and to be treated with compassion and humanity. Instead, she now has to figure out when she will see her husband again. The American immigration system has enormous financial and personnel resources at its disposal. Yet in this case, according to the family's account, it apparently could not manage to send a crucial letter to the correct address. When it came to arresting him during an in-person government appointment, however, 2 agents were immediately available. The proceedings may be based on a deportation order. But that order does not answer the question of how someone is supposed to know about a court hearing when the notice was sent to a home he had moved out of long ago. An 18-month-old daughter is waiting for her father. The authorities already had him sitting right in front of them. They had him taken away. Every effort will be made in this case as well to get William out of detention as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A similar case in San Diego shows once again that, with determination and support, an arrest like this does not have to be the final word. Milena Araya-Davis, who has lived in the United States since childhood, was taken away by ICE after an interview about her residency status, and after 7 days, we were able to get Milena out of detention. She is now back with her family. And yet, our desks are unfortunately piled high with cases involving innocent people held in ICE detention facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At 4:36 in the Morning, an Attack on Press Freedom: Thousands of Czechs Stand Up Against the Government's Grab for the Media<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At 4:36 in the morning, the Czech government held a vote on the future of public broadcasting. An hour when most people are asleep and political decisions attract as little attention as possible. Parliamentary Speaker Tomio Okamura of the far-right SPD had limited debate after the bill was unexpectedly introduced on Friday outside the scheduled agenda. Lawmakers from the governing majority approved it in its first reading. Prime Minister Andrej Babi\u0161, a billionaire and head of a populist government, wants to abolish the current system of financing television and radio through broadcasting fees. In the future, the money would come directly from the state budget. What sounds like a technical change would give politicians considerably more influence over the financial survival of the broadcasters. The government could decide each year how much money the newsrooms that critically cover its activities would receive. Babi\u0161 calls it transparency. His critics see it as an attempt to make independent media financially dependent on the government. Pushing such a decision through parliament in the middle of the night hardly makes assurances of supposedly good intentions any more believable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, October 25, 2026, thousands of people filled Prague's historic Old Town Square. \"Resign!\" and \"We've had enough!\" they shouted at the government. The first protests had already broken out on Friday. Now the anger was directed explicitly at Babi\u0161 and Okamura. Nobody in the country believed their intentions were honest, protest organizer Mikul\u00e1\u0161 Min\u00e1\u0159 told them. This time, the government had gone much too far. The bill is now before the relevant parliamentary committees, with a final vote still to come. The planned changes could cut funding for the public broadcasters by around 15 percent as early as next year. Czech Television, the country's most-watched broadcaster across the major age groups, and Czech Radio, which together rank among the country's most trusted news sources, would become more financially dependent on the very politicians they report on. Babi\u0161 and his allies have repeatedly clashed with both public and private media. Now a dispute over news coverage has become a question of who gets to control the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition points to Hungary, where Viktor Orb\u00e1n spent years reshaping the media landscape in favor of his government. The comparison touches a particularly sensitive nerve: Anyone who can pressure newsrooms through budget decisions has no need to issue outright bans. The mere prospect of financial consequences can be enough. That is why 16 international media organizations and broadcasting representatives, including Reporters Without Borders, demanded more thorough parliamentary debate and the removal of any provisions that could threaten the broadcasters' financial foundations. President Petr Pavel also called for careful scrutiny. The Czech Republic, he said, was one of the few countries in Central and Eastern Europe where the relationship between public and private media worked well. Babi\u0161 could therefore damage something whose value even the country's president explicitly recognizes. More demonstrations have been announced. The people on Prague's Old Town Square understand what the government is trying to sell them as a funding reform. When the same politicians who get angry about critical reporting are allowed to decide how much money newsrooms receive, journalistic independence becomes a budget question. And the answer would then be determined by the very government those journalists are supposed to hold accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
