Yet a new audit report reveals serious security failures involving the military's own cell phones, of all things. Location data could tell foreign intelligence agencies where military facilities are located. Under certain circumstances, communication links within the department can also be traced. While Washington spends billions on military security, the people responsible have apparently failed to enforce even basic safeguards in their cell phone contracts. An adversary might not even need a spy or a satellite. Access to data that American wireless carriers already possess could be enough.

On Wednesday, October 14, the Department of Defense's independent Office of Inspector General released its audit report. The investigation examined wireless service contracts worth $2.67 billion. It found that the officials responsible had failed to adequately verify whether the companies under contract were effectively protecting sensitive communications data. That includes information about people's locations and who is communicating with whom. Such details may seem insignificant at first. Taken together, however, they can reveal movements whose secrecy is vital to military operations.

The auditors described the potential consequences with unusual clarity. Attackers could map entire communication networks within the department, locate secret safe houses or command posts, and identify vulnerabilities in military operations. That could seriously compromise national security. A single phone number reveals little on its own. Many interconnected phone numbers already tell a story. Anyone who can read that story might discover where soldiers are stationed and where orders are being issued from. For an enemy intelligence agency, that would be valuable access.

What makes matters particularly serious is that the officials responsible had failed to adequately review the wireless carriers' security assessments before renewing contracts. With contracts of this size, regular oversight would seem obvious. Instead, according to the watchdog's findings, it remained unclear whether the required security measures had actually been implemented. The American government was paying for its communications services without adequately protecting the information generated in the process. Apparently, a billion-dollar contract is still no substitute for a thorough review.

Then there is the problem of text messages. The officials responsible were aware of security vulnerabilities involving messages sent to or received by military cell phones. They also knew that unauthorized parties could potentially intercept them. Nevertheless, according to the auditors, the department had failed to issue adequate policies to protect those messages. Knowing about the danger had therefore produced no necessary, binding response. In an institution that demands strict compliance with countless security regulations from its own personnel, that failure is particularly difficult to explain.

Another weakness emerged in the way the department handled the findings. According to the oversight office, officials within the department argued over which office was responsible for fixing the problems. At the same time, adequate explanations of how the recommendations would be implemented were missing. The auditors outlined 3 specific measures, including an assessment of the protection required for stored communications records and binding agreements with wireless carriers. Security reviews before future contract renewals are also supposed to be improved.

Democratic Senator Ron Wyden responded with sharp criticism. He remained concerned that American service members were being put at risk by insecure military communications. He expected further findings from the Inspector General and would continue overseeing the department to make sure the recommendations were finally implemented. His concern involves a danger whose potential consequences extend far beyond lost data. Knowing the location of a military position can mean the difference between life and death.

Hegseth himself bears political responsibility for this. The report, however, does not establish that he personally disclosed location data or that foreign intelligence agencies have already successfully exploited the vulnerabilities described. What it documents are serious failures within the department he leads. While Hegseth makes public appearances at military demonstrations and in workout videos, the department is also occupied with removing transgender service members. Discussions about his interest in testosterone have attracted attention as well. The unresolved security problems, meanwhile, directly affect the protection of the armed forces. That is precisely where military leadership should be directing its attention.

Musk's Million-Dollar Promise: Supposedly Random at First, Now a Settlement in Court

Before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Elon Musk promised $1 million a day to a supposedly randomly selected supporter of a political petition. The stunt made headlines and brought his organization, America PAC, the personal information of numerous voters. Now Musk and his political action committee have reached a settlement in 2 class-action lawsuits. The plaintiffs accused them of deceiving people with the promise of a random chance to win $1 million. How much the settlement will cost remains unknown. The published court documents contain no financial details.

The case centers on a campaign in closely contested states ahead of the election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. America PAC encouraged registered voters to sign an online petition supporting freedom of speech and the right to bear arms. Anyone who wanted to participate had to provide personal information. In return, Musk held out the prospect of a daily million-dollar payout. The winners were supposedly going to be chosen at random. The promise was bound to attract attention, especially since an ordinary person could suddenly become a millionaire. During an earlier court proceeding in Pennsylvania, however, Musk's attorney Chris Gober offered an explanation that contradicted the public claims. The recipients had been selected based on their personal stories and their suitability to represent the political action committee. That seriously called the supposedly random selection into question. The million-dollar recipients were apparently also expected to be able to publicly represent the organization. What had been promised as a lucky chance turned out in court to be a selection based on political usefulness.

The Pennsylvania court allowed the payments to continue at the time after determining that the campaign did not legally qualify as an illegal lottery. That decision, however, did not answer every question about the truthfulness of the promotional promises. After the presidential election, several lawsuits followed against Musk and America PAC. The plaintiffs argued that the advertised random selection had persuaded them to participate. The defendants denied the allegations.

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, the parties informed a federal court in Austin, Texas, that they had reached a settlement in the cases. The agreements still require court approval. No details were initially released about possible payments to the plaintiffs or other obligations. A settlement also does not amount to a court finding that Musk personally committed fraud. Nevertheless, it brings a dispute over a campaign promise promoted with considerable financial resources to a provisional close. The case raises an uncomfortable question about the use of political influence. A billionaire can offer millions of dollars, collect voters' personal information, and then have his attorneys explain in court how the money was actually distributed. The ordinary person signing the petition has no comparable ability to determine the terms. Somewhere between the promise on the screen and the explanations in court lies that distance where trust usually disappears.

Both men belong to the political circle surrounding Trump's administration. Hegseth oversees a department where an official audit identified serious security vulnerabilities. Musk must deal with the consequences of his election campaign operation. The cases are legally distinct and provide no evidence of any coordinated action. They do, however, show how much political responsibility can be hidden behind enormous sums of money. For Hegseth, it concerns the safety of American soldiers. For Musk, it concerns the trust of voters who were promised a chance to win $1 million. The bills for all of this are nowhere near fully settled.

Five Days in Office: Trump's Press Secretary Fired, Failed the Bar Exam, Called Herself a Lawyer for Years

Katie Zacharia's career as White House press secretary is over after just 5 days. A new record for the shortest tenure of any White House press secretary, even under Trump. Her firing became public on Friday. Zacharia had replaced Karoline Leavitt, who left the administration in August. Her first appearance on October 13 lasted around 14 minutes. Only representatives from 3 selected news outlets were allowed to ask questions. She then directed the remaining reporters to the president.

Then Zacharia's past caught up with her. For years, she had described herself as a lawyer even though she had failed the California bar exam after graduating from Pepperdine University in 2011. She claimed to have worked in international business law in China with the necessary qualifications. She could not produce an American license to practice law. Investigations showed that she had only passed a separate examination on professional legal responsibilities. Trump initially praised her to the skies. Just a few days later, he was already advising her to step down. A White House press secretary's entire tenure had shrunk to the length of a bad workweek. The question surrounding her professional title outlasted her.

The circumstances of her departure make the whole affair even more revealing. No fewer than 4 people familiar with the decision confirmed her firing, including a senior White House official. Just hours earlier, Trump himself had publicly urged Zacharia to reconsider staying in the job. He said he had told her she did not have to take on the role if she did not want to. The media had treated her extremely badly over the past few days. If he were in her position, he would reconsider. At the same time, the president said he would ultimately let Zacharia decide for herself. He planned to speak with her again after returning from his campaign trip through Georgia. Even as her firing had already been confirmed, Trump was still saying he would do whatever she wanted. A White House press secretary loses her job after 5 days, and the president describes the whole thing almost as though he were offering some friendly advice about how to plan her life.

America 2026 - To be continued, probably as soon as tomorrow ...

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
