Early Monday morning, federal agents pounded on Ilhan Omar's door. Around 4:30 a.m., the noise woke a neighbor. Soon afterward, investigators carried boxes out of the Democratic congresswoman's home in Washington, labeled \"Seized Property Evidence,\" supposedly confiscated evidence. Three weeks before her reelection in Minnesota, in a campaign where she is regularly targeted by the Trump administration, the Democrat is once again at the center of attention. The search is part of an ongoing criminal case. Exactly what she is accused of was initially unclear. She denies the allegation of immigration fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing is what makes this so explosive. For years, the Justice Department has avoided taking visible action against candidates during the final 60 days before an election. This time, it broke with that practice. According to someone familiar with the matter, the department's leadership approved the raid only after extensive deliberations, precisely because of its proximity to the election, and a federal judge authorized it. The warrant was executed 22 days before Election Day, and the department already requires additional approvals for actions involving members of Congress. It lists several possible violations of immigration law, including false statements in documents and conspiracy to commit a crime. The initial application had been submitted more than a week earlier. Trump knew nothing about it, he said. The matter was \"really up to the Justice Department,\" and he had \"nothing to do with it.\" In the same breath, he called Omar \"corrupt through and through\" and a \"terrible person.\" They were \"looking at her very closely,\" he added, although he claimed not to know the details. At a rally in Ohio that evening, he attacked her Somali background, saying she came from a country \"that isn't even a real country\" and wanted to lecture Americans about the Constitution. The crowd chanted, \"Deport her.\" Days earlier in Tennessee, he had described a country full of \"crime and misery\" and suggested that Vice President JD Vance and \"our people\" were investigating her. Last year, he called her \"garbage\" and declared that Somalis should \"go back where they came from.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All of this had been announced long before. Vance had said they believed the congresswoman had \"very clearly committed immigration fraud\" and that he had discussed it with adviser Stephen Miller. The next step, according to Vance, was to build the necessary case to get justice for the American people. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin spoke weeks ago of \"ongoing investigations\" into the family's immigration records and added, \"Something is going to happen.\" There was no statute of limitations, he said. Tom Homan, Trump's border czar, had seen \"things going on\" and left no doubt that fraud had been committed. For details, Homan referred questions to Attorney General Todd Blanche and Mullin. They're digging into her origins. For years, conservatives have accused her of marrying her brother to help him enter the country. There is no evidence to support that accusation, and an earlier investigation ended without charges. Back in 2024, the department under Joe Biden had already investigated her, scrutinizing her finances and campaign funds. Contact with a foreign national was also part of that investigation. Now investigators are examining whether her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, made false statements when he obtained his residency permit and later his citizenship, and whether Omar derived her own citizenship from a father who might not have been entitled to it. If prosecutors found the evidence, they could seek to revoke her naturalization and then begin deportation proceedings. Mullin suggested the investigation could ultimately lead to her deportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her story makes this pursuit all the more glaring. Omar was born in Mogadishu in the early 1980s and fled the civil war as an 8-year-old child. Her family spent 4 years in a refugee camp in Kenya. They reached the United States in the mid-1990s, arrived in Minneapolis in 1997, and in 2000 she became a citizen at age 17. In 2018, she entered Congress as one of the first 2 Muslim women and the first person who had come to the United States as a refugee from Africa to win a seat there. Now the child from the refugee camp is supposed to become a foreigner again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minnesota is home to the country's largest Somali diaspora. In 2016, Omar became the first Somali American woman elected to the state legislature. Later, she joined the group of left-wing members of Congress known as \"The Squad,\" and in 2023 Republicans stripped her of her seat on the Foreign Affairs Committee because of her remarks about Israel. Racist attacks have followed her ever since, including from the White House.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The operation fits into a bigger picture. Trump makes no secret of wanting to direct criminal prosecutions against people he considers enemies. He pushed former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, both of whom had investigated him, into court. The same 60-day rule his people have now ignored was one Trump himself invoked in 2024 when he objected to a special counsel's filing shortly before the election. What served as a weapon for him back then no longer bothers him today. Mullin insisted that an investigation doesn't follow politics. It follows what a person has done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her district, which reliably votes Democratic, her reelection is hardly in danger, and more than 127,000 people in Minnesota have already voted. Minneapolis City Council member Jason Chavez expects the search to make her voters even angrier. Supporters gathered outside a park carrying signs reading \"Stand with Ilhan\" and \"Hands Off the Somali Community.\" That same district had already endured a major immigration enforcement operation this year, marked by violent clashes and the deaths of 2 American citizens. In January, Omar was sprayed with a liquid after an appearance. It was vinegar, and the attacker received a 14-month prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Democratic leaders called the raid \"deeply disturbing\" and an \"arbitrary abuse of power.\" It raised serious questions about whether the administration was continuing to corruptly target Trump's opponents. Less than 30 days before the midterm elections, Hakeem Jeffries and other party leaders declared that \"his violent mass deportation machine descended on the home of a duly elected congresswoman and her family.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar herself remained defiant. \"I'm okay,\" was her first message. The operation was an \"attempt to target political enemies and weaponize law enforcement,\" she wrote online. Trump had pursued her with baseless lies for 10 years, and this was simply the latest stage of his intimidation. She would not be silenced. She called the investigation against her entirely fabricated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A government that can strip an elected representative of her right to belong can do the same to anyone. In 3 weeks, the voters in her district will decide who holds their congressional seat. The agency had already decided to knock on her door. A passport that the government can take back whenever it pleases is nothing more than something temporarily loaned to you.
