The 2 federal lawsuits now filed also turn their attention to the operation that brought Ross to that location and to the men and women who were politically and organizationally responsible for it. According to the family, Ross first fired through the windshield and then through the side window while Good’s car was turning away from him. No federal agent was in front of the vehicle at that point, they say. Good, a mother of 3, was struck in the head and died. One of the lawsuits is against the United States. The family is seeking damages and accuses federal employees of unlawful use of force, false imprisonment and negligence, among other things. Becca Good also argues that she was forced to witness the killing firsthand.

Read also our article: Shot in her own car, then labeled a terrorist - Renee Good’s family sues the U.S. government

The second lawsuit reaches all the way into the leadership of the federal Metro Surge operation. In addition to Ross, it names Stephen Miller, Kristi Noem, Corey Lewandowski, Tom Homan, Todd Lyons and Greg Bovino, as well as other federal agents who have not yet been identified. Attorney Antonio Romanucci said the family believes what happened did not begin with Ross. The operation, he said, had been planned and directed from the top, with thousands of federal personnel sent to Minneapolis. In the family’s view, that means investigators must determine whether responsibility for Good’s death extends beyond the shooter. Donald Trump is not a defendant. Romanucci said, however, that the attorneys see him as part of the chain of responsibility they are alleging and would seek to question him under oath if they can overcome the legal barriers to deposing a sitting president.

The lawsuits also address what happened after the shots were fired. According to the family, federal agents did not provide Good with medical assistance and prevented a man who identified himself as a doctor from reaching her. Ross is also alleged to have violated federal rules governing the use of firearms against moving vehicles. Romanucci also pointed to statements made by administration officials about Good and to a misogynistic remark Ross allegedly made immediately after the shooting. For the family, that too is part of the question of the conditions under which this operation was carried out. Ross has not been criminally charged so far, and the investigation is ongoing. The White House called the lawsuits baseless and said it would fight them. The civil cases are proceeding independently of that. After the required 6-month waiting period expired, the family is now demanding records, sworn testimony and a judicial answer to a question that cannot be resolved with the name of a single agent: Who was responsible for an operation that ended with Renee Good dead on a street in Minneapolis?

Oleshky is starving behind mines and drones - 2,000 civilians are waiting for an escape route that never comes

Around 2,000 civilians are still trapped in Oleshky, including about 40 children. The Russian-occupied city on the Dnipro is cut off by minefields and drones constantly circling overhead, food is running low, and so is clean water. Electricity, gas and medical care are missing in many places. According to the city administration operating in exile, the last food delivery by road reached Oleshky on May 26. After that, several drivers were killed and further deliveries stopped. Residents write that they are cooking whatever supplies they have left. One person reported back in the summer that he would die in the fall. Anyone trying to leave the city drives or walks through an area where every road can become a trap.

Ukrainian authorities accuse Russia of attacking aid deliveries with drones, confiscating food and intimidating residents who accepted supplies. People who managed to leave Oleshky also report that Russia is keeping civilians from leaving because their departure could hurt Russian forces militarily. Moscow denies this and blames Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged a “real humanitarian catastrophe” but claimed Ukrainian forces were preventing people from leaving and disrupting food and drinking-water deliveries. Even a humanitarian corridor has still not been established. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is calling on the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross to finally organize a safe way out.

What has become of the former city of more than 20,000 people is described in the shocking accounts of those who escaped. Houses are destroyed, burned-out vehicles line the streets, and the dead are waiting to be buried. Residents report starving dogs eating human remains. Those still looking for food search through collapsed basements. Some say they see Russian soldiers doing the same. The city already survived the catastrophic flooding after the explosion at the nearby dam in 2023. Now a few kilometers of mined road determine whether people get food or make it out alive. A 60-year-old man who escaped with his wife remembered the driver’s warning: For the next 24 kilometers, they would be somewhere between life and death. A few weeks later, friends of the couple were killed on the same route when their vehicle hit a mine. Since then, practically nothing has come in by road.

The White House bars Politico from Air Force One - and cannot find anyone willing to take its place

Donald Trump is flying to Nebraska on Monday, but for the first time in a long time, Air Force One is traveling without the designated reporter from the main print press pool. Politico was supposed to have that slot. The White House, however, denied the outlet a seat on the presidential plane. Administration staff then called around to multiple news organizations looking for a replacement. None of the outlets they contacted agreed to step in. So the seat stayed empty. That press pool exists precisely so newspapers and news agencies do not each have to send their own reporter on every trip. One outlet observes, records and distributes its reporting to the others. Barring that reporter therefore takes away far more than a seat from a single newspaper.

The Washington Post had already been assigned as the second print outlet for the trip and remained in that role. Its reporter Katherine Doyle said she would provide occasional updates, and CBS said the same for the television pool. Both made clear that they were not replacing Politico. At the end of September, the White House had already barred CNN from Air Force One. At that time, ABC, CBS, Fox News and NBC also refused to take CNN’s vacated spot in the rotating television pool. Now the same thing is happening with the print press. The attempt to remove one outlet and put the next journalist in its chair has not worked so far.

A federal judge had already stopped Trump’s exclusion of Politico, CNN and MS NOW from the White House grounds. The outlets had sued. That ruling, however, protects only access to the White House and says nothing about travel on the presidential plane. That is exactly the gap the administration is now using. The White House said traveling with the president on Air Force One is a privilege, not a right. Trump, it said, is the most accessible president in American history, answers unfiltered questions almost every day and also speaks directly through Truth Social. That still does not answer the question of why an outlet assigned to the rotation is excluded and other news organizations are then asked to take over its job.

Politico confirmed that it had been excluded but offered no further explanation. The other outlets gave an answer through their actions. No one took the primary seat. So the president is now flying without the reporter who, under the agreed system, was supposed to be there. A court had prevented the White House only days earlier from simply keeping disfavored media organizations off its grounds. In the air, the administration is still trying.

For months, Rick Jackson wanted to be Trump’s favorite governor - now Trump has disappeared from his campaign website

“The establishment hated Trump because they couldn’t control him. They’ll hate me for the same reason.” The line comes from a 2026 Rick Jackson campaign ad titled “Truth”

Rick Jackson spent months trying to make his closeness to Donald Trump look as big as possible. In February, the Republican candidate for governor of Georgia even ran a 30-second Super Bowl ad comparing himself directly to Trump. “Like President Trump, I don’t owe anybody anything,” Jackson said in the ad. Later in the campaign, he promised to become Trump’s “favorite governor” and described himself as a kind of Trump with a “Southern tone.” As recently as June, his website said he would work with President Trump to protect Georgians from the consequences of Washington’s failures. That sentence is now gone. Trump’s name went with it.

There was not much warmth coming from Trump’s direction for a long time anyway. Jackson was by no means his original preferred candidate. Trump initially backed Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones. Jackson beat Jones in the Republican runoff in June and only received Trump’s endorsement afterward, in July. What had been sold for months as a political seal of approval is now no longer on Jackson’s campaign website. No explanation has been given for its removal. The timing, however, comes during a period when several Republican candidates are dialing back their visible closeness to the president.

Jackson is not alone. Republican Congressman Byron Donalds, who is running for governor in Florida, has also removed Trump from his campaign website. Other Republicans have recently made their public ties to the president quieter as well. That does not automatically tell us why Jackson changed his website. But one thing is clear: Just a few months ago, every voter was supposed to see how closely he aligned himself with Trump. Now you have to look for that connection. For a candidate who was determined to become Trump’s favorite governor, that is a pretty striking editorial decision.

Trump looks for someone to blame for expensive gas - the Iran war remains the biggest price driver

Donald Trump now explains high gas prices to Americans differently than he did just a few months ago. The Strait of Hormuz is no longer the main problem, he wrote on October 5, refineries are. Ukraine is bombing Russian facilities, while refineries are being shut down in Democratic-run states such as California. That shifts a significant share of the responsibility outward and at the same time toward his political opponents. It is not entirely made up: Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities have put additional pressure on the international market, especially diesel. But that does not come close to explaining the whole situation.

Prices shot up after the war against Iran began, when traffic through the Strait of Hormuz collapsed. About one fifth of the world’s oil normally passes through that waterway. Conditions have improved recently, but there is no sign of a return to the old normal. At the end of September, visible ship movements were still far below prewar levels according to one analysis, even though some tankers travel with their tracking systems turned off and therefore do not show up in those counts. At the same time, refineries in the Middle East remain damaged, transportation routes are expensive and fuel remains scarce. Crude oil has at times started flowing more strongly again, but gasoline and diesel are not produced by headlines about more barrels. They are produced in facilities that have to work.

At gas stations, there is little sign of relief. On October 5, a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States cost an average of around $4.37. In California, it was around $6.39. Even in mid-September, the American Automobile Association explicitly pointed to the continuing problems around Hormuz and expensive crude oil when explaining rising prices. The United States has also imported practically no Russian oil since 2022. Before the ban, around 8 percent of U.S. petroleum imports came from Russia. Russian refineries can affect the global market, but they do not suddenly explain on their own why Americans are paying so much at the pump today.

Trump is right that several causes are coming together. His claim that Hormuz is now practically out of the picture, however, does not hold up against the current situation. The Iran war, damaged refinery capacity and still-uncertain transportation routes continue to affect prices. Ukraine contributes its share to the shortage. California refinery closures also play a regional role. But anyone who turns that into a story in which Ukraine and the Democrats are mainly responsible for the bill leaves out the most expensive part of the bill: the war that has thrown the oil market off balance since February.

Fact-check: Trump’s account does not hold up in this form. Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries have put additional pressure on the international fuel market, especially diesel. Refinery closures in California can also raise prices there regionally. But for the sharp nationwide and international increase in gas prices, the data we reviewed point above all to the war against Iran, the continuing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, high crude oil prices and limited refinery capacity. The G7 decision of October 2, 2026 was also the wrong decision. Trump’s claim that the Strait of Hormuz now plays practically no role is also not supported by the data. Exports have partially recovered, but conditions have not returned to prewar levels. Nor can refinery closures in Democratic-run states be used to conclude that Democrats are responsible for the nationwide increase in prices. Trump’s claim that Ukraine and the Democrats are the main causes of high gas prices is not supported by the data we reviewed.

We warned before the G7 decision because our reporting had already shown that releasing reserves would not eliminate the causes. The war against Iran remained, Hormuz remained uncertain, refinery capacity remained tight, transportation routes remained expensive. Now, just a few days later, we are seeing exactly what we described: The relief is weak and uneven, prices in Germany are already rising again after the initial drop, while France and Belgium are practically standing still.

Read also our article: Nothing Learned - Trump Gives Himself an A-Plus, and the G7 Open the Diesel Tanks for Him

The reserves are smaller, the problem is still there. That is exactly why investigative reporting exists in the first place: to make developments visible before they hit everyone in the face at the gas pump or on their electricity bill, so a society knows early enough what is coming and might still be able to defend itself.

Our reporting shows: Protected in the U.S., sent into danger under Trump - 40 LGBT migrants deported to hostile third countries

At least 40 LGBT migrants who had been granted protection by the United States from persecution in their home countries were deported under Donald Trump to African third countries where same-sex relationships are criminalized or where LGBT people are persecuted according to the U.S. government’s own findings. They came from African countries, but also from Iraq, Jamaica and Russia. Washington was not allowed to send them back to their home countries because of the danger they faced there. So they were sent to other countries where, in some cases, they face hardly less danger. Since Trump returned to the White House, this practice has been massively expanded: More than 40,000 people are said to have already been deported to countries whose citizenship they do not hold. Around 900 ended up in Africa. Before Trump’s second term, this happened only rarely.

The consequences can now be traced. 16 of the 40 people affected are still in the countries to which the United States sent them, some still in detention. Another 16 were later forcibly deported from those countries back to their home countries against their will. Nine fled again and are now living in hiding in other countries. Relatives and attorneys have lost contact with one person. The United States sent people to Sierra Leone, Cameroon and Eswatini, among other places, where same-sex sex is criminally prosecuted. Others were sent to countries where it is legal, but where the U.S. State Department itself had documented violence against LGBT people, including so-called corrective rape and forced conversion treatment.

The case of Abdou Latifou shows where this policy can lead. The man from Togo fled to the United States after a mob beat him because of his relationship with a man and threatened to kill him. A U.S. court therefore barred his deportation to Togo. In June, U.S. authorities sent him instead to Sierra Leone, where men can face life imprisonment for same-sex relationships. Two weeks later, authorities there put him on a plane to Togo. Latifou fled again and eventually made it to Ivory Coast. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security says sexual orientation plays no role in deportation decisions and that third-country deportations are an important tool for public safety. At the end of September, the Supreme Court temporarily put a lower-court restriction on this practice on hold. Until the hearing in December, the administration can continue. People whom America was explicitly supposed to protect from persecution can therefore still be sent to countries whose treatment of LGBT people the U.S. government itself warns about. Our reporting and our support will continue in these cases as well. In a world where looking away is unfortunately turning more and more into simply watching, we will give every bit of help we can to innocent people detained and deported by ICE.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
