Armed, masked federal agents could be standing where citizens cast their votes, and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin would not rule that out when speaking to reporters on Tuesday. He said he could not guarantee that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers would not be present at polling places in the upcoming elections. This came after dozens of violent raids and premature deaths in run-down detention facilities. There were also several shocking killings by President Donald Trump's immigration police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Bannon, an ally of the president, is demanding an \"up-armored ICE presence\" that would \"surround the polls come November.\" Democrats are increasingly worried about voter suppression while Republicans in Congress face the possibility of being punished in the midterms. At the same time, Trump is once again spreading the false warning that immigrants commit voter fraud, while a broader crackdown on speech and protest is underway. The greatest fear is poorly trained new ICE recruits who could keep people from voting in predominantly Black and nonwhite neighborhoods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mullin tried to sound reassuring, saying ICE would respond only to \"specific threats\" and would not \"patrol the polling place.\" In the same breath, he suggested that even a report about a person without legal status could bring agents to a polling place. Shortly after taking office, the administration scrapped rules that prohibited arrests in public places such as schools, and schools are used as polling places in many areas. Masked agents grabbed parents while they were dropping off their children and people at bus stops; the footage spread across the internet. \"If we're serving a warrant, we will be where we need to be,\" he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An answer to that threat is now taking shape. On September 2, the Save America Movement and the bipartisan Vote Safe coalition unveiled a voter protection program. Led by civil rights activist Al Sharpton and American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, Vote Safe is sending hundreds of trained volunteers to polling places, firefighters, clergy and other trusted faces from local communities. They are supposed to stand where ICE would be most likely to show up based on Trump's earlier election maneuvers. The program was built around a single question. \"We asked ourselves: What would Stephen Miller do?\" says Mary Corcoran, executive director of the Save America Movement. Wherever he would send agents to bend an election result, that is exactly where the protection is being directed. The trained observers are focusing on competitive districts with large nonwhite populations, in Ohio and Georgia. North Carolina and Michigan are included as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a long time, that sounded exaggerated. It no longer does. Reporting and conversations with internal sources paint a different picture. With abuses increasing and Trump's approval ratings falling, organizers now consider it entirely plausible that armed federal agents could appear outside polling places in Black and Latino communities, Corcoran says. The more clearly the numbers pointed toward a larger \"blue wave,\" the closer that possibility seemed to them. An officer at a polling place, under whatever pretext, would be another way to keep voters away from the ballot box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seriousness of it can be read on a map. Since June 2025, when Trump sent federal troops to Los Angeles while ICE carried out raids and mass protests erupted, organizers have been preparing for this moment. From there, the operations spread further. Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul felt them. Later came New Orleans and Memphis, along with other cities with large immigrant communities. The mass detention of families and children with no criminal records in decaying camps has triggered fierce political resistance. In the affected neighborhoods, protests broke out and mutual aid expanded rapidly. The anger over it did not stay silent. In all of these incidents, people came together and said this had gone too far, says Cristina Jim\u00e9nez, co-founder of United We Dream and Connected Americans, a project for people affected by ICE. The same spirit will be there at the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More is coming together at the ballot box than a choice between candidates. If voters throw out officeholders who support ICE, they could slow the agency's operations in residential neighborhoods and its deadly violence, and cripple Trump for the rest of his term. To do that, they would have to overcome racially manipulated district maps and the administration's attempts to drive down turnout. The right-wing majority on the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act \"right on schedule\" for the midterms, Weingarten says, and now the other side is using fear to \"finish the job.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This has already been practiced in Washington. The DC Election Protection Coalition trained volunteer observers and voting-rights attorneys for the June elections. The city has been under a National Guard deployment ordered by Trump for more than a year, and his lavish July 4 celebrations brought additional Guard troops and police into public areas. Carmen Daugherty, interim executive director of the Advancement Project within that coalition, says volunteers monitored polling places and watched for closures, ready to call attorneys if soldiers approached or tried to enter a polling place in violation of local law. Their records were meant to show what was happening in this authoritarian grab for the vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The threat of sending armed federal agents to polling places is an attempt to intimidate people and determine who holds power in the country, Weingarten said in a statement, and it will not work. Vote Safe puts someone at voters' side who knows their rights and knows the law, so fear does not get the last word. More people care about fair and free elections than those who want to suppress votes, Daugherty says, and that is why people have to show up in large numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
