At the same time, the brief lull in the war between the U.S. and Iran is over: Both sides are openly attacking each other again. In New York, ICE arrested around 2,100 people within one month, while nationwide more than half of those arrested recently had neither been convicted of a crime nor were facing pending criminal charges. And just months before the U.S. elections, a whistleblower is warning about a new Postal Service rule that, in the worst-case scenario, could result in entire batches of valid mail-in ballots being thrown out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twenty-three-year-old Tyler Robinson must stand trial over the fatal shooting of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. Judge Tony Graf ruled Tuesday in Provo, Utah, that prosecutors had presented enough evidence to send the case to a jury. Kirk was shot and killed on September 10, 2025, during an event at Utah Valley University in front of thousands of people. Prosecutors accuse Robinson of deliberately killing Kirk because of his political beliefs. Because numerous people were in the immediate vicinity when the shot was fired, including children, prosecutors can seek the death penalty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternatively, Robinson faces life in prison without the possibility of parole or 25 years to life with the possibility of parole later. Prosecutors had already presented their evidence during a five-day preliminary hearing in July. Judge Graf said the positions of several people around the area where Kirk was speaking supported the conclusion that Robinson knew how many people were near his target. That was exactly the point the defense challenged. His attorneys argued that the shooter had a clear line of sight, fired only a single shot, and fired over the crowd. Prosecutors countered that no one could fire a high-powered rifle into a crowd of around 3,000 people without knowing that other people could also be put in mortal danger. They described the amount of evidence against Robinson as overwhelming. Judge Graf ultimately ordered Robinson to stand trial on all seven charges. In addition to the murder charge, they include obstruction of justice and discharging a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robinson showed no visible reaction during closing arguments. His mother, Amber Robinson, sat in the courtroom, while his father, Matt Robinson, watched the proceedings with his head lowered. Kirk's parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, as well as his widow, Erika Kirk, were also present. The family temporarily left the courtroom when a prosecutor described the shooting. Kirk's family said after the decision that, nearly a year after his death, an important step in the court proceedings had now been reached. The top Democrat on the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee is openly calling for Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to resign. Gregory Meeks of New York said after Driscoll's resignation that developments at the Pentagon were becoming increasingly concerning to him. He said this was no longer just about one individual departure, but about the leadership of the military as a whole. Driscoll is the latest in a long line of senior military officials who have left their posts or been pushed out under Hegseth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Meeks, a line has now been crossed. \"Hegseth has to go, there's no question about it,\" the Democrat said. His party wants to closely investigate Hegseth's leadership if it wins control of Congress in the fall elections. Decisions at the Pentagon, personnel changes, and Hegseth's handling of military leadership could then become the subject of congressional investigations. Democrats are already making clear that they do not intend to simply accept the many departures as routine personnel changes. For Meeks, Driscoll's resignation has only deepened the doubts about what is happening at the Pentagon under Hegseth. The fact that senior military leaders keep leaving or being forced out is becoming increasingly politically explosive just months before the elections. Hegseth is no longer under pressure only because of individual decisions. A leading Democrat on the relevant committee is now openly demanding that his time at the top of the Pentagon come to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China's state-owned shipping giant COSCO under suspicion of espionage - political commissars could pass intelligence orders on board<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Chinese state-owned shipping giant COSCO is alleged to have been making its global merchant fleet available for intelligence purposes for years. According to senior U.S. government officials, ships operated by the company contain hidden technology capable of intercepting military communications off the coasts of other countries. Signals from ships and aircraft in Europe, North America, and Asia are reportedly among those affected. COSCO is one of the world's largest shipping companies and operates cargo ships on virtually all major international shipping routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon already placed the company on a list of firms with ties to the Chinese military in January 2025. A few months later, the U.S. Naval War College described how China's People's Liberation Army may be using fishing and merchant vessels for intelligence gathering and surveillance. Chinese laws also require companies to cooperate with state intelligence agencies. Christopher Sharman, director of the China Maritime Studies Institute at the U.S. Naval War College, points to a feature that goes far beyond ordinary relations between the state and private companies. Chinese oceangoing merchant vessels, including COSCO ships, have political commissars on board. They represent the party and the state on board, handle political and administrative duties, and share the highest authority on the vessel with the captain. While the captain is primarily responsible for operating the ship, the political commissar is responsible, among other things, for implementing state directives and carrying out party work on board <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Beijing wanted to give a COSCO ship an intelligence assignment, there would already be a permanent state structure directly on board through which such an order could be passed along. Sharman also points out that numerous Chinese security laws are written very broadly and give authorities considerable leeway to compel companies to cooperate. For Beijing, using the merchant fleet in this way would be extremely attractive. Dedicated military or intelligence vessels quickly attract attention in foreign waters, while ordinary cargo ships are part of the everyday landscape in ports and along international shipping routes. COSCO has a global presence in exactly those places. The same ships that carry containers between major economic centers could therefore give China access to maritime areas that would be significantly harder to reach with openly deployed government or military vessels. Sharman emphasizes that he is speaking in a personal capacity and that his assessment does not necessarily reflect the position of the U.S. government or the U.S. Department of Defense. Even so, the allegations go far beyond suspicions of individual espionage voyages: The question is whether part of China's enormous merchant fleet could, when needed, simultaneously be used as a global network for state intelligence gathering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After weeks without major direct attacks, the U.S. and Iran have openly returned to war. U.S. Central Command said Tuesday that it had completed a new wave of strikes against facilities belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards. The targets included air defense positions, radar systems, maritime facilities, mine-laying capabilities, and communications facilities. According to Iranian reports, many of the targets were near the Strait of Hormuz, where Tehran had recently threatened tankers passing through the strait without Iranian permission. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on U.S. facilities in Jordan and Iraq, while Iranian media also reported an attack on Bahrain. Jordan's armed forces detected 13 ballistic missiles, ten of which were intercepted while three landed in remote areas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bahrain reported intercepting Iranian drones. The Revolutionary Guards claimed that numerous U.S. soldiers had been killed in Jordan and several others in Erbil in northern Iraq. According to initial statements from two U.S. government officials, however, there were no U.S. fatalities in Jordan; there was initially also no confirmation from Washington or Baghdad of the claimed attack on Erbil. Particularly serious is an incident near Sirik on Iran's coast. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, five people were killed and at least 50 injured in an attack on a wedding celebration. A four-year-old child is said to be among the dead, while an Iranian agency put the number of injured as high as 68. The U.S. has so far not commented on the attack. Tehran places it alongside earlier civilian casualties of the war, including the attack on a girls' school in Minab in which 160 people died at the beginning of the war. A final Pentagon investigation into that incident has still not been released; according to earlier reports, outdated targeting material may have played a role. The new round of attacks ends a period dating back to July in which both sides showed little interest in new negotiations but avoided major direct attacks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The war is now putting pressure on both countries. Iran's already weakened economy has been hit further and parts of its conventional military forces have been weakened. At the same time, the U.S. has used up a significant share of its globally available precision long-range missiles, while Donald Trump is facing rising fuel prices ahead of the congressional elections in November. Even so, Washington continues to rely on military pressure. Trump said the U.S. now had nearly complete control over the Strait of Hormuz and that Iran's economy was collapsing. At the same time, he publicly asked when the Iranian people would rise up. Tehran's joint military command then threatened even more severe and longer-range attacks and explicitly warned countries that support the U.S. military as well. After several weeks of relative calm, exactly what both sides supposedly wanted to avoid is back: a war that could escalate further at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a large-scale operation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE arrested around 2,100 people in New York within one month. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin broadly labeled those arrested \"criminals\" at a press conference in New York and sharply attacked Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani for refusing to cooperate with ICE. But the numbers from the agency's nationwide operations paint a very different picture. In July, ICE arrested nearly 50,000 people, more than half of whom had neither been convicted of a crime nor were facing pending criminal charges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the administration massively expanded its deportation operations over the summer, people without criminal records are increasingly being swept up in the raids. Mullin's statement that those arrested in New York were \"criminals\" therefore comes in an environment where ICE's own arrest numbers have long shown that the agency is going far beyond convicted criminals. At the same time, Hochul and Mamdani delivered their own response to the offensive from Washington. While Mullin defended his operation, they said at a parallel press conference that the Trump administration was withholding $87 million in federal counterterrorism funding from New York. Two conflicts are now colliding directly in New York: an ever-expanding federal deportation operation and the open fight with the Democratic-led authorities of the state and city. The Trump administration accuses New York of failing to cooperate on deportations. New York, in turn, accuses Washington of withholding critical security funding. And while politicians talk about \"criminals,\" ICE's nationwide numbers show that tens of thousands of people are being arrested even though they are not facing any criminal proceedings at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Postal Service rule could wipe out millions of valid mail-in ballots - whistleblower warns about Trump's new election directive<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A new U.S. Postal Service rule could, according to a whistleblower, result in millions of completely valid mail-in ballots being thrown out. At the center of the issue is a so-called \"zero-percent rule\" that, when errors are found in a shipment of election materials, could affect not only individual problematic ballots but the entire batch. Even a single alleged error among tens of thousands of properly mailed election materials could therefore result in all of the affected mail being rejected. The rule was introduced as part of Donald Trump's directive to more tightly restrict and control mail-in voting. Under the rule, election materials must be personally delivered to a post office by an election official and then scanned so the data can be matched against the voter registry. Additional checks follow after that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Whistleblower Aid, a single error identified during one of these checks can result in the entire shipment being rejected. Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal therefore describes it as a system that could strip millions of Americans of their right to vote. For him, this is not just some technical Postal Service problem, but a direct threat to validly cast ballots. He hopes courts will stop the rule and calls it unconstitutional and unacceptable. The White House initially did not respond to the new allegations. The administration had previously defended Trump's directive as a reasonable measure against voter fraud. That is exactly where the dispute now lies: A rule supposedly designed to prevent errors could, according to the whistleblower's warning, result in huge numbers of valid mail-in ballots being affected because of a single mistake. Just months before the elections, this is not a theoretical question, but one of whether properly cast ballots will even make it to the count.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
