Vladimir Putin immediately used the opening for separate talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is also expected to meet with Putin on Tuesday, when the official sessions begin. It is obvious why Moscow and Tehran in particular need this circle so badly right now. Russia has been waging its war against Ukraine for four and a half years, while Iran has been at war with the United States and Israel for half a year. Both governments are therefore looking for closer ties with countries that are not prepared to simply fall in line with Washington's political demands.

China brings economic weight to the table, India an importance that reaches far beyond the region. New Delhi in particular makes this meeting uncomfortable for the United States, because India does not fit neatly into one camp and decides for itself who it does business with and which table it sits at. While Washington tries to maintain its influence through tariffs, sanctions, and military pressure, countries are sitting together in Kyrgyzstan that want to limit exactly that influence, or at least are not willing to accept it as a given.

Putin gets international contacts that visibly limit his isolation from the West, while Iran finds partners outside Europe and North America. Xi, meanwhile, is meeting with two major countries whose relations with Washington have become more difficult. This is not a gathering of old friends who have suddenly discovered the same worldview. These are governments with their own interests that are realizing one thing benefits all of them: less dependence on the United States. Washington is not in the room. Its policies are still sitting on almost every chair.

Trump Declares Iran Destroyed - Then Threatens More Bombs in the Very Next Sentence

Donald Trump supposedly knows exactly what the American and Israeli attacks have done to Iran, but there is one thing he does not want to say: whether the war is now about to fully erupt again. Asked whether Sunday's attack on Iran's Larak Island was a limited military action or the opening round of renewed open fighting with Tehran, the president dodged the question. Instead, he once again declared Iran a "failed nation." Large parts of its political leadership had been killed, he said, the economy was being battered by rising inflation, and the military had been severely devastated.

Listening to Trump, you might think there is barely anything left worth bombing. But that is not what his next sentence sounds like. More attacks could be necessary, Trump said. "That doesn't mean we won't smack them. We'll see what happens." That is how a president talks about a war whose next round he is explicitly keeping open. First the enemy is declared finished, then the next strike is already hanging in the air. No clear limit, no visible endpoint, not even a promise that Larak will remain a one-off action. For Iran, that means any pause can end at any moment as soon as Washington decides to strike again. And for the rest of the world, the same question remains as it has for months: If Iran, by Trump's own account, is economically on its knees, its leadership decimated, and its military devastated - how many more bombs will it take before this war is enough for him?

Ukraine Is Running Short of Patriot Missiles - Spain and Greece Are Holding Onto Their Stockpiles

Ukraine is urgently asking for new missiles for its Patriot air defenses, while NATO and the European Union are now putting pressure on Spain and Greece to hand over part of their stockpiles. Both countries have particularly large supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles among Kyiv's allies, but that is exactly where the willingness to help quickly reaches the limits of their own borders. Greece has so far refused and points to its decades-long dispute with Turkey and its own defense needs. Spain is also coming under growing pressure.

On September 1 and 2, defense and foreign ministers are set to discuss the issue in Dublin, together with representatives from Ukraine, Britain, Norway, Iceland, and Switzerland. One proposal even being discussed would have Norway buy Patriot missiles and then transfer them to Ukraine. What makes this especially bitter is that some of the missiles stored in Spain and Greece are approaching the end of their intended service life. Yet everyone is still holding tightly to what they have. Germany also says giving up additional Patriot systems could endanger its own security. And even the United States, long seen as an almost inexhaustible weapons stockpile, has significantly depleted its supplies in the war with Iran. For Ukraine, that is becoming an increasingly dangerous equation.

Since the beginning of this year, the country has been receiving almost three times fewer air-defense missiles than before, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in part because weapons are now needed in the Middle East. At the end of August, Zelenskyy said another small shipment of Patriot missiles had arrived. He would not say which country they came from or how many missiles were delivered. He said only one thing without dancing around it: "There are only a few. We need more." At the same time, Russia says it is preparing new massive attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. At exactly this moment, Europe is debating which country can spare how many missiles without making itself uncomfortable. Ukraine is not waiting for a theoretical debate about stockpiles. When Russian missiles are flying toward power plants and cities, every interceptor that is actually available decides what will still be standing the next morning. And while some of the missiles sitting in European warehouses are approaching their expiration dates, Kyiv can barely get enough of them to intercept the next attack.

Trump Keeps Building Even Though Courts Say the Ballroom Is Unlawful - by the Time the Ruling Comes, It May Be Too Late

Donald Trump is getting exactly what his administration has needed for months: time on the construction site. The Supreme Court on Monday allowed work to continue on his $400 million White House ballroom, even though lower courts had stopped the project and four justices on the nation's highest court consider it "likely unlawful." The majority did not declare that Trump was allowed to build the ballroom without congressional approval. It merely questioned whether the preservation group suing over the project even has the legal right to challenge it. For the White House, that is enough. The East Wing has already been demolished, crews are working up to 20 hours a day according to the administration, the structural frame is supposed to be finished in November, and large parts of the facade are expected to be done by April.

While lawyers argue over who is allowed to sue, the administration is creating facts on the ground that will be almost impossible to undo later. That is exactly what the plaintiffs warned about: Trump is trying to build faster than the courts can rule. Federal Judge Richard Leon halted aboveground construction in April because the project lacked congressional approval. Two appeals court judges upheld that view and wrote in unmistakable terms that decisions like this belong to Congress and are not something the executive branch can simply take care of on its own. Even Chief Justice John Roberts broke with the majority this time and joined the court's three liberal justices.

The work continues anyway. What is especially remarkable is the argument the administration is now using to fight for the project. Trump originally presented the ballroom as a privately funded project. In court, the administration now says completing it is "vitally required by national security." A ballroom that supposedly did not need taxpayer money has suddenly become a matter of national security. The case now goes back to the lower courts, but what begins there is a race in which one side pours concrete while the other writes legal briefs. By the time a final ruling comes down, $400 million may have been spent, the historic East Wing may be gone, and the new ballroom may be largely finished. At that point, the decisive question will no longer be only whether Trump was allowed to do it. It will be what a court can still accomplish when a president simply keeps building until the answer has almost no practical meaning left.

Another One Out at the Pentagon - Army Secretary Driscoll Quits After Months of Clashes With Hegseth

Dan Driscoll was once the man some already saw as a possible replacement for Pete Hegseth. Now he is the one who has submitted his resignation as Army secretary to Donald Trump, after months of clashes with Hegseth and his inner circle. This is not some minor personnel matter buried somewhere inside the Pentagon. Driscoll has led the Army since February 2025, was supposed to make it faster, more modern, and less cumbersome, and was given an important role in defending against the cheap drones that are now forcing modern militaries to throw old ideas about warfare overboard.

Now the man who was supposed to drive exactly that work forward is leaving. Hegseth remains, while the Pentagon's leadership has been emptying out around him for months. Senior officers have been fired, often without any public explanation. In April, it was Gen. Randy George, the Army's highest-ranking officer. Now the civilian head of the service is following him out the door. You can explain each of these cases separately, but at some point the question becomes unavoidable: What happens to an institution when conflict with the political leadership keeps ending with the other side disappearing? Driscoll's case is especially striking because he was not just some Hegseth opponent, but someone who was at one point seen as a possible alternative. So the potential successor is leaving the building, while the secretary he spent months clashing with stays.

Even more remarkable is the silence afterward. Hegseth's people referred questions to the Army, the Army initially said it was looking into what there was to say, and the White House did not respond. A secretary submits his resignation after months of clashes, and Washington's first response is a set of doors behind which nobody wants to be responsible. For the Pentagon, Driscoll's departure means one thing above all: once again, someone at the very top is leaving, and once again a conflict ends not with an open political confrontation but with an empty chair. Hegseth does not have to beat his opponents. Eventually, they are simply no longer there.

Trump Calls Data Center Opponents "Backwards and Poor" - Now His Own MAGA Base Is Tearing Him Apart

Donald Trump managed to do something on Monday that usually falls to his opponents: he turned his own people against him. According to Trump, Beijing is supposedly thrilled about every American who pushes back against these facilities. It did not take long under Trump's own post for exactly the people he believes he speaks for to answer him. "I regret ever supporting you." "You have lost your mind." "Horrendous messaging." One user wrote that her area was already under water restrictions. Another was even more direct: Trump might make money from this, while residents are left with less water, more noise, and worse lives. That is the part of the story Trump likes to skip in his enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. Data centers devour water and electricity, can drive up utility bills for nearby residents, and often leave only a few dozen permanent jobs once construction is finished. Opposition to them is no longer left or right. It is growing wherever people experience what having a giant server complex next to their community actually means.

Just a month ago, Trump claimed that smart communities were practically begging for these facilities because they brought enormous numbers of jobs and caused hardly any disruption. His own supporters are now telling him publicly that this is nonsense. What his administration is preparing at the same time makes it even more brazen. The Environmental Protection Agency wants to scrap rules requiring data centers to disclose how much they pollute their surroundings and what substances they release. Residents are supposed to know less, while the president tells them their concerns make them backwards. Billions in investment from tech companies are behind the expansion, and Trump sells their interests as an American duty in the race with China. Anyone who asks about water, electricity prices, noise, or quality of life is not taken seriously by him, but insulted. This time, though, the old trick is not working very well. Because the people pushing back are not sitting at CNN and they are not wearing Democratic campaign buttons. They are writing on Truth Social, they voted for Trump, and they are discovering that even MAGA suddenly becomes a problem the moment it stands between a data center and the next billion-dollar project.

Independent Journalism · Kaizen Blog

We are where,
it hurts

We do not sit comfortably indoors writing about the world - and we do not stop once the writing ends.
