In Toronto on Saturday, 16,000 people sang the old name of a lake and made the president of the United States look small. They simply refused to go along with his geographical fantasy. The Canadian band Blue Rodeo played at the RBC Amphitheatre, which sits directly on the shore of Lake Ontario, the body of water Trump wants to rename \"Lake America.\" The crowd gave its answer in chorus. A world power lost a fight over a name to a singing crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/olblutoroont.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the band launched into their 1993 favorite \"Hasn't Hit Me Yet,\" in which snow falls on the quiet waters of Lake Ontario, singer Greg Keelor turned to the audience. Near the end of the song, he said, a lake gets mentioned, and he pointed to the water behind the band. Its name, he said, had become a little controversial. He asked the crowd to sing as if the lake belonged to them, for shimmering waters that had been there long before any of them. The crowd did not need to be asked twice and roared \"Lake Ontario\" into the night. Those who were not inside the arena followed the moment through a livestream online. A line in a song became a vote, and the people voted with their voices. Sad enough as it is. And Google, well - throw it in the trash.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\"Lake America\" - Canada: still \"Lake Ontario\" - Germany, Europe, and the rest of the world: both names, so something like \"Lake Ontario (Lake America).\"<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind the band, the screens showed a map where the lake was still called \"Lake Ontario,\" while Google's map service had already changed the name for users in the United States. Fans filmed the maps and shared them online, and the band later shared their footage as well. \"You're good Canadians,\" Keelor shouted on his 72nd birthday. His bandmate Jim Cuddy summed up the night more bluntly: \"We are who we are. Fuck 'em.\" Online, one person called the performance \"perfection,\" while another wrote that the fans had shown up for Canada and Lake Ontario. Representatives for the band and the White House, asked for comment, initially remained silent. The map behind the band and the map on phones in the United States showed two different worlds, and only one of them had ever actually stood on the shoreline. The other existed only on a server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Politics had already taken a side. Ontario Premier Doug Ford had a large sign put up on Saturday bearing the name Lake Ontario and the words \"Now and Always.\" Trump only wanted to rename the lake because he did not like Ontario and Canada standing up for themselves, Ford said. Long before there was a President Trump, the lake was called Lake Ontario, and long after he is gone, it will still be called that. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote that the lake is called Lake Ontario today and forever, and that the name predates both Canadian Confederation and the United States Declaration of Independence. So much history in one word, so little in one decree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"360\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 640 \/ 360;\" width=\"640\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ontatiounveils.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and his AI crew answered in their own strange way. On Saturday, he shared an AI-generated video on his platform in which he kicks over a sign reading \"Welcome to Lake Ontario,\" replaces it with \"Welcome to Lake America,\" and dances to an old Village People disco hit. A name that has outlived two nations against a man kicking a sign in a cartoon does not make for a fair fight, only a revealing one. What cannot be owned gets kicked instead, and the camera captures the little triumph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignwide\"><video height=\"960\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 960 \/ 960;\" width=\"960\" controls src=\"https:\/\/kaizen-blog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/OMG-TRU.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Sunday, the anger had still not faded. Trump defended his tariff fight and his threat to double duties on Canadian cars from 25 to 50 percent starting January 1. He did not want anything Canadian anymore, he wrote, the country had been ripping off the United States for decades, and that sense of entitlement was over. Of all the governments he dealt with, he said, Canada was the worst. He told Canadian companies to move to the United States immediately, and then the tariffs would disappear. Their long-ago stolen companies were now coming back and lining up like the rest of the world. The fight over a name and the fight over tariffs come from the same wounded feeling in him. Anger and economics flowed from one post into the next. The dispute over a lake's name had long since become part of a much larger trade war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lake does not care about any of it. Its water lay in its bed before the border was drawn on a map and before either of the two countries now arguing over its name even existed. A president can kick over signs and have a map service rewritten. Names outlive those who try to change them because they live in more mouths than in a single decree.
