Guillotine near the U.S. Capitol - Police arrest 35-year-old man<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On Tuesday, a man from California was arrested near the U.S. Capitol in Washington after police discovered a guillotine in the bed of his pickup truck. The vehicle was illegally parked east of the Capitol grounds. At around 3 p.m., officers moved in and arrested 35-year-old Philan-Tam-Duy Le from Julian, California. According to Capitol Police, he had driven all the way from California to Washington. Why he made the trip and why, of all things, he was transporting a guillotine remains unclear. That is exactly what police are now trying to figure out. The device was sitting openly in the bed of the pickup, just minutes from the political center of the United States. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A guillotine is not exactly an ordinary object someone just happens to carry around in their vehicle. It was developed in France in the late 18th century as an instrument for beheading and became a symbol of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. Whether the man intended the guillotine as a political message is not known at this point. It is equally unclear whether he had a specific target or was simply transporting the device. Authorities have not provided any further details so far. What is known is that the man had driven across the country and ultimately ended up standing near the Capitol with a guillotine. In Washington, that fact alone is likely to draw considerable attention. At a time when political violence in the United States is no longer some distant possibility, the question of motive will be decisive. So far, there is no answer. The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia expands its liquefied natural gas fleet - China is supposed to take over when Europe shuts the door<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Russia is visibly preparing for the next step in its energy war with Europe. Novatek and its partners are expanding the fleet serving the sanctioned Arctic LNG 2 project, while shipping traffic along the Northern Sea Route is reaching new records. Since the beginning of the year, according to Reuters, 2.3 million tons of liquefied natural gas have been shipped from the project to the Chinese port of Beihai in 31 deliveries. At least 18 LNG tankers are now involved, including new Russian vessels such as Aleksey Kosygin and Konstantin Posiet. Other ships are considerably older and were apparently purchased specifically for these transports. Even the Arctic Metagaz tanker, badly damaged in a drone attack in the Mediterranean in March, was part of this fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arctic LNG 2 has been under international sanctions since 2023, as have parts of its infrastructure and several vessels. That has not stopped Moscow. Production and exports continue, with floating storage facilities off the Kola Peninsula and Kamchatka providing additional logistical support. At the same time, new ships are being built, with Sergey Witte and Viktor Chernomyrdin scheduled to enter service in 2026 and 2027. Russia is building its own transport chain for liquefied natural gas, designed to rely as little as possible on Western ports and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The timing is obviously no coincidence. On January 1, 2027, the EU's full ban on Russian liquefied natural gas is scheduled to take effect. Yamal LNG will then also be affected, although unlike Arctic LNG 2, it is not currently under sanctions itself. Moscow is therefore turning its attention even more toward China. The less Europe buys, the more important Beihai becomes. The math is simple: Europe shuts the door, Russia puts more ships in the water, China keeps the exports moving. Sanctions make the business harder, but so far they have not stopped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICE arrested nearly 50,000 people in July alone, more than in any other month since Trump's return to the White House. There were 49,571 arrests, 15 percent more than in June and around 70 percent more than in February. The large, publicly staged raids in Chicago, Los Angeles, or Minneapolis have become less common, but the hunt itself has not. It has simply become quieter and is now reaching deeper and deeper into ordinary daily life. People are being picked up during traffic stops, local police departments are taking over duties for immigration enforcement, protections are being stripped away, and those affected are then arrested. State and local police alone handed around 6,500 people over to ICE in July, roughly 13 percent of all arrests. A year earlier, their share was still below 5 percent. Texas and Florida together accounted for nearly 20,000 arrests and have become major helpers in Trump's mass deportation policy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can barely keep up with the work anymore. The courts are now in a state of emergency as well, because the sheer number of arrests keeps producing new hearings, and even getting a hearing scheduled becomes a fight. What is especially bad is that detainees are sometimes deported before a hearing even takes place, or moved across the United States to other facilities. That costs you not only time, but often direct access to the person as well. At ICE, identification runs through what is known as the A-Number, short for Alien Registration Number. It usually consists of 7 to 9 digits and is the central identification number for a person in the U.S. immigration system. Without that number, it becomes considerably harder to properly identify a detainee at all and get a hearing moving. By the time you figure out where someone has been taken, the next transfer may already have happened. Every single case turns into a race against time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This becomes especially clear with the so-called 287(g) agreements, which allow local police departments to effectively take over parts of ICE's work. In Key West, a 36-year-old asylum seeker from Haiti was recently caught up in it. He had fled to the United States in 2017 after receiving death threats. His employer described him as a family man, an excellent employee, and someone who had never had trouble with the law. Police arrested him and turned him over to ICE. That does not fit very well with the administration's claim that its operations are aimed mainly at criminals. More than half of those arrested in July had neither been convicted of a crime nor even been charged with one. Fewer than one in four had a criminal conviction. Half were not taken from prisons or police custody, but arrested directly out in the community. Even people with valid work permits and asylum cases that are still pending are now getting swept up in these operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had promised during his hearing to keep ICE out of the headlines. He has succeeded, if what that means is fewer spectacular videos of officers jumping out of moving vans or rappelling from helicopters onto rooftops. There is no sign of restraint when it comes to arrests. Before Trump took office, the monthly number was just over 8,000. In July, it was nearly 50,000. The administration has poured billions into ICE while at the same time loosening the rules governing whom the agency can arrest and where. The images have become quieter, the machine is running faster. And more and more often, it is hitting people who have absolutely nothing to do with the supposed fight against dangerous criminals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese hackers put AI to work - Number of attacks more than doubles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Hackers linked to China have sharply stepped up their attacks after integrating DeepSeek and other freely available AI models into their operations. Since they started handing routine work over to artificial intelligence, the number of attacks they carry out has more than doubled, according to a report by the Taiwanese research firm TeamT5. The systems are no longer handling just the grunt work. They help scout potential targets, search for vulnerabilities, suggest ways around security protections, and are sometimes even used to develop complex malware. DeepSeek models appeared particularly often, apparently also because they are cheap to use. More powerful systems such as Moonshot's Kimi K3 have not been observed so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is not limited entirely to Chinese models. Analysts also found evidence that hackers were using American AI services. In one case, hackers broke into the computers of an unnamed think tank, copied an employee's local Signal database, and then asked ChatGPT to help them build a software module to decrypt it. Claude Code was used as well. It is not always possible to determine which AI model is behind an attack. What is clear is that artificial intelligence is now being built directly into several parts of the attackers' work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China-linked groups had already broken into Taiwanese government systems before. In those attacks, AI agents were used that independently searched for vulnerabilities, attempted to break into systems, and changed their approach when one route failed. That does not turn AI into an independent hacker, but it does make it a tool that allows people to work faster and launch far more attempts at the same time. The numbers now show that pretty clearly: where more manual work used to be necessary, part of the operation now keeps running automatically - and the number of attacks is going up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15 years in prison for a 70-year-old woman - because she allegedly sent money to Ukraine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Russian-controlled Regional Court of the Zaporizhzhia Region had already sentenced 70-year-old Svitlana Loi to 15 years in a prison colony on February 10 for high treason. We reported on the case at the time. The current appeal was then heard by the First Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction in Moscow. That court upheld the sentence. Seventy-year-old Svitlana Loi from the Zaporizhzhia region now has to spend 15 years in a prison colony. The absurd accusation is high treason. For months now, dozens of such inhumane sentences have been handed down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between January and November 2024, she is alleged to have made a total of 24 transfers through a Ukrainian banking app in support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Altogether, the transfers amounted to the equivalent of 63,420 rubles. The court provided no further details about the payments. The Russian-controlled Regional Court in Zaporizhzhia had already convicted the pensioner on February 10 under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code. Now a Moscow appeals court has upheld the sentence. The appeal was heard behind closed doors, with journalists and members of the public allowed into the courtroom only for the announcement of the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just before the judge began reading the decision, Loi started singing. \"\u0420\u0456\u0434\u043d\u0430 \u043c\u0430\u0442\u0438 \u043c\u043e\u044f,\" \"My Dear Mother,\" a Ukrainian song based on a poem by Andriy Malyshko, known from the 1958 Soviet film \"The Young Years.\" Apparently, there was not much else left for her in that courtroom. The first trial had taken just a single hearing. An earlier scheduled hearing did not take place because, for reasons that remain unknown, Loi could not be brought to court. The court's statement also said that the pensioner held \"anti-Russian views.\" That sentence alone says quite a lot about what was being tried in this case besides the money transfers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loi received Russian citizenship in December 2023 while also keeping her Ukrainian citizenship. The court even held it against her that she continued receiving a Ukrainian pension while also applying for a Russian one. For the equivalent of a few hundred euros in support for the Ukrainian military, a 70-year-old woman is now supposed to spend 15 years of her life in a prison colony. Russia calls that high treason. Before the sentence was announced, she sang a Ukrainian song. She really did not need to say anything more about this trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran and Oman look for a way through Hormuz - while Washington keeps up the pressure<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Iran and Oman have resumed talks over the Strait of Hormuz and are discussing a temporary joint shipping corridor. Before the war, around one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through this waterway. Since February, a large part of that traffic has collapsed. The two countries want to clear a limited corridor and remove mines from it. Trump, meanwhile, once again claimed that all mines had already been cleared. The situation tells a different story: on Tuesday, an oil tanker around 17 kilometers northeast of Ash Shishah at the entrance to the strait was hit by an unidentified projectile and disabled. Fighting between the United States and Iran has eased considerably, but a peace agreement is still nowhere in sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Washington is trying to strangle Tehran economically. The United States is threatening countries with penalties if they continue doing business with Iran, although it does not plan to impose those sanctions immediately. Iran calls it \"gross lawlessness\" and believes many countries will refuse to join the pressure campaign. Oil prices still fell for a second straight day. Washington is also beginning to send personnel back to some embassies in the Middle East that had previously been evacuated or reduced in size, an indication that the administration does not expect another major escalation in the immediate future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Iranian state television aired a three-minute segment discussing a possible assassination of Barron Trump. It claimed that the 20-year-old was being watched and that a $10 million bounty had allegedly been offered for his killing. The U.S. Secret Service confirmed that it was aware of the broadcast. Meanwhile, support for the war in the United States continues to fall, as does Trump's own popularity ahead of the congressional elections in November. Thousands of people have already died, most of them in Iran and Lebanon. Iran's conventional armed forces have been badly damaged, while Washington still knows surprisingly little about the actual condition of the country's nuclear program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
