There are words that make something sound smaller than it is, and \u201cclimate change\u201d is the friendliest of them all. It sounds like seasons, like a mild transition, like something you can endure. What it really means is a war humanity is waging against its own planet, and we should be talking about climate catastrophe or climate hell. Anyone who describes it this gently has already half given up on winning it. To call something by the wrong name means no longer seeing it for what it is. Language is not a piece of clothing you throw over an event, but the lens through which you recognize it. A soft word strips something of its urgency, and what does not sound urgent does not get dealt with. In the end, the term does not protect us, but what is destroying us. That is exactly why the fight over the right word is not a fight over vocabulary, but the first step in any resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the situation without sugarcoating it. The United States, which still considers itself the greatest power on Earth, even though that role may long since have passed to China, is in the middle of the most dangerous global conflict there has ever been, while at the same time continuing its old wars as though it had all the time in the world. Every war burns through fossil fuels and, with its exhaust, heats up the very planet whose habitability is supposedly at stake. The obvious thought, to stop shooting at each other for at least a while as the Earth burns, remains unthought. This would be the moment when reason could show itself. But the history of humanity is one long chain of wars, each darker than the one before it, and nothing suggests that chain is breaking in our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, the world from Europe to America was more literally in flames than ever, through wars as well as the continuing assault on nature. Of all years, this was the one in which Americans sent a man to the White House for a second time who resembles a flamethrower more than a firefighter. The fact that nearly half voted for him, 46.4 percent in 2016 and 49.8 percent in 2024, shows that this collapse had begun long before him. He is not the cause, he is its most glaring result. A people does not elect an arsonist unless it has already been flirting with fire. The numbers are no accident, they tell us something about a condition that existed long before the election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe is warming about twice as fast as the rest of the world. Just recently, more than 300,000 people in France and Spain were driven from their homes by heat and extraordinary wildfires. At the same time, the war between Russia and Ukraine keeps grinding on, and out of it has grown a new kind of warfare, the fight with drones. War is reinventing itself while the Earth forgets how to carry its inhabitants. Fighting continues in Somalia and Sudan as well, while in the Middle East Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushes his war forward, backed by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That same Trump recently unleashed yet another war of his own, almost out of nowhere, against Iran. It is a peculiar kind of insanity: A power that has not really won any of its wars since World War II opens the next one thousands of miles away. This country learns little from the past, it prefers to repeat it. It spends around $1 trillion a year on its military, and the president wants to drive that figure up to $1.5 trillion. You could say he is not building a monument to victory in Washington, but the largest arch of defeat the world has ever seen. Every trillion that flows into destruction is missing where it could still be used to cool the planet. This is not a question of money, but of direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is, in fact, nothing repetitive about Trump. A country that once elected Lincoln and Roosevelt all the way through Kennedy, with a few paler names on that list as well, has completely rewritten the script with him, even if in the darkest way imaginable. He is proof that we can change the script, and at the same time a warning of where that freedom leads when it is left without limits. He is a walking climate catastrophe at the head of a country in decline, on a planet whose own decline was long considered unthinkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where this leads is easy to imagine. If nothing unexpected happens, one day we could all end up like those 300,000, a new kind of displaced people with nowhere to flee, unless someone like Elon Musk really does end up colonizing Mars after all. What our grandchildren will think about the fact that nearly 50 percent made him the planet-destroyer-in-chief twice is not hard to imagine. Probably with the same head-shaking every generation reserves for the blindness of the one before it, except that this time the bill may no longer be payable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And this is where the sugarcoating ends, or where it should end. When the powerful wrap catastrophe in a gentle word, only one force remains that can replace the wrong word with the right one: a press that checks and names what has to be named. It does not win elections and it does not bring down governments, but it keeps open the language through which a society thinks about itself. The fact that so many people under 25 are becoming quieter about climate change is a bitter irony. They will still be alive when today\u2019s heads of government are long gone, when scorching summers have become normal, when entire regions are fighting over water and insurers, agriculture, and cities are reaching limits that today are still treated like some distant future. Of course rent, war, education, prices, and jobs hit immediately - but that is exactly where the trap lies: climate disappears from view because other worries are screaming louder, while in the background something is changing that cannot simply be reversed later. Anyone who is 20 today cannot count on some future government to fix it all. And anyone who stops politically defending their own future hands it over to people who, in twenty or thirty years, will no longer personally experience many of the consequences. That is not cool, not pragmatic, and certainly not rebellious. It is damn dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigative journalism in 2026 may be one of the last bastions from which anything can still be changed at all. Not because it wins wars, but because it refuses to give them pretty names. At a time when the ranks of those who still check the facts are getting thinner, the weight carried by the few who remain grows heavier. Anyone who investigates what is happening, names the perpetrators, and stands against them in the open has not won the fight yet, but has stopped losing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
