It\u2019s incredibly sad that, in 2026, we once again have to make room in our magazine for reports from the front lines. And at some point, you can\u2019t help but ask yourself: What the hell has happened to this world? All you have to do is look around. We can say for ourselves that we haven\u2019t experienced much of this from a safe distance. We\u2019ve been in Iran, Ukraine, at CECOT in El Salvador, in Venezuela, in southern Mexico, and right in the middle of the intense clashes surrounding ICE in the United States. We\u2019ve seen firsthand what political decisions do to people on the ground, and how quickly words can turn into something very real - and what hatred and right-wing populism can bring out in people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe that is why one question has been weighing on us more and more: What happened that politics and society have grown so far apart? That war is once again part of the daily news, violence increasingly seems normal, and political camps can barely talk to each other anymore without declaring the other side the enemy. In 2026, we would much rather have reported in detail on other things than which army captured which village, how far a drone can fly, how innocent people are simply locked away, how people in the United States have been killed by ICE for no reason, and how many people were killed or injured by missiles and bombs in a single night. But this is exactly the world we have to report on right now. And as long as people live, fight, flee, and die there, we will not pretend that a report from the front is just a collection of lines on a map or a detention number. There are people living behind every one of those lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump Rejects Iran's Demand for War Reparations - and Presents His Own Bill<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump is rejecting Iran's demand for compensation for the devastation caused by American and Israeli bombardments over the past five months and is responding with a counter-demand. The U.S. president said Tehran's negotiators had not raised such a demand during previous talks. Now it apparently is going to become part of the negotiations after all, but Trump is already making clear that Washington has no intention of going along with it. Instead, he instructed American negotiators to demand compensation from Iran - for people who, according to him, were killed or seriously wounded by Iranian roadside bombs and in numerous conflicts. That puts yet another bill on the table alongside negotiations that were already difficult enough, with both sides now demanding money for dead and wounded from completely different decades and wars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. government has long blamed Iran-backed groups for the deaths and injuries of hundreds of Americans. Washington points, among other things, to the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine compound in Beirut, which killed 241 American service members. Then there was the 1996 truck bombing of a U.S. Air Force housing complex in Saudi Arabia, which killed 19 U.S. troops and wounded hundreds more. The Iraq War weighs particularly heavily for Washington: According to the U.S. government, at least 603 American troops were killed by Iran-backed forces between 2003 and 2011. Trump now wants to bring this decades-old bill directly into the current negotiations. Iran is demanding compensation for the destruction of the past five months, while Washington is answering with demands over American deaths and serious injuries from earlier conflicts. At the very moment when both sides are trying to negotiate a political solution with Tehran, another dispute has been added, one in which even the question of who owes whom anything at all leaves the two sides far apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Current Front Report: Russia Advances Toward Sloviansk - the Drone War Reaches a New Dimension<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Russian troops are moving closer to Sloviansk from the east, while fighting is intensifying across several sections of the front at the same time and the drone war has long since reached distances that would have seemed almost impossible just months ago. East of Sloviansk, the territory controlled by Russia south of Kalenyky has expanded. Russian military channels report the capture of Rai-Oleksandrivka, positions in Piskunivka, and fighting for Malynivka, but the situation remains disputed in some areas. DeepState continues to show Malynivka and almost all of Rai-Oleksandrivka as contested territory and Piskunivka under Ukrainian control. Even the Russian claim that Vasiutynske has been captured is being disputed by pro-Russian sources. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are other signs that Russian forces are getting closer to Sloviansk: Russian fiber-optic-controlled FPV drones are now attacking vehicles inside the city itself. In the Pokrovsk sector, analysts say these drones are already being used at ranges of up to 50 kilometers. The fiber-optic connection makes them largely immune to conventional radio jamming and changes the distance at which vehicles, supply lines, and soldiers can be put at risk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine is now also demonstrating its own fiber-optic drones with a range of 50 kilometers. Near Kostiantynivka, the fighting has moved farther toward the line between the city and Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka. According to DeepState, Russian troops advanced in Illinivka and Chasiv Yar, while fighting has been reported in Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka. In the Pokrovsk sector, Rodynske is said to have been completely occupied by Russian troops after nearly a year of heavy fighting. According to one observer, the city was almost completely destroyed by Russian airstrikes, while Russian units are also said to have suffered heavy losses. Farther south, the situation around Mala Tokmachka and Orikhiv remains unclear. An initial report claiming a Russian breakthrough to the southeastern edge of Orikhiv turned out, according to research, to be a false report by Russian military blogger Anatoly Radov, who later admitted himself that he had made up the information. As if these times were not bad enough already. He did not retract his claim that Mala Tokmachka had been captured, but here too, research cannot confirm complete Russian control. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radov has repeatedly attracted attention for disputed and unconfirmed reports from the front. In the case of Orikhiv, he went even further and later admitted himself that he had made up the report he circulated. What is also interesting is that he himself describes how false information spreads: One person makes something up, others simply copy it. So the problem is well known, and yet many people continue to share his information.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While fighting continues over individual towns and villages on the ground, the number of air attacks on both sides has reached enormous levels. During the nights of August 8 through 10 alone, Russia launched hundreds of drones as well as ballistic missiles and other weapons against Ukraine. Four people were killed in Kyiv and the surrounding region on the night of August 8. In Pukhivka, a grandmother, a grandfather, and their three-year-old grandson were killed, while the boy's parents, his 15-year-old brother, and a neighbor were injured. In Kharkiv, a drone strike destroyed four floors of an apartment building, killing two people and injuring 37. Odesa experienced one of its heaviest attacks since the beginning of the year on the night of August 9. Dozens of missiles and drones struck the city and the surrounding region, injuring at least twelve people, damaging residential buildings and energy facilities, and temporarily knocking out electricity, water, and cell service. Ukraine's railroad system is also being systematically targeted. Within five days, 41 attacks were recorded, eleven locomotives were damaged, six railroad workers were killed, and 17 were injured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Ukraine is striking deeper and deeper inside Russia and in occupied Crimea. Refineries in Ilsky and Syzran were hit, along with Russian air defense positions near Gelendzhik. Ukrainian military intelligence reported the destruction of two S-400 launchers in Crimea, although Russian reports claimed that one of them was only a decoy. Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan was hit particularly hard on August 10. According to local authorities, 13 people were killed in the drone attacks, including a child, and another 75 people were injured. The Ukrainian General Staff said the TANECO refinery operated by Tatneft was the target of the attack. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day earlier, Belgorod suffered its deadliest and most destructive drone attack since 2024. Six people were killed and 25 injured, including two children. Homes, stores, public facilities, and numerous vehicles were damaged. Russia, for its part, reported intercepting well over 1,800 Ukrainian drones across numerous regions between August 7 and 10 alone. At the same time, according to Ukrainian OSINT assessments, shipping traffic in the Sea of Azov has collapsed by around 90 percent within a single month, falling from 134 tankers and cargo ships on July 6 to just 14 on August 7. Russia's supply lines on land are also under constant attack. Since the beginning of August, at least 167 Russian trucks and other vehicles are said to have been hit in occupied territories. Despite jammers, interceptor drones, and armed escorts, more vehicles are being attacked every day. Even new defensive technology only partly solves the problem. A Russian tank equipped with the Arena-M active protection system reportedly shot down seven attacking drones before it was eventually hit. According to the Ukrainian soldiers involved, it took 15 to 20 drones to destroy each such tank. At the same time, Russia continues to expand its drone forces and has established dedicated unmanned-systems regiments in all three armies of its Center Group of Forces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia is also maintaining the pace when it comes to personnel. Economist Janis Kluge estimates that around 93,000 new contract soldiers were recruited in the second quarter, roughly 1,000 per day. For the full year, the Kremlin and Defense Ministry are said to have given Russia's regions a target of 409,000 new soldiers. Ukraine, meanwhile, is trying to strengthen its air defenses against the growing number of Russian attacks. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he had reached an agreement with the United States for monthly deliveries of air defense missiles for the Patriot systems, while admitting at the same time that even those quantities would not be enough. Finland does not want to give up any of its own Patriot missiles because, according to its defense minister, doing so would put the country's own security at risk. Washington, meanwhile, is prepared to approve a major Turkish sale to Ukraine, including twelve M270 multiple-launch rocket systems, 70 ATACMS ballistic missiles, thousands of rockets, and tens of thousands of artillery rounds containing cluster munitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elon Musk, on the other hand, continues to refuse to allow Ukraine to use Starlink for strikes deep inside internationally recognized Russian territory. He says doing so would risk further escalation and is calling for a peace agreement. While that debate continues, Russian soldiers keep moving toward Sloviansk, both sides are striking farther and farther behind the actual front, and a war fought over kilometers has also become a war in which a fiber-optic drone can chase a vehicle from as far as 50 kilometers away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran Threatened Trump in Turkey - President Was Smuggled Out of Ankara Hidden in a Catering Cart<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What Donald Trump presented after the NATO summit in Turkey as an almost routine switch of presidential aircraft was actually a secret escape operation prompted by what was considered a credible Iranian threat. According to a senior U.S. official, the threat was directed at Trump himself and at the aircraft he was supposed to use to leave the country. The president had traveled to Turkey aboard the Boeing 747-8 donated by Qatar and since converted for presidential travel. Trump then publicly said that, for old times' sake, he would take one of the older presidential aircraft for the flight out. In reality, that story was part of a deliberate deception. The Qatari Boeing flew ahead to a U.S. military base in the United Kingdom. In front of cameras at the airport in Ankara, Trump then boarded the older blue-and-white aircraft, but he did not leave on that plane either. Instead, the president was hidden inside a catering cart that had been brought up to the lower section of the aircraft. Trump was secretly taken away from the plane that way, then driven by car to a third aircraft and flown covertly to the United Kingdom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to reports, that aircraft was a C-32A, the military version of a Boeing 757. Even the reporters traveling with Trump were deliberately left believing that he was aboard the older presidential aircraft, which in reality was being used only as a decoy. Communications Director Steven Cheung later said that, given the enemies who had Trump in their sights, the United States was using every tool available, explicitly including distraction and misdirection. The threat was not specifically aimed at the Boeing donated by Qatar. According to the available information, Trump was to be targeted regardless of which aircraft he used. How seriously Washington took the Iranian threat is shown less by any statement from the White House than by the lengths taken during this operation: A president of the United States was put on a plane in full view of the public during a NATO summit, secretly taken back off, hidden in a catering cart, and flown out of the country aboard a third aircraft while the world was supposed to believe he was already sitting aboard Air Force One.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"My Heart Stopped\" - Diver Finds 2,000-Year-Old Treasure on the Seafloor off Sicily<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Giacomo de Mola had actually set out for nothing more than a routine dive off the coast of Sicily, but then the Italian diver and spearfishing champion discovered something at a depth of around 45 meters that even Italy's Culture Ministry now describes as one of the most significant underwater finds of recent years. About five kilometers off Mazara del Vallo in southwestern Sicily, de Mola's sonar picked up a structure that he initially thought was a rock. Visibility underwater was poor, but he kept diving down and suddenly found himself facing hundreds of ancient amphorae. \"My heart stopped,\" he later said, describing the moment. In front of him was an enormous pile of ancient clay vessels, many of them apparently still completely intact, spread across an area measuring roughly two by 21 meters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

De Mola called it a \"treasure on the seafloor\" and contacted an expert, who in turn brought in the Sicilian authorities. Their specialists soon confirmed that the diver had indeed discovered the remains of an ancient ship. According to Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, the ship most likely sank around 2,000 years ago, sometime between the second and first centuries B.C., during the Roman era. Alongside the hundreds of amphorae, two lead parts from ancient anchors were discovered. The shape of most of the vessels, with their narrow, pointed bottoms, shows that they were designed for transportation aboard ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Such amphorae were used throughout the ancient Mediterranean to transport olives, oil, wine, honey, grain, and other goods over long distances. Italian authorities now plan to fully document, examine, and protect the site. They hope the position of the vessels and the other remains will allow them to reconstruct where the ship came from, what goods it was carrying, and which trade route it was following before it sank off Sicily two thousand years ago. What ended in disaster for the crew and merchants back then is now lying almost completely preserved on the seafloor - discovered by a diver who had not been looking for a Roman shipwreck at all that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zuckerberg's Fairy Tale Hour Promises AI for Everyone - While Meta Burns Billions and Opposition to Its Data Centers Grows<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Mark Zuckerberg desperately needs a new story for Meta's AI business, because the company is behind Anthropic and OpenAI when it comes to the most powerful models, investors are getting nervous about the gigantic spending, and opposition to ever more data centers is growing across the United States. Zuckerberg is now answering all of that with a 6,500-word essay and, of all companies, presents Meta as the one that wants to distribute artificial intelligence as widely as possible and strengthen the interests of individuals against large institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man whose company controls Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp warns that other AI companies are developing primarily for corporations, governments, and institutions, which could increase their influence over individual people. Meta, by contrast, has focused since its founding on giving people more control, Zuckerberg writes. Given the history of this company and its current practices, that is something worth reading twice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, Meta plans to release more AI models whose crucial technical data will be freely available and can be downloaded by developers and used for their own applications. The new Muse Glimmer model is supposed to be released that way, with an open version of its most powerful model so far, Muse Spark 1.2, set to follow in the coming weeks. Users would be able to download the numerical values that determine how the models behave. Zuckerberg is also calling for developers to be allowed to use models from other companies through what is known as distillation to train their own systems. On safety, he wants Meta's board of directors to have a greater say in deciding which standards apply to the company's own models. At the same time, Zuckerberg claims that his own approach is precisely the one most likely to prevent dangers such as totalitarian control, mass unemployment, or a superintelligence that can no longer be controlled. While these enormous promises are being written down, there is an equally enormous bill sitting underneath them. Meta plans to spend as much as $145 billion this year alone, mostly on data centers, with spending expected to reach $600 billion by 2028. At the same time, more and more communities are pushing back against the enormous amounts of land, energy, and water these facilities require, and New York has even halted construction of major new data centers for up to a year. Zuckerberg is now responding with money, announcing a $1 billion fund for communities near Meta data centers. How exactly that money will be distributed remains unclear. As an example, he points to Louisiana, where teachers received $50,000 bonuses thanks to additional tax revenue generated around the massive Hyperion data center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sounds generous, but compared with Meta's planned investments, it costs the company relatively little. One billion dollars for affected communities stands against $600 billion in planned spending through 2028. And while Zuckerberg promises a better AI future for everyone, his own investors are slowly losing patience. Meta has to show how these enormous expenditures are finally going to generate corresponding revenue. Zuckerberg recently even floated the idea of launching its own computing-power business, but provided few details during the company's earnings presentation - and the stock was sold off afterward. So behind 6,500 words about openness, safety, and a better future sits a much more uncomfortable present: Meta is behind, is investing hundreds of billions of dollars, is facing growing opposition to its data centers, and has to explain to shareholders when all of this is finally going to pay off. China Opens the \"Ice Silk Road\" - Cargo Ships Could Reach Europe Through the Arctic in Half the Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

China is turning what until now has been a rarely used route through the Arctic into a regular freight connection to Europe. Chinese shipping company Sea Legend plans to launch the first regular cargo service through the Arctic this week. Once a week, a ship is expected to sail from the eastern Chinese port of Ningbo to Felixstowe in the United Kingdom. The connection is being called the \"Ice Silk Road\" and could dramatically cut the current transportation time between the two ports. On the usual shipping routes, the journey takes about 40 days. Through the Arctic, it is expected to take only about half as long. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a very practical reason China is expanding this route right now. Sailing through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait has become dangerous. The Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen declared a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia in July and threatened shipowners with attacks on vessels calling at Saudi ports. After several attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, traffic by ships carrying raw materials through Bab el-Mandeb fell in late July to its lowest level in several months. Anyone trying to avoid the area has often had to take the considerably longer route around the Cape of Good Hope and therefore around Africa. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arctic now offers China a route that not only avoids those dangers but could also get cargo to Europe much faster. It becomes possible during the summer months as the ice melts, allowing ships to travel parts of the route without icebreaker assistance. Last summer, 23 voyages were already recorded along the Northern Sea Route, up from 15 in 2024. Now, for the first time, that is being turned into a regular cargo service. China's new connection, however, cannot operate without Russia. The Northern Sea Route is divided into 28 sections, each with its own regulations. Route planning and transit permits are handled by the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route, which is part of Russia's state-owned Rosatom corporation. China may now be able to cut weeks off its sea route to Europe and bypass an increasingly dangerous route through the Middle East - while running a crucial part of its new trade route through an Arctic passage whose use is controlled by Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
