ICE Wants to Equip Every Officer With Body Cameras - But the Agency Itself Decides What Happens to the Footage<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

By the end of August, every ICE officer and agent working in the field is supposed to be wearing a body camera. The immigration agency is moving quickly to expand the program, which could for the first time put large parts of its operations on video. But when it comes to serious injuries or deaths, there is still no guarantee the public will ever get to see that footage. ICE rules allow agency leadership to withhold recordings or delay their release indefinitely. One provision is drawing particular attention: footage involving serious injuries or deaths can be released on an expedited basis when doing so is considered to be in the \"best interests of the agency.\" <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acting ICE Director David J. Venturella is defending the policy, saying it is meant to protect ongoing investigations and privacy and is consistent with federal law and the policies of other federal agencies. At the same time, he is accusing journalists of misrepresenting the rules. ICE, he says, is committed to transparency and accountability. But Venturella is wrong about that. Our own reporting established that officers, including those in Biddeford, were wearing cameras when they shot and killed a man there. They just weren't allowed to turn those cameras on. Think about what that actually looks like. A government officer is wearing a camera on his chest with its eye covered by a cap while his gun works just fine. The reason for that covered lens lies in a second contract. The Department of Homeland Security does not get its body cameras from Motorola, but through an agreement with Axon, a police technology company. So officers have a device that could record video, but they are not allowed to use it as a camera because the actual camera is supposed to come from another supplier. A man is dead, and there is no video of what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The debate comes after two fatal encounters where the exact footage that is now supposed to provide transparency simply does not exist. In July, an ICE officer in Maine shot and killed a 25-year-old driver. Just days earlier, a homebuilder in Houston was shot and killed by another ICE officer while driving to work. Neither shooting was recorded on a body camera. Canadian sociology professor Christopher Schneider points out that other law enforcement agencies also selectively release footage, but that such discretion is rarely spelled out this openly in their own policies. His description gets pretty close to what this fight is about: ICE is basically saying out loud what usually stays quiet. And body cameras alone don't guarantee public access, as ICE's sister agency, Customs and Border Protection, has already shown. Footage exists of the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis in January, but it still has not been released. CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott told lawmakers the footage is part of an investigation and will be made public \"when it's appropriate.\" By the end of August, cameras could be running everywhere. But the crucial question remains exactly the same: Who controls the footage when it becomes uncomfortable for ICE?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened at Leipzig\/Halle Airport on the night of August 5 could have ended with someone dead, an aircraft destroyed, or far worse. According to U.S. intelligence agencies, one of Russia's intelligence services was behind the explosive-laden drone discovered at Leipzig\/Halle Airport. Russia has several intelligence and security services, including the GRU military intelligence service and the SVR foreign intelligence service. U.S. authorities have not publicly disclosed which one they specifically suspect or what intelligence their assessment is based on. The German government has so far not officially blamed Russia for the incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German government has so far not officially blamed Russia, but Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has described the incident as a \"hybrid attack\" that may have involved foreign forces. The low-flying drone was spotted, of all people, by an airport bus driver. The man kicked the aircraft and knocked it to the ground. It was an extremely dangerous move, but one that may have prevented an attack. The drone was inside the airport's restricted area, right next to four cargo aircraft belonging to Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. According to an internal police report, one of the An-124 aircraft parked nearby was loaded with ammunition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investigators are still trying to determine which aircraft or area was actually supposed to be hit. Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office believes the drone was intended to explode. It was carrying professional-grade explosives and a detonator. According to German media reports, the explosion apparently failed only because the detonator became detached from the explosive charge attached to the drone. But the incident did not end there. After a runway was closed, a DHL cargo plane aborted its landing approach and collided in midair with an unknown object. Investigators believe that object may also have been a drone. The aircraft suffered minor damage and later landed safely in Hanover. No one was injured. Leipzig\/Halle is of major importance to NATO because the airport is the primary hub for the SALIS program, under which An-124 cargo aircraft transport equipment to reinforce NATO's eastern member states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 2024, a package containing an explosive device caught fire at the DHL logistics center at the same airport. It had been intended for loading onto an aircraft. Lithuanian investigators later linked a series of similar packages to Russian military intelligence, and 15 suspected participants were charged. There have also been recent reports of an alleged plot by Russian intelligence services to assassinate the head of German drone manufacturer Donaustahl, which supplies drones to Ukraine. The Russian Embassy in Berlin rejects the allegations, calling the Leipzig incident a \"hastily cobbled-together provocation\" and accusing Germany of fueling \"anti-Russian hysteria.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A case involving sewage in a Tennessee creek and a fight over Elon Musk's gas turbines near Memphis could ultimately decide whether individuals, organizations, and local governments in the United States will still be allowed to sue over violations of federal law themselves. That decades-old right is now under attack from conservative lawyers, companies, and Musk's xAI, and the Trump administration is siding with them. Their argument reaches far beyond environmental law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under that view, only the president and federal agencies should decide how a federal law is enforced, or whether a violation is pursued at all. Congress, they argue, should never have given citizens that right in the first place. But these citizen suits have been written into major environmental laws for decades because Washington doesn't have the personnel, or always the willingness, to pursue every violation itself, and sometimes the government itself is among those responsible. These lawsuits have resulted in millions of dollars in penalties against heavily polluting oil and gas operations, and after the Flint water crisis, they also helped force the removal of lead pipes. The plaintiffs don't pocket those fines themselves. The money goes to the U.S. Treasury. The government also has to be notified before a lawsuit is filed and can step in itself. Four federal cases are now underway challenging this right. One of them involves Springfield, north of Nashville. Tennessee Riverkeeper accuses the city of allowing too much sewage from its treatment plant to flow into a nearby creek, violating the Clean Water Act. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our investigations paint a picture that is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for xAI. Speed is being placed above caution, while environmental and safety concerns are being pushed to the margins. Also under scrutiny are the emissions control systems being used and the operational practices in Southaven, Mississippi. The discussion reaches far beyond technical issues. Fine particulate matter can settle in air and soil and has been linked to cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses. Gas turbines release carbon dioxide and contribute to global warming. Added to this are potential methane leaks during the extraction and transportation of natural gas, which can have stronger short-term climate effects than CO\u2082. Also being discussed are impacts on air quality in residential areas, high water consumption for cooling systems, constant noise, and additional pressure on power grids and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The conservative Pacific Legal Foundation took over the defense and turned the case into a constitutional fight. Its argument is that a private organization of unelected activists should not be able to repeatedly force others to spend resources defending themselves against such lawsuits. The second case is even bigger because Elon Musk and the Trump administration are directly involved. The civil rights organization NAACP accuses Musk's xAI of operating dozens of gas turbines near Memphis without first obtaining permits to power a data center. The group says pollution from the turbines threatens people living nearby, many of whom are Black. The NAACP wants the turbines to remain shut down until the company complies with the law. xAI wants the lawsuit gone, and the Trump administration is helping. The Justice Department argues that cutting off power for artificial intelligence that supports the Department of War could harm national security. Because the government itself does not want the lawsuit to proceed, it argues that the NAACP should not be allowed to pursue it either. Laura Thoms of Earthjustice, which represents the NAACP, counters that governments traditionally stepped into cases like this to enforce laws, not to allow a company to keep operating despite a possible violation. What makes the attack on this right to sue particularly dangerous is today's Supreme Court. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in 2000, Justice Anthony Kennedy raised doubts about whether citizen suits improperly restrict executive authority. Antonin Scalia went even further at the time, writing that they hand private citizens the job of enforcing the law. Today, the Court is more conservative than it was during Scalia's lifetime. Harvard professor Richard Lazarus says lawyers in this field have essentially been waiting 26 years for this fight to return. Opponents first need to win in lower courts and preferably produce conflicting rulings among federal appeals courts before the Supreme Court is likely to take up the issue. The consequences would be significant, especially now. The Trump administration has rolled back air and water protections, promoted fossil fuels, and limited enforcement of environmental violations that could slow energy projects to particularly serious cases. Many states also have less money for enforcement. If citizens also lose the right to go to court themselves, the government will ultimately decide which violations get pursued and which ones don't. Thoms even warns that a president could effectively leave laws unenforced to benefit friends. Poor communities and areas with large minority populations in states with weak environmental protections would be hit especially hard. Law professor David Adelman once would have given a challenge like this almost no chance of succeeding. With today's Supreme Court, he sees it differently. The Court has protected executive control over the enforcement of federal law so strongly that success can no longer be ruled out. A president would not even have to repeal an environmental law. It could remain right there in the law books while the very people trying to enforce it lose their right to go to court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Next Right-Wing Government - Trump Gets an Ally in Colombia and Washington Hands Over a Billion Dollars<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Abelardo de la Espriella has barely taken office as Colombia's president, and the United States has already announced roughly $1 billion in support for his government. The new president was sworn in Friday in Cali and will lead the country through 2030. De la Espriella is on the far right politically, calls himself \"El Tigre,\" the Tiger, and narrowly defeated left-wing Senator Iv\u00e1n Cepeda in a runoff election at the end of June. The lawyer enters the country's highest office with no experience in elected government and campaigned on cracking down harder on criminal groups, lowering taxes, and reviving the oil and gas industry. Donald Trump openly backed his candidacy, and a White House delegation attended his inauguration. De la Espriella then left little doubt about where things are headed: Colombia will work with Washington \"like never before.\" <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The money from the United States is primarily intended for security programs. Colombia is also joining the Trump-founded South American security partnership \"Shield of the Americas\" and is supposed to gain access to advanced American technology for fighting crime. At the same time, the U.S. military and Colombian security forces are expected to work more closely together to combat illegal migration and drug trafficking. This also marks the end, in foreign policy terms, of the Gustavo Petro era. Petro had sharply criticized Trump, while Trump in turn called the Colombian president a drug lord. Petro and Cepeda had warned against this kind of rapprochement, arguing that Colombia must not become another \"vassal\" of the United States. What surfaced back in May makes this particularly explosive. Thirty-seven audio recordings that appeared online allegedly pointed to preparations for an operation against left-wing governments in Latin America, especially Mexico and Colombia. On the recordings, a man investigators identified as former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez allegedly discussed creating a media operation in the United States to run campaigns against the governments of Claudia Sheinbaum and Gustavo Petro. Hern\u00e1ndez had been pardoned by Trump after being convicted of drug trafficking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was also named as a possible financial backer of that campaign. Whether and how those recordings are connected to Colombia's later political developments has not been proven. What is happening openly now, however, is clear: Bogot\u00e1 is governed by a right-wing president backed by Trump, and immediately after he takes office, Washington is offering his new government $1 billion along with significantly closer security cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By a 50-49 Vote: Trump's Former Criminal Defense Lawyer Todd Blanche Takes Over the Justice Department<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Todd Blanche is now officially the attorney general of the United States. The Senate confirmed Donald Trump's former personal criminal defense lawyer in an overnight 50-49 vote. The Republican majority could hardly have gotten its nominee through by a narrower margin. Every Democrat voted against Blanche, along with Republicans Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The deciding vote came from Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who announced his support only on Friday. Cassidy openly said Blanche is \"not perfect,\" but another nominee under Trump would not necessarily be any better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murkowski explained her no vote by saying the country needs an attorney general who will put limits on the worst impulses of this administration. There are serious doubts that Blanche will do exactly that. After Pam Bondi was fired in April, he was already running the department in an acting capacity and pushed forward investigations into people Trump considers enemies. His confirmation still came close to collapsing because even Republican senators were unwilling to accept a controversial settlement involving the IRS. The deal included a $1.8 billion compensation fund for people who believed they had been mistreated by the criminal justice system, including Trump allies and participants in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Another part of the agreement was supposed to protect Trump and members of his family from tax audits. Only after pressure from Republican senators did Blanche promise in writing to abandon the fund and roll back those protections from tax audits as well. That cleared the way through the Senate Judiciary Committee and eventually the full Senate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blanche isn't just some Trump ally. A former federal prosecutor, he crossed to the other side of the courtroom and became one of Trump's most important defense attorneys, including in the New York hush money trial and the two federal criminal cases against Trump. After Trump returned to the White House, Blanche first became deputy attorney general under Bondi. Democrats accuse him of putting loyalty to Trump above the independence of the Justice Department. Under Bondi and Blanche, the department lost thousands of employees through firings, resignations, and voluntary departures. Shortly after Blanche took over as acting head of the department, the Justice Department also moved to indict former FBI Director James Comey over a photo of seashells arranged as \"86 47,\" which the administration interpreted as a threat against the 47th president. Comey's lawyers are seeking to have the case dismissed and accuse the department, among other things, of making false statements to judges and withholding important facts. Blanche also put Joseph diGenova, a former prosecutor from the Reagan era, in charge of an investigation in Florida examining whether former law enforcement and intelligence officials had worked together over the years to harm Trump. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether that investigation will ever result in criminal charges remains unclear. Blanche's supporters see his closeness to Trump as an advantage, arguing that the president is more likely to accept legal limits from his former lawyer than from other cabinet officials. Chuck Grassley said before the vote that Blanche had led the department with distinction and was the right choice. Whether he will actually put limits on Trump is no longer a question for his confirmation hearing. With 50 votes, the Senate has handed him control of the Justice Department, and Donald Trump has put his former criminal defense lawyer in charge of the very department Blanche was defending him against in court not long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sold in Germany Too: The Watch That's Supposed to Protect Kids Can Secretly Film Them, Listen In, and Track Their Every Move<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A cheap kids' watch strapped to someone's wrist, bought for less than $30, is enough to show just how little control parents may have over some of the devices they buy specifically to protect their children. Security researchers Vangelis Stykas and Felipe Solferini remotely took control of one such GPS watch and used it to track a journalist through New York. Even when the GPS initially wasn't working, the watch sent identifiers from nearby Wi-Fi networks to a remote server. That was enough to determine which city block the wearer was on. It continued at the office. Stykas activated the camera, photographed the journalist in the elevator and later at his desk. Then the microphone was switched on and a conversation with a coworker was transmitted. Nothing appeared on the watch. There was no warning, no indication that the camera or microphone was running. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is by no means limited to the U.S. market. Kids' smartwatches that use the SETracker or SETracker 2 platform involved in the investigation are also sold in Germany. Different brand names can hide the same Chinese platforms and servers. Whether a specific model sold in Germany contains the security vulnerabilities discovered by the researchers, however, has to be checked device by device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The device tested was made by Chinese manufacturer YiQingTeng Electronics in Shenzhen and runs on the SETracker platform. That means the real problem is much bigger than this one kids' watch. Stykas and Solferini examined more than 70 GPS watches and vehicle devices and found that a large number of supposedly different brands actually rely on just a handful of technical platforms from China. More than 30 devices use technology and servers from YiQingTeng, Wonlex, Shenzhen 3G Electronics, or SETracker, while more than 30 other brands rely on the NewGPS2012 platform. Add SinoTrack, and according to the researchers, tens of millions of GPS devices come from just three supply chains. Serious security flaws were found in all three. In some cases, adequate access controls were missing, allowing outsiders to take over devices. Attackers could track children, fake their locations, intercept and manipulate text and voice messages, replace stored emergency contacts, and secretly listen in. Devices with cameras could also provide photos and videos without anyone knowing. Vehicle trackers could likewise be used to follow locations and manipulate messages that could potentially even unlock or disable vehicles, although the researchers did not test that on actual cars. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even more serious were the vulnerabilities they found on the servers. At SinoTrack, an account that was actually intended for demonstrations gave them potential access to millions of devices. Another security flaw exposed locations, passwords, and vehicle data from tens of thousands of devices. With NewGPS2012, the researchers were able to run their own code on the company's servers and found evidence suggesting that unauthorized people may already have broken into the system before. According to the researchers, the companies had been warned for months. SETracker initially said the problems had been fixed long ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was only a few hours before the findings were presented at the Black Hat security conference that the attack methods used against SETracker suddenly stopped working. The company later said the vulnerability had been completely fixed. But the attacks against SinoTrack and NewGPS2012 were still working. What makes this especially bitter is that the problem has been known for years. There were warnings about insecure kids' watches as far back as 2017 and 2018, and in 2020, serious security problems were found in five out of six models tested. Parents see dozens of different brands in stores or online and think they're choosing between different systems. In reality, two kids' watches sold under completely different names can be sending their location data to the exact same server in China. When parents strap one of these watches onto their child's wrist, in the worst case they may not be the only ones who know where their child is. A complete stranger could know too, listen in, and watch, without the child or the parents having the slightest idea that someone else is already inside the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
