Dozens of places across the map of America have gone silent. Cafes and dry cleaners still have their stars, but the immigration detention centers don't anymore. Where people held in facilities run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, once wrote about their often harrowing experiences, Google Maps now shows nothing. Thousands of reviews are gone, without notice, without a word of explanation, and anyone trying to write a new one finds that option disabled. First a person disappears into the deportation machine, then what they had to say about it disappears too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A researcher was the one who noticed. Muira McCammon, who studies communication at Tulane University, has been collecting the accounts people left on Google Maps about their time in ICE detention since last year. Last August, she found 1,636 posts covering 26 facilities, while Google had already disabled reviews for another 91 detention centers. By now, she says, almost all the entries from 2025 have disappeared, and only 4 facilities still allow reviews at all. Deleted means deleted, permanently, and along with those entries went the detailed accounts of people who had been caught up in the machine. Google, according to her findings, is actively suppressing the traces of what happens inside these places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was erased were cries for help. Much of it came from desperate relatives and from people who had themselves been inside. One person wrote that his friend's father had served his one-month sentence and was then held at the facility for another three months, three times as long as the sentence itself. One Spanish-language review simply said that you could barely hear the detainee on the phone. Another described cockroaches crawling over people's bodies as they slept, while someone else wrote about spending two months in a hell where 99 percent of the staff were cruel and racist. One detainee described the language barrier and the lack of an interpreter, which would hardly have cost anything, along with the freezing air conditioning and the thin blanket at night. The food was edible but unappetizing, the staff were friendly, and yet hardly anyone could express their thoughts and needs because nobody shared their language. These aren't reviews in the usual sense. They're cries for help sent to an address that doesn't exist. They were directed at no one and yet at everyone, at the next person searching for the facility and wanting to know what was waiting for them inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Google points to a rule dating back to 2023. The company says it removes reviews that are unhelpful or harmful and doesn't display them for places people don't go to voluntarily, such as police stations and prisons. Some of the entries were protests that anyone could have posted, but many others came from people who had direct experience with ICE and contained information that mattered to their families. Spokesperson Genevieve Park doesn't say exactly who these accounts from inside a cell are supposedly unhelpful to. The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, denies asking for the reviews to be removed. Its spokesperson added a sentence that lingers longer than any justification. Being in detention is a choice, the spokesperson said, pointing to an app intended to encourage migrants to leave the country voluntarily. The sentence turns responsibility upside down. It isn't the state doing the locking up that's being questioned, but the person locked up, who supposedly just has to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That's how language can be turned on its head. Someone being detained supposedly chose it, and someone talking about it is considered unhelpful. A map from which the complaints have disappeared is then called clean, even though it has been scrubbed. The oldest tool of power over the powerless isn't the wall, but the eraser, and in the end, erased silence looks like consent. An account is resistance on a small scale, a record of what happened set against the official version. Delete it and you don't gain the truth, only silence. And that silence comes at a price, because it costs the next people the only warning they had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn't new when it comes to Google's handling of ICE. Back in 2025, the company blocked access on Android devices to ICEBlock, an app that allowed users to warn one another about sightings of ICE agents. A little later, in October, Attorney General Pam Bondi demanded that Apple remove the same app, saying it put agents in danger. Within hours, Apple gave in, and Google followed with similar apps. Apple told the developer that new information from law enforcement showed the app violated its rules because it provided officers' locations in a way that could be used to harm them. Bondi had already publicly warned the developer that summer, saying they were watching him and that this wasn't protected speech. Joshua Aaron, whose app had more than 1 million users and who had launched it in April for immigrant communities under threat, called it caving to an authoritarian regime. It worked like Waze or Google Maps, where users warn each other about police checkpoints, he said. It only reported ICE activity within a 5-mile radius and didn't expose anyone. If you wanted to know that ICE agents were standing outside an ICE facility, you didn't need an app for that. It was a convenient excuse, he said, to get rid of something that had exposed what ICE was doing to people in this country every single day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An attack served as the pretext. After a gunman opened fire on an ICE facility in Dallas, administration officials, including FBI Director Kash Patel, said the shooter had searched for apps like these. Whether he had actually used one remained unclear. Kica Matos of the National Immigration Law Center called it capitulation by tech companies to Trump and described the apps as a lifeline for people living in constant fear. That fear has reasons, ranging from stops based on skin color to arrests in broad daylight where people are thrown to the ground and entire families are torn apart. Civil rights attorney Alejandra Caraballo warned about the precedent being set. A government that dictates which apps are allowed on a phone behaves like authoritarian states that do the same thing, as China did with protesters in Hong Kong in 2019. The Department of Homeland Security countered that such apps put lives at risk and accused anyone calling Apple's move a capitulation of ignoring that it prevented further bloodshed. There is a line between protecting officers and controlling what citizens are allowed to know about those officers, and the government crosses it with every program it blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sherman Austin has pushed back most persistently. He founded the Stop ICE Raids Alert Network in February. His site, StopICE.Net, doesn't need an app. It runs on reports from users online and through text messages and most recently had more than 500,000 subscribers. Last month, the Department of Homeland Security subpoenaed Meta for data connected to its Instagram account. Austin challenged it, and for now the subpoena has been blocked, with a hearing still to come. The platform sees it as retaliation against people exercising their right to free speech. The government wants to control information and the public image, he says, and that has to be fought with everything the law allows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question that remains is what a review actually is. For a company, it's information for customers. For someone behind bars, sometimes it's the only thing left from their time there. Take it away and you take away the witnesses from the place and the accusers from what happened. McCammon doesn't describe Google's decisions as technical, but political, and says the question is how a company handles search when the reputation of the American administrative state is at stake. A state whose abuses can no longer be looked up appears cleaner than it is, and the search box helps decide what counts as having happened. Anyone protecting that reputation by removing the complaints of those affected from search isn't merely managing a map, they're managing memory. And memory is often the last thing the powerless still own. It can be taken away with the stroke of a pen, and nobody ever has to set foot inside a cell to do it. A map without reviews isn't empty ground. It's been scrubbed clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
